I prefer black. Annoys me that some people in the R2 will actually get this later than people who just buy it straight from MK, and for not much cheaper.

RIP Smallfry is a thoughtful touch.

ErgoDox listing updated / active!

Hell of a weekend... sorry for the delay on that one.

While we have yet to put a complete kit together since they've arrived, we're really happy with the way the Phantom and ErgoDox PCBs turned out!  They feel really solid and we checked the box on just about every 'PCB Upgrade' the manufacturer offered.  I'm fairly confident these are the most 'well built' versions of these PCBs currently available.

I really hope this first run goes smoothly as I'm really excited about making these community built boards more available to everyone!

Any feedback you guys have to offer is appreciated :)

so.......i purchased an extra phantom plate during the group buy just in case there was a new phantom revision, but i think this will do. looks like Glod is going to have another phantom :O  ;D

edit: also this is also great for those like me fearing screwing up the PCB during assembly is the end of the world when more PCBs are available :D

Eventually.  It's honestly one step at a time at the moment.  We need to find a plate manufacturer and make sure we have to the correct files / dims for the plate.

Long term goal is to have a complete kit available.

Hmmm, Manufacturer (Beast's favorite plate shop) > Wholesaler (The_Beast) > Distributor (MechanicalKeyboards.com) ??

This is full of WIN!!

Also, I can help with plate designs if you need any weird layouts or anything. :)

Save money! Actually mechanicalkeyboards.com should just buy 20 or so to put us over 100 units and they will only be $14!

the problem with this plate (and i have this plate, i havent built yet) is that you cant just download the hex file and be up and running whereas if MK offered the ANSI150 and ISO150 people could go and download the hex file that has already been created. Creating a hex file isn't exactly a quick thing to do if you have never done it before and if MK offered plates that don't have hex files then it would frustrate people new to building custom keyboards.

Either myself or WFD can get that plate design to The_Beast, but I'm sure he already has it.

Also, I know custom layouts are not really setup for a retail/vendor type situation, but I can help anyone who needs it with programming the firmware, from the keymap layout, to compiling and flashing the .hex file.

The Phantom keyboard project began in early 2012, and was the first of its kind. A TKL keyboard that you build yourself, that included several different layout options on the PCB.

If the Phantom project were to be done today, with what we know now after other projects (such as the GH60), it would most likely include things like:
- Onboard controller IC
- SMT components, presoldered at the fab
- In-switch LED support with backlighting module
- holes drilled in the PCB for mounting stabilizers and switches
- PCB scored to break off 10-key module

But we will use what we have, currently. Until something is designed that meets new design goals.

For some reason, I don't really miss any of those features. I guess that is a good thing.

Post by: Glod on Fri, 06 September 2013, 14:34:54
LED and PCB mounting support would be nice but honestly having SMT pre-soldered stuff would make the project slightly less fun. I really enjoyed building my first phantom, its a fun project; i probably wont keep them all but ill enjoy building them.

Couple stupid questions...

This takes 6.25 space bars correct?  It says it's to be used with 7x.

Also .. lets say you decide to use 2 ctrl, 2 alt keys and nothing else at the bottom.  How would you cover up the unused keys?

One last question - are stabilizers plate dependent?  I had an idea (probably not even original) that a cherry stabilizer would be great on the space bar but use costar everywhere else.  I'm not sure if a plate can only handle multiple stabilizer types.

Thanks :D

It depends on how the plate is designed but most of the custom plates around here should be able to do that I think.

there is also the direct source for the teensy, its the most expensive option for them but i've ordered 2 from them before and they were really quick shipping them out.

We'll try to have the 18 we get in sell for less than PJRC after shipping.  Shipping is really where PJRC gets a little pricey.  The board itself is only $2 - $3 more than the 100+ qty GB.  I think a bubble-wrapped 1st Class Envelope is more than sufficient (I don't say this often) for shipping the Teeensy.  I believe PJRC's cheapest option is Priority Mail.

More just quality control issues ie: scratches, blobs of paint (I think it's paint), exposed traces, scratches etc.

Not sure if these have any bearing on the boards functionality just wondering if some blemishes should be expected or if these are just duds.

Can you post pics?

