I'm actually a bit excited to see ios7, but not excited enough to watch the stream, but if 7 turns out ok I might actually get an iPhone next, as I do think the phones themselves look and feel nice, but ios has always been a turnoff for me.

The jump from a 3GS to a 5S would be pretty substantial

The iPhone 5S (if such exists) is likely to be little different, the 5C is supposed to be the cheaper version.

Most people would have seen iOS 7 somewhere - using it yourself will give a different impression to watching someone else use it.

I am wondering whether there will be any new Macs.

I've been an iPhone user since the 4 and my 5 has aged like ****. The home and lock buttons are either broken or half broken, iOS6 is horrible and so I've had to jailbreak it just so it's on par with android phones....

That said I'm too invested now to be able to afford to change platform...

But yeah interested to see if they have fixed messaging in iOS (because it sucks, bring fb chat heads please!) and generally made it eaiser to use generally, otherwise I might just stick it out with my broken iPhone 5....

I am invested as well into the platform and I didn't regret it. Don't think I want to try Android and re-purchase all the apps that was in iOS - also not sure if Android has all the iOS app I am using.

Having said that, I won't upgrade my current 4S unless they have a bigger screen iPhone! It's about time, come on Tim Cook!!

also not sure if Android has all the iOS app I am using.

A year ago I might have been worried about this but as it stands today you'd be hard pressed not to find most the major apps on both platforms or at least a better alternative. When I made the switch I was worried but I'm 100% converted now, Android is just a much more advanced application eco-system overall.

I find it amusing that people are getting excited over features that us Android users have been using for years now. iOS7 is now getting a quick settings panel, WOW. Mind=blown.

Apple is such a joke of a company. They've been smoked by Samsung and will probably never be able to catch up again, because they were lazy and spent way too much time resting on their laurels and trying to sue other companies. Now there's going to be an iPhone 5C for the Chinese.. and at $400, most of them still won't be able to afford it. It's kind of like saying, "This is the iPhone for you poor people out there", and honestly, who would want that? Because most people who buy iPhone's buy it as a status symbol, not because it's a good phone. Not saying that it's a bad phone, but there are so many other better phones out there. For like 1/3 the price.

Most phones go for $500-$700 off contract, even Android phones.
The only exception is the Nexus 4, which is $200-300 off contract.

Your argument is bad.
Title: Re: Iphone Event Tomorrow!
Post by: ynrozturk on Tue, 10 September 2013, 11:37:58
Most of what I said wasn't an argument, it was a fact.

1. Android users have had that technology for years.
2. Apple has spent way too much time and money in lawsuits than in R&D.
3. Most Chinese people still won't be able to afford a $400 phone.
4. The Nexus 4 was $300 at launch, and it's even cheaper now. And it has a better CPU and better screen.

Those aren't arguments. Those are facts.

i r bad driver, in that i only drive with gps, one day driving with about to leave i couldn't get a gps signal, and had a 2 hour trip home, so i pulled out her iphone 4s (work phone). I'm like wtf... i can't see the screen! i'm so used to driving with my galaxy s3 vs. her iphone4s (she was playing a game on her iphone5, wouldn't hand it over).

at this point in life after using the galaxy3 for a year, i'm ready for the 5in screen, i don't know how ppl deal with the puny screens. Heck i have an old ipod touch and an old iphone 4 around the house (as music players, general clocks, etc) and i'm amazed when i pick them up and go, whoa so tiny!

Was anyone really expecting anything different from this "S" release than any previous "S" release? The "S" is their stepping stone phone and always has been. I'm going to buy the 64GB version and I'm actually pretty excited about the 64-bit processor and finger print sensor, slightly better battery and improved camera. If you were expecting anything different then you obviously don't know Apple.

The "64-bit processor" has a new instruction set for "64-bit code". The new instructions are supposedly running faster than old code on the same CPU. That's basically it.

Other than that, I was pretty underwhelmed by the product announcements.

We had a spare silicone iphone case laying around at the office at work a couple of years ago. Dust stuck to it easily, it was disgusting.

Not really sure what people expect, Apple is doing nothing new in making a faster better iPhone 5.... and hell if you want a cheap iPhone you now can get one that isn't 2 generations old.

