Title: Fanspiracy - Shopping for 120mm fan (again)
Post by: tp4tissue on Fri, 06 September 2013, 11:57:38
Posit:  Corsair paid off Xbit Labs...

Surprised to see the SP120 being "THIS" dominant, if this is the case, why would anyone buy anything else..

According to Xbit Labs, both the Quiet edition and the Performance edition clearly outperform all other competitors.

Does anyone work with fluid dynamics? I think the "long" tube they're using might be skewing the results here "some-how"

They're $23.99 for a 2-pack on sale ?

That's among the cheapest 120mms

The Noctua NF12 is ffffing $23 each

But based on these reviews... the SP120 epic rape everybody else. (http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/th_001_-v2.gif)

WHY NOT JUST GET A 10,000 MM FAN?

Yea dude.. it's ridiculous if this is "legit"... Although.... I'm thinking the big tube they used has something to do with the results being skewed in the Corsair's favor.

Solution? Build a case out of long tubes.

wa...  wah.....  why i no think of that... OMFG...

Using the straw wave guide to get Laminar airflow...  I think laminar airflow might be the key here. hmmmmmmmm

I always recommend 120mm Yate Loons from Amazon. They're about $6 each and work well on radiators.

I actually have an almost brand new yate loon I never used.

I'll test both when my sp120s get here and let you know.

We'll have to make due with an iphone decibel app though.. (http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/th_057_.gif)

Anyone own both version of Gentle Typhoons?

The Black 3000+ rpm ones vs the Grey 1850rpm ones

And can compare them?

And can compare them?

Both versions?  There are more than two different Scythe GTs (which are just rebranded Nidec Servos), there's a whole range of them ranging from scythe AP-11 (which are hard to find) to AP-31s.

I do find the Corsair reviews hard to buy, especially since I've seen some of those fans in action.  They're not bad fans, but they're loud for their performance.  If I was to grab a bunch of 120mm mount fans, I'd grab some of the Thermalright TY fans.  If I wanted good and quiet fans with good static pressure, I'd get Noctuas or Be Quiet Silent Wings 2.

And I wouldn't be surprised if Corsair bought of reviewers.  I know they've basically bought off Tiny Tom Logan and I wouldn't be surprised if they have bought off others.  It's not that they produce bad components as they have many good computer parts, they're just usually obscenely overpriced for their level of performance.

I liked Scythe in the past because they offered a clearly defined range of fans with different speed/airflow properties.

Well, Loud is subjective, that's why we submit to these tests.. I am not defending Corsair, it's just that I've long since discovered that I could not trust my ears when it comes to this sort of thing.

Same goes for Cherry mx noise (http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion_custom/th_aji.gif)

But yea,, i also think corsair must've cheated.(http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/015.gif)

Loud is subjective...ish.  You can get an objective measurement of sound pressure level, but very few people do any kind of spectrum analysis.  Sounds in certain frequencies can seem louder or more annoying to some people than other frequencies.  Since very few sites give you that analysis, it's hard to really tell if a fan will drive you insane.

Now don't get me wrong, the SP120 High Performance Edition isn't a bad fan, but I'm pretty sure those numbers are off on dBA in that chart.  From what I've seen, the Corsair fans are loud for the amount of air they move and pressure they develop.

i'm looking at this, and they're using a square box.

Now the hot wire anemometer is very sensitive to turbulence, because if the air was blowing at all wayward instead of a uniform flow, you wouldn't get a good comparison between the fans, because each fan may cause different deflection inside the chamber.

I don't believe they're using it properly... and it doesn't mention any wave guides in the box.

I prefer the methodology in the xbit labs article.. though I suspect it is rigged because of the longer chamber used. thus the fan with the higher pressure will always win despite in real world applications where the pressure doesn't do much when there isn't so much resistance.

are they estimating cfm then? I can't understand too well what chamber they're using.

Nice fans. i'm in the market for some new ones. But love my lil Rosewills ...lol.

I see that they have rubber on them. I love anything with rubber!

That 2 pack seems like a  good deal.

I'd be interested to hear thoughts/experiences with the AF120 too. I gather that one is for non obstructed use, but I do need some case exhaust fans.

The AF120 is a pretty bad fan except for exhaust fans without restrictive grills.  Of course, in that use, there are better and cheaper fans out there.
