Title: [IC] Plate Buy
Post by: The_Beast on Mon, 09 September 2013, 15:39:14
This is mostly stemming from this thread but I'd like to have a questionnaire filled out before I move ahead with any plans
Plate and PCB interest check (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=47171.0)

Details if I proceed:
Payment window closing around November 14th if stainless is chosen and earlier if anodized
Packing around Nov. 29th
Shipping in the week or two afterwards
This is not a group buy
Anodized plates will cost more than Stainless Steel
I don't plan on offering that many colors if people want anodized
I have not had anything anodized from this place before
  - I may run some plates prior to the buy, but I'm not 100% sure

Plate Questionnaire (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1-eAefL_1J-u-YSbOTuvcujpTzWtFIwWNNDNlGxFLhss/viewform)

Fill out the questionnaire and let me know what you think in the comments below

Mid $30s, low $40s without shipping for stainless. Anodized, I just don't really know

I'm still willing to pay for the first rack of anodizing, if we go that route. Assuming it is indeed 30 bucks a rack, and you want to do a test run before the actual GB. But I'm seriously, and entirely, sold on the HHKB model that JDCarpe mocked up.

Any chance for at 7bit layout? I know it's not popular but it one of the main reasons I got a phantom but I haven't been able to source a plate yet.

What's the difference between a universal TKL and one specific to the Phantom? Also, is there any links/images showing the differences between the layouts, such as the difference between the Ansi 125 and the Ansi 150?

These are univeral plates (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=36907.0) and these are phantom plates (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=39410.0).

Basically the universal plate leaves room above the arrow cluster for the controller pcb on filco and QFR boards. While the phantom plate allows you to populate that area on a phantom with additional keys.

So the universal plate should work on a phantom but a phantom plate won't work on off the shelf tkl boards.

No, the screw holes are not the issue. The Filco controller daughterboard needs a cutout in the plate in order to fit into the PCB. The Phantom plates don't have this cutout, because the controller for the Phantom (Teensy 2.0) is soldered to the back of the PCB. This allows the Phantom PCB to allow for 5 more switches in that area, instead of a controller.

Here are some illustrations why:

But thats the thing, we already have black and grey and silver plates available. Colots are "unsafe" but I know I'm not alone in wanting an unsafe color.

Give me cyan, or fuschia or lavender

I didnt say easily available, but I already have a black uTKL and a raw SS phantom plate on the way. Clearly they're available if you're looking.

What I have not been able to find any off, is color. Any color, except hints of red.

I agree that black is a safe color. It can be match with most of the color.  But in my opinion, gold match white caps very good.

As long as its an ANSI150 plate for the phantom pcb... I think I won't be too picky with the colour, so black seems fine to me too ^^

Sure, they're available.. But to what degree? How many people have them & want to sell them? How many people want them?

I reckon the number of people who want them minus the number of people who have them & want to sell them is higher than the number of people who want a colour that isn't black.

same, I really want a gold one, but I can accept all color as long as it is ANSI 150

how is the color compare to stock Filco plate?

The amount of people that jumped when I mentioned being interested in tracking down someone who can Annodize in Cyan, I feel is indicative of a neglected demographic. If The_Beast wants to keep this GB simple, and just do Black, or no color at all, then I might have to push forward with my own GB and track down someone who can do Cyan for us, and a few non-standard, interesting colors like it.

It's not THAT easy to find a plate... I've been trying to find an ANSI 125 plate for my phantom but I'm having trouble finding one! It's either the people who sell them bundles them with a keyboard and switches (making the purchase very expensive), or they're selling other plate variations (e.g. ISO, WFD, etc.).

Hi The_Beast,

Would there be any possibility of adding one or more custom plates? Metal and finish are not important to me and I'd happily take a mix from different leftover space. (I'm looking at doing a large terminal-plus board and could easily split the different sections.)

If so, is there a particular preferred key template to use, or criteria for inside corner kerf and whatnot?

I'd much rather do stainless since I like it a lot and it's easier for me, but the people of GH seem to want anodized aluminum.

In terms of plates, I'm thinking of running an ANSI150 Phantom Plate and a uTKL which should work as a phantom plate with the exception of doing the numberpad on the right side because the controller goes there.

Colors, it looks like black is the clear winner with purple, gray and red as strong seconds.

I want a bare stainless one. Leaning towards phantom ansi125.

Phantoms you can get PCB's no problem, but the plates are the trickier part.

