Germany has quite decent shipping rates in Europe.

I may have enough bubble mailers for you. Just let me know how many orders you get. And you could split the shipping from me among all the orders you get.

Also, if you want to cross post this to Deskthority, I don't mind at all.

If there is enough interest, I can open this up to international orders.

However, be aware that the following shipping rates would apply:
1-2: $10.00
3-4: $13.50
5+: $25

The only "tracking" available will be the customs number. Also, except for the $25 option, these would be shipped First Class mail, inside a bubble mailer, with no insurance. If your order never arrives, you can't blame me.

Ah ok. If Acanthophis indeed offers proxy services for Europe I'd be interested in 2 controllers.

Noob question: Can I replace any controller with a Teensy or is this limited to certain boards?

Title: Re: Teensy 2.0 Group Buy (Ordering)
Post by: bpiphany on Thu, 29 August 2013, 09:55:08
Just to chime in on technicalities, I have enough Teensys already...

Getting pins on the side is a good idea. As said earlier they are easy to solder in place, and hell to get out again. Also pins are ultra cheap from ebay in any quantity.

I don't know about US shipping rates, but here a "letter" of less than 20 grams is ~$2 in shipping world wide. Of course the bubble mailer itself adds to that. I use 5 gram  bubble mailers when I ship stuff. They are cheap but not for free. It should be possible to fit at least a couple of Teensys on top of that. The Teensys them selves are quite sturdy, the break away headers may not be.. Handling really is the "expensive" part here. packing everything correctly, writing addresses and so on...

Insurance can probably be handled by the proxy taking a small profit on each controller, and simply refund or replace lost/damaged mail. If he or she feels bad getting a lot of money in the end they can be donated to the forums.

I know 7bit has had some hard time with German customs. European countries differ in how likely it is to need to pay VAT and other taxes. Once in the EU shipping between countries is not a problem

VAT of 19% at customs in Germany is due if the amount exceeds 22€ (includes also shipping, don't ask me why...).

Any chance of adding teensy 3.0?
Title: Re: Teensy 2.0 Group Buy (Ordering)
Post by: jdcarpe on Sat, 31 August 2013, 19:32:14
Any chance of adding teensy 3.0?

Teensy 3.0 uses a different microcontroller, which to my knowledge no one has developed keyboard firmware for. The firmware for the ATmega32U4 is quite well known and adaptable. Also, I was thinking people might want these for use with Phantoms, etc., which only use the Teensy 2.0. Adding the Teensy 3.0 option might split orders, and might prevent us from reaching lower price tiers. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that? The price tier I have in the OP is for 25 units. If we hit 100 units ordered, the price goes down another $1.50 per unit.

The savings on this is already quite good, since a Teensy 2.0 with pins direct from PJRC is $19 plus shipping. By soldering the pins yourself, we are saving $3.50 per unit. Plus, I'm shipping these about $1 cheaper than PJRC for a single unit to the US.

I will open this up to international orders at this time, but please be aware of the shipping cost. If I can ship to a proxy in your region, it would probably save individuals money.

MOAR orders people! :D

I am aware of that, I will however need a few of each. If this GB will only have 2.0, then I am forced to buy the 3.0's from pjrc anyway, and it will be cheaper for me to buy both from them at the same time. That is the reason I asked.

I would like to order *something* from this GB, but would anyone mind pointing me to a compatibility list for Teensy 2.0?  I've looked through the DT and GH wiki pages and could not find that much information on which keyboards it will work with.

The Phantom and the Dox are the obvious ones, but then would larger keyboards like Model M or require Teensy++?  Or still the regular Teensy? What about the SSK?  Any other notable keyboards that need some sort of a Teensy?

Thank you!

Teensy 2.0 is the standard for DIY keyboard projects.

See Soarer's XT/AT/PS2/Terminal to USB Converter with NKRO (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=17458.0) for a popular use for the Teensy 2.0 as a USB converter for older keyboards, especially XT-only models like the 83-key XT Model F.

Teensy 2.0 has 24 usable pins - actually, 25 at a push - enough for most DIY keyboards, many of which are TKL or smaller. It allows for 3 lock LEDs and a 13x8 matrix (104 keys), for example.

