Title: CODE Keyboard and Cherry Clears
Post by: daerid on Thu, 05 September 2013, 17:20:18
Looks like the first run was it. I guess Cherry is having a hard time keeping up with demand for Clears these days

this is because the Ergodox dried up the Clears.  Cuz it's so much more beast... than the code.(http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/th_100_.gif)

I will not disagree with this.

Dammit! I take it this means that clears won't be available for the standard V2 either.

Post by: dante on Thu, 05 September 2013, 18:15:52
It probably spells doom for the V2 variant as well.

It doesn't look like Deck's new keyboards are going to have Clears either.

Maybe ShakeR was right; these might be end of life.

I saw mouser looked like they had them the other day in stock still. Was kinda thinking may want to get a group buy, and buy everything they have then, if supply is drying up.

@codinghorror Check ebay man, lots of gently used clears available

This would be a serious business mistake on Cherry's part. From what I can tell, demand for clears is increasing, not decreasing.

TBH i like clears but i wouldn't mind buying a full size code with blues or reds

ROFL

(5 minutes later)....

LOL

Seriously though, I doubt cherry will drop a line of popular switches. Have they ever done so in the history of MX switches?

Its either EOL or someone with more $ than Wasd is buying them up for a line of boards.

I know for me, that was my primary interest in the CODE.

Maybe they're gonna switch MX clears to MX ergoclear

I don't understand. Doesn't Cherry want business? Unless making Clears are extremely hard else why won't they make more?
Title: Re: CODE Keyboard and Cherry Clears
Post by: Hellmark on Fri, 06 September 2013, 09:56:35
It may just not be very cost effective for them.

If you have companies buying millions of the other switches, and then you have smaller operations buying thousands of the clears, well, is it worthwhile to keep producing the clears? You have to think about the overhead and production costs that can be spread out over a large production run. It could also be that they is an issue effecting the production of the clears. If they had molds break, or some equipment wear out, and they're having trouble replacing it, then they'll not be able to produce like they were before.

Keyboard OEM's just need to do a Group Buy :D

No reason for me to buy a v2 then. :(

If true, will have to hope for a CODE with clears through the classifieds. Very disappointing from Cherry, and really want more explanations.

The one that's affected is Code themselves, in my opinion. If they don't have Clears and end up using Brown and Blues, then there is no competitive difference between them and other brands! Not sustainable but I think he's probably doing it as a hobby instead of real business.

There was never a point to getting the Clear in the first place for "MOST" people because the stock spring is very very hard for most people's relaxed wrist technique..

Without the inclusion of the Easy mod plate, the 'code is too limiting.

Only people with quick strike techniques will be able to handle stock clears.

Well, from what I can tell, the Clear is actually on par force-wise with most typical rubber dome boards, maybe a hair stiffer.

And from everything I've read, clears have a 55g springs, and buckling springs from a model m are about 75g. How many people here are totally cool with a M? Hell, people are lovin' the greens, and those are 80g.

Technically yes, but they're kind of a unique spring in the MX world. They ramp up at the end of the stroke more rapidly than the rest of the MX springs.

That twitter conversation did continue, and someone noted that there are still some at one distributor:

If there really is good demand my guess is Cherry will continue to produce them. Remember the Reds that Cherry actually said were no longer in production back in 2010? Obviously they saw the money and then reversed that decision.

Post by: MJ45 on Sat, 07 September 2013, 09:58:03
I am sure Cherry will respond to the demand of clears just like with reds when they were not a common switch and the demand increased. They will most likely ramp up clear production.

Cherry at one point did say they would be willing to make ergo clears but they would need an order of at least 750,000.

I don't understand... Clears wont be getting reproduced? When there is demand?

I was thinking of emailing WASD and seeing what the deal is... but maybe one of you already have.

WASD posted this comment on their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/wasdkeyboards) yesterday:

We will have a limited supply of Clear V2's coming in about 2 weeks. There's no ETA for more Clear CODE keyboards at the moment.

Kinda sucks. For the same price, I'd much rather have a CODE than a V2. Same thing sans backlighting, so may as well get the backlighting.

Yeah they have a poll at the bottom of the Code Keyboard website now for the next switch to use.  Seems like MX Brown is winning follow by MX Blue.

I guess I don't mind having a MX Brown Code.  Though did anyone find out what stabilizer does the Code use yet?

modified costar, WASD said I do believe.

Unsurprisingly, the Blacks and Reds are way far behind. If it had those, it'd really be up against every other keyboard.

Too bad Green's weren't an option.

But the Code differentiation is the Clears isn't it? If they go with Blues how are the different from other board aside from backlighting?

there are a few other things that set the CODE keyboard as different from other keyboards (regardless of how insignificant or superficial you might think they are), you should probably check out the product page to see what those things are.

Mmmmmm I hope it feels as good as regular Costar stabilizer.  Then I might buy this as my first backlit keyboard.  :D

I think Cherry stabilizer is holding me back from getting backlit keyboards.