Edit: raw stainless, so I can polish it, and make it shiny and pretty.

hmm well my main goal here is to get hold of a plate for the phantom, preferrably the ansi150 layout, whether its a stainless steel or anodized aluminum.. I'd be happy with it.
I guess if you already know the quality of the stainless steel from the place you are getting these from with a $30-40 price range I'm down for one ^^

This isn't meant to slight you, personally, because several newer members have expressed the same sentiment, but...

FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS NOW IT HAS BEEN ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO OBTAIN A PHANTOM PCB IF YOU MISSED THE GROUP BUYS. ONLY IN THE LAST FEW DAYS HAS IT BEEN EVEN POSSIBLE TO ORDER A PHANTOM PCB FROM A STOREFRONT. SO THE CAVALIER ATTITUDE ABOUT HOW EASY IT IS TO OBTAIN A PHANTOM PCB MAY BE A BIT IRRITATING TO THOSE OF US WHO HAD TO WAIT MONTHS OR EVEN YEARS TO GET OURS.

Thank you, I've waited for about 2 months, and even the ErgoDox PCB. We can't be thankful enough to MK for selling these on-demand. I know I hunted and asked many of those who placed orders in the ErgoDox R2, if they could order extra PCBs, and even mailed Massdrop repeatedly. Thankfully they agreed and had the PCB only GB.

So be thankful that the Phantom PCB is now available.

However my hunt has begun again with the search for yet another PCB. I am now looking for the GH60 PCB.

uTKL is ANSI 125.

Doing Phantom150 and uTKL is fine for me, since that still gives a ANSI125 option.

Although thinking about it, my primary want for stainless steel, is for a stripped down keyboard, where the plate doubles as a face, but with both uTKL and Phantom, that isn't an option as their are holes around the arrows. That said, it really doesn't matter too much which material it is, although I still give stainless steel the edge because if it is cheaper.
Title: Re: [IC] Plate Buy
Post by: argyakrivos on Thu, 12 September 2013, 18:02:19
All right, since uTKL is ANSI125 then I'm fine with that. I actually prefer stainless steel as well - better material and lower price.

If there's gonna be a uTKL plate with stainless steel, and the price is decent enough, then I will definitely get at least two plates.

I don't think you can have a 8x or a 10x since it would more than likely hit a switch cutout. If it does hit a cutout, that stabilizer would need to be PCB, which the phantom doesn't support.

However, I could be wrong *waits for Jd*

edit: sandblasted and anodized plates would look pretty amazing.

Sandblasted would have to be on the stainless steel, because blasting aluminum can be tricky. You can easily wear away too much, and if the wrong blasting media is used, you can easily damage the piece.

Yes, the stabilizer holes for 8/9/10x spacebars will fit in the ANS150 plate. 8x spacebar won't work, even though 1.5-1-1-8-1-1-1.5 would fit on the plate, the holes on the PCB don't line up for the inside 1x switches next to the spacebar.

FYI, Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday in November in the US. :)

Lol thanks guys. So I'll have a month or so to gather up $ anyways.  ;D

I don't know if it's the best place to ask, but is there still plans for a 60% plate (poker for me) but with the bent sides to make some kind of case at the same time?

It's being bent by another forum member. He has a test plate, I'm just waiting for it to be bent.

Nice to hear. So I suppose that if all works well it will end up as a different GB than this one?

Not sure yet since I don't know when I'll be getting the test plate back.

I would really be up for this.  Been wanting a Filco-compatible TKL plate that allows for relatively painless switch mods (after the initial pain of installing, of course).
A nice color would be icing on the cake.

So looking forward to another plate group buy. I bought the phantom r1 pcb, and then got side tracked with life. By the time I got back to the forums, all of the cases and plate buys had ended. Currently playing catchup to get back in the game.

Not sure how these plate buys work, but would it be possible to have a custom design tacked on to the order? Local laser cutting has proved prohibitively expensive for me.

Along the same lines as the poster above; how expensive would it be for your local fab shop to cut a layers ErgoDox case out of stainless steel?  Would it be around $20-25 per layer, or...?

As to a Litster style steel Ergodox case, I've sorta derailed CZarek's 'proper case' thread pointing out that now that I've see usable files I'm going to research exactly this question. I'll update that thread with some vague price tiers if I hear anything promising.

No worries. I appreciate that you pointed it out as a potential option.

I'm interested in buying a black ISO125 plate, possibly 2 of them.   Also pretty interested in getting a Phantom PCB if possible.  :)