Replacing the controller on a Model M would need more pins - the matrix isn't NKRO, so it needs more rows/columns in the matrix to allow the modifiers to always work. I think it's 16x8. Teensy++ would be fine, or even Teensy 2.0 if you drop the lock LEDs, or use diodes to share some pins between scanning and LEDs.

For use as a converter obviously pins aren't an issue at all; Teensy 2.0 has plenty. With my converter it's the extra memory on the Teensy++ that might be useful, for macros/layers etc. BUT, almost everyone who's made my converter has used Teensy 2.0 (or other ATmega32U4-based board), and had plenty of space for what they want to do.

Hey! I want to help this group buy to be successful, so I'll help out here by connecting a few dots...

Want an Ergo Dox? Missed the Massdrop?

PCB : http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=537
Switches: http://deskthority.net/marketplace-f11/cherry-mx-taking-pre-orders-t2760.html
DSA caps: http://keycapsdirect.com/marketplace.php
And this teensy

$38 (PCB) + $55ish (switches) + $15 (teensy) + $41 (caps) = $149

And then you just need a case (and maybe resistors?).

Alright guys, I'm thinking I might get into this and actually buy one, but I have a question...

If I were to handwire a keyboard and use the teensy, is there a way to use LEDs on the switches? I don't know that I want to, but I would like the option. I would obviously not be using a PCB, just a plate.

What's a teensy?

I'm guessing it's an addon microcontroller that you can add to keyboards to change their "brain".

Am I right?

Yes, and I have no problem with that.

FYI to my international buyers, I almost always mark the parcels I send as "gift," and assign a low monetary value to the contents. I really hate that you guys have to pay the ridiculous VAT for things you purchase overseas.

Also, we are at 73 orders now. Only 27 more until the price drops!

I can send them individually, or to a proxy. I guess it just depends on if others from Europe want to save on shipping. Anyone?

Post by: jdcarpe on Wed, 04 September 2013, 16:35:26
If there is enough interest, I can open this up to international orders.

However, be aware that the following shipping rates would apply:
1-2: $10.00
3-4: $13.50
5+: $25

The only "tracking" available will be the customs number. Also, except for the $25 option, these would be shipped First Class mail, inside a bubble mailer, with no insurance. If your order never arrives, you can't blame me.

FYI, bumping this part. International people, if you want upgraded shipping, let me know. Otherwise, you have until tomorrow to leave things as-is, or cancel. :)

I didn't actually say. I will place the order for the Teensys once I have received all payments. Invoicing begins tomorrow, with all payments due no later than September 13. Then once I receive the Teensys, I will start shipping them out. Keep in mind that I work a full time job, and I have a family.

I was just wanting to get one for now. JDcarpe, PM'ed you. Greystoke, thanks for the offer.

Money is a bit tight, so what I think I may do, is just slowly start gathering parts.  This also has had me kind of eyeing the 65% style.  I figure if I do it that way, I'd later be able to build a 10key as well. I've long used full sized keyboards, and the 60%'s drop too many keys I frequently use. The Race looks like a cool keyboard, but I've been hearing too much about Vortex's iffy build quality to make me want to go that route. The minila makes some weird choices that turns me off. Two function keys and a super small spacebar, plus some funny location of keys. I saw the Steelbeauty and Brownfox, and absolutely love the look of things. There are a few tweaks I'd make to that (move ~ to left of the 1, change Print Screen to a function layer, drop the second winkey, and use the two freed up spaces for page up and page down), but that is easily done.

Jdcarpe, replied with info! Thanks for pointing out the Epsilon too! Quite a nice looking keyboard.

One idea I had, was to make the case to where I could attach the eventual 10 key. If I do that, I could have the numpad piggyback off the teensy for the keyboard. Question is, do I want to have it to where the 10key bolts on, or just have a cable in between.

I've talked with Matt3o, and he said he'll send me the steelbeauty dxf. I'm trying to decide if I want to track down a set of DSA Retros in brown (I like brown and older computers, I'm a browncoat, and last name is Brown, may want to keep up the theme) or if I want black with pass through keys, for LEDs. Really, at this point, I'm still tossing around ideas.