Your PCB was the only one we've received complaints about to date.  Very odd that you would receive 2 'duds' when no one else has reported any issues.  Don't buy a lottery ticket anytime soon ;)

I know Josh made sure to triple check the second we sent out to you to make sure it was perfect. What kind of issues are you having with it / can you post pics?

Posting pics is up to Moz but I will if he doesn't care.

And I will add the second was packaged and shipped completely different than the first. But these anomalies would have been present before shipping. All I did was open box remove pcb and take pics.

Pics of the anomalies would be great if you or Moz can post them. :D

This is our first time dealing with raw PCBs. The quality seemed superb to everyone here, but we may just not be looking in the right place apparently.

I sent you a PM.

Got the pics! Certainly not a shipping issue.  This will help us do a much better job of catching any problems before shipping them out! Thanks!

New one heading your way!

Thanks!

The PCB manufacturer contacted me today to explain.  She told me that 100% will work, but up to 5% may have aesthetic flaws.  This was apparently by accident, and she will be replacing our boards with scratches / paint blobs.  I'm guessing they assume most buyers are installing these into complete products and that end consumers won't really see the PCB so the aesthetic flaws don't matter.

Obviously, we'll be removing all of the PCBs with aesthetic issues from our inventory, so no one should have to worry about this again.

Thanks for everyone's patience as we tackle these new product types!

You do a good job, shaker. Not something I can say about some of the newer players in the mechanical game. Just don't forget about us down the road. Keep being awesome. :D

That is good to know. Some people (eg me), just have the best of luck and attract most of the 5% :P

Got my Phantom boards yesterday, they both had some scratches, but it's not a big deal.  I really like the white.

I think we will probably do this :)

I'm really going to get on top of them next time (wish* I could justify a plane ticket to China for some in-person spot checks lol).  Our whole team is aware of this now, so should be better going forward.

Do it and take lots of video and pictures of the manufacturing processes!!

hi everyone, just wondering what kind of resistors I would need for the phantom? and what kind of LEDs I would need to get for it? If anyone can lead me to where I can order these it would be great! thanks =)

for the LEDs i believe any 3mm through hole LEDs should work. as for the resistors it will depend on the LEDs you use and how bright/dim you want them. you might have to do some research to find out exactly what you want.

but someone please correct me if im wrong.

negative. you want flat top t1 3mms I believe and even then because of mabufacturer cariance in what they call such, you need to confirm fitment yourself

3mm got it thanks guys! =) just truly in search of some form of plate and need to figure out what case I'll be putting it into

Keep in mind that flat top T1 is preferable, as the domed-top ones can interfere slightly with some keycaps.

Also: WTB scratched PCB :p I have another phantom plate lying around that needs a PCB to go with it.

Even with flat top LEDs, you want to sand a downward angle on the front of the LED as the thicker cherry keycaps will get stuck when pressed firmly.

Just buy 2x3x4 rectangle LEDs and you won't have to worry about keycap clearance.

They also seem to 'click' into the switch and hold themselves in place pretty well. Very convenient.

Just received my PCBs. They both look all right apart from some minor scratches, but from what I've read, it should not have an impact on the board itself (hopefully).

Can you use a stock Filco TKL plate for the phantom?

i don't believe so, but i'd love to be wrong. i think right now the only way to get a plate is to wait for one to crop up, harvest one from another phantom, or wait for the Groupbuy thats gonna happen novemberish.

Hmm... do you know if the stock plate is modifiable in some way in order to make it work?? like what specifically is wrong with the stock one that makes it not work out

It's true that you can, but IMHO that beats the whole purpose - you won't be able to mod or repair your switches after soldering them (i.e., remove the top housing and change the stem / spring). I believe that's why too many people want to get one of these plates which allow you to do that.

Hmm well I guess I'll just make sure I put it in the proper switch/spring combo for my needs prior to soldering it with the stock plate... I can always build a second one once the plate GB comes around ^_^

I think you did good picking white MK  :thumb: the only problem with white is you have to do some serious cleaning after soldering if you want to show it off. get out the alcohol, a toothpick, and q-tip and go at it.

Pretty! I kept thinking there has to be a reason no one does white for PCBs... I guess you answered that.  Looks great if you take the time though!

We were looking for suppliers on this.  One was actually from GH but we never heard back on pricing.  We need to find a direct supplier. If anyone has suggestions, we'll put an order together.
