Title: Wacky "wind-powered" keyboard with POM Jelly rainbow keycaps
Post by: norbauer on Sun, 08 September 2013, 19:33:58
So my husband is a developer at a big corporation and, ever keen to be the class clown, he wanted a really idiosyncratic keyboard to attract attention and amuse people at work. Here is what I came up with for him:

It turns out he actually really loves this keyboard (which certainly has raised some eyebrows among his colleagues), and he actually strongly prefers the feel of it to the black-body red-switch Filco with black blank PBT (non-thick) key caps I set up for him at home.

He says (and I agree) that the sound and feel of the POM (especially the noticeable texture) on the surface of the caps is both different and preferable, in a way that is hard to describe. The sound of the keys is definitely deeper and more resonant (more of a "thock" or "clack") than the thin PBT (more of a click), and for some reason the switches on the HPE feel smoother as they actuate.

I also really love that there is Chinese writing on the face of the board. Taobao listings for the HPE list it (amusingly) as a "wind-powered" keyboard (courtesy of Chrome's Google translation), but a Taiwanese friend helped me translate the characters a bit more accurately. He said it might best be translated as "'The source of the inner power of wind' but in a more poetic way, not an engineering way. It doesn't mean the power for the keyboard is wind power, of course, just saying the source of the power moves as fast as wind, using poetic language." I'm not sure that's actually more clear, come to think of it, but take it for what it's worth. :)

Anyway, I just thought I would share our experience with this board/cap combo, and of course also some pics:

TL;DR: jellypix!!

Here is my best attempt at showing the texture on the surface of the keys:

Since he likes these keys so much, I've ordered an all-white set of jellies for his home keyboard on Taobao (I thought the rainbow would be a bit clashy on a black board). I'll post pics of that combo here once they arrive too.

I came here expecting a board actually running off wind-power.
Disappointed, although rainbow jelly does soften the blow a little.

That would have been way better, or maybe a little hamster running on a wheel next to my keyboard. Google translate can get overly fanciful sometimes.

Agreed! Or perhaps a little baby duckie running on a wheel to power a Ducky would be more appropriate. ;)

Monsieur Canard: that is entirely fair. I hereby rescind my prior statement.

You found a source for 100% single color jelly POM?!?!?  HELP ME ACHIEVE THIS!!!

There are a number of sources on Taobao claiming to sell them.
http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=10750871018

In the above listing, if you use Google translate you'll note that there is a "full white" set option (the last one)

I ordered mine via an agent a few days ago and it hasn't shipped yet, though, so an appropriate degree of skepticism is warranted. (On my doorstep or it didn't happen.)

Do you know how these compare to thick pbt keys in terms of sound? I'm looking for a deeper clack sound like you mentioned.

The difference is quite subtle, but I would say that it goes as follows in terms of pitch (from high to deep): thin ABS, thin PBT, double-shot ABS (based on what I'm told), POM jelly, thick PBT. I'm generalizing a bit, but this probably isn't far off the mark for most manufacturers' caps, going just by material.

Naughty these are hard as rocks, but it's not too hard to make it more rubbery. :-)

Also, thanks to the forthcoming LCARS set, I now have a set of white jellies for sale (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=49235.msg1062348#msg1062348), if anyone is interested.  ;D

LCARS is top of my list too .....

And are those jelly POM caps thin or thick?