That's fine. For some reason, Paypal is hosed now that I got all the invoices sent out. I can't even see the invoices anymore. But I know they are out there and working, because some people are able to pay.

However, if for some reason you can't pay the invoice you received, just do like CalmB4tehPwn did and send me the payment directly. It works the same for me, in the end. As long as I have the funds to pay for the Teensy order, I don't care how they get to me. :)

I am having the same problem. The link I got was broken too. Paypal seems to be having troubles with their generated emails.

So I'll send the amount to you, marked as goods, with the invoice code in the message?

Someone should file a complaint about this. I asked their support something a few weeks ago and never got an answer, not even a standardized reply from a sheet of irrelevant answers. They claim to have fast responses and no more than a  few days.

Edit: Dammit, I was going to save post #1000 for a special announcement and was actually saving it but I forgot about that just now.

too late..

I have 2 Teensy adapters paid but you can take my place in line.  I prefer to sell them both as a set for $31.72 USD.  If you paypal me I'll request JD let you take my spot.

This is a last minute decision as someone is going to be selling me their Kmac so it's going to be ramen for the next few months...

I am including a set of 40 header pins, which you have to solder yourself. It's easy to solder them in, and it saved us $3 per Teensy that way.

Well, the Teensys won't take long to arrive. It's the header pins I will be waiting on to arrive from China. I already ordered them, but I'm not sure how long it will take for them to arrive. I will post updates when I have anything new to share.

Teensys are in! Header pins are in! I will start packaging these up this weekend to start shipping them out early next week.

As is usually the case, domestic orders will ship first, followed by international orders.

Well, you posted in the op that you would collect payments by/on the due date

Quote
*** IF YOU CANNOT PAY BY THE DUE DATE, PLEASE DO NOT ORDER ***

so that is imo 2 day max.
Title: Re: Teensy 2.0 Group Buy (Collecting Payments)

Orders will be taken until September 6, 2013. Invoicing will follow, with ALL PAYMENTS DUE BY SEPTEMBER 13, 2013.

I guess I also should have stated explicitly that I wouldn't be able to place the order for them until I had received all payments. I didn't realize you guys were expecting them within days of orders closing.

Yes, due date being September 13th. Final day to order was September 6th, and due date is the 13th. That's seven days. JD was just saying that by having the orders in on one friday, and payments having to be in by the next friday, it slowed things down. Some people require payment by the date the orders have to be placed. If he had done that, he could have placed the group buy earlier, instead of delaying it by a week.

Dude, be patient. Group buys take time, and this is going lightning fast compared to most. To have orders go, invoice, collect all payments, get the gear, package, and start shipping inside the same calendar month is rare.

As of this moment, every single order has been shipped. Yes, damorgue and Frogamic, yours as well. :)

After the first batch, most of the rest were dropped off at the post office parcel bin late Sunday night. The last two were dropped off just now.

Greystoke, yours didn't get out in the first batch, because I didn't have a Small Flat Rate Box at the time.

Please let me know if you haven't received your order by 22 October. That is normally plenty of time for even slow international shipments to arrive.

I can give you tracking (customs number) if you really need it. BTW, I marked all international shipments as "Gift," and assigned a value of $1.00 per Teensy and $0.10 per header pin set. :)

I can give you tracking (customs number) if you really need it. BTW, I marked all international shipments as "Gift," and assigned a value of $1.00 per Teensy and $0.10 per header pin set. :)
Awesome - thanks for that! Let's hope that UK won't be THAT bad and charge £8 for "handling" the package, just like every time :P

I'd appreciate if you could send me the tracking number, so I can track it and not bugging you.

Arrived, they got here quite fast even though there was a delay because of the issue with the 3.0. Now to figure out the best way to fit this in my assembly and how to place the pins.

No, sorry. I only ordered as many as I had paid orders for.

Maybe I should make a round 2? MOQ of 100, and order once it reaches that mark. Same prices as this round.

definitely on my to-do list ... But I might have to wait a month ... or maybe until after Christmas.

But yes guys, lets plan a round two for Teensies sometime between now and ... err, February.