The main advantage of a 64-bit processor is the ability to address more than 4GB of memory. In order to be able to do that pointers are twice as big. Which actually uses more memory (not twice as much a lot of memory usage is not pointers).

Basically it's of little use on an iPhone right now. Improved power consumption would have a been a better idea.

Unfortunately I live in a country where my only options for a local mech keyboard is Razer and Logitech. That's it. So I picked a TKL model, which is better than nothing. Importing a Filco or whatever would cost me around $400. Don't be so quick to judge. I am not as spoiled with options as a lot of people here are.

Nope, it's all which is available to us unfortunately. A few months after I picked this up the Zowie board was available with Browns - I would have picked that up instead had I known it was going to be an option.

If I told you how much I'll be paying for a HHKB2 your heart would skip a beat I'm sure.

It's possible the chip has other improvements that might help with power and performance but they'd be unrelated to the 64-bit feature.

The iPhone 5S is reported as having 1GB of RAM. Even giving 1GB for the OS that's still only 50% usage of the addressable space. And of course unlike a PC you can't upgrade it.

Either they have other plans for this chip that requires the address space or they just figured do it now rather than in 24 months when they start shipping phones that need it.

As for the Apple thing, I'm not angry at all. I just find it amusing that people go crazy over a phone and lines like "IT'S THE MOST INNOVATIVE DEVICE EVER" are just downright hilarious.

I'm sick and tired of Apple insulting our intelligence.

I'm sick and tired of hearing the same anti/pro mac rhetoric as I've heard for the last decade plus. Clearly it isn't for you... why keep posting about it?

I'll no doubt be using iOS 7 on my iPad but will stick with the Nexus 4 for calls right now.

I disagree on a pure hatred level, apple fanbois are the worst in the world, this is coming from my background as a computer salesman (before apple stores came about 5 years ago). I mean it was 100% easy too to sift out a mac vs pc person. We sold pc's in the front of the store and macs in the back, but everyone came through the same door, we were all 100% correct when we said, you want a mac? go back there. (most of us pc sales weren't allowed and didn't ever want to deal with mac ppl, if i wanted to... i could sell a mac) damn mac fanboi's are the worst, at least back then in the early 2000's, if they looked weird or looked like a hippie or had more than 3 piercings, they loved macs. Everyone of them were stupid too, "i need a mac", i'd say "why?", they'd say "i need a mac". They didn't know! they were too dumb to know. why was a G4 better for video editing? maybe because for the extra $1000 price premium it was using scsi drives instead... NOPE, "it looks pretty"

I mean really, you could be a salesman/woman from Sephora (the makeup company) and you could sell a mac. It's sad too b/c you'd make 3x more selling a mac vs. a pc or laptop cuz you'd be selling a comparable 3k pc to a 6k mac, and the mac ppl would ALWAYS buy the extended warranty, they were mega dumb! "you have to protect your mac" But i couldn't deal with mac fanboi's, not at 21, i would have had to put on my stupid hat for too long just to talk to them.

I still don't see how it matters, yeah it's annoying to discuss with fanboys, but that's why you act smart and don't start the discussion in the first place for the same reasons that you don't start discussions on religion or politics with strangers.
If they're not paying enough attention to even know what their specs are then you can simply ignore them.

thats a false equivalency, for one, and your earlier posts state that you don't just correct them, but that they are somehow worthy of scorn for being wrong. i don't think theres anything wrong with the former, but the latter is more problematic.

you don't like apple so why so butt hurt? you're not in their demographic, that's a given. if people want to fall for this snake oil then that's their problem. money isn't coming from your pocket so why this crusade against apple?

are you an android shill? M$ Shill? w/e other OS shill? it's fine to give your opinion but damn dude, not that serious.

On this forum, yes, since it's about keyboards. If someone I barely know comes up to me and goes on about how fantastic his new razer dome board is then I just pretend to agree with him. Unless it's someone I know well I rarely bother correcting them on technicalities since I don't see what good it does to basically go "no, you're wrong."

This guy would develop Apple apps and test them on his iPad - so yes, I think that him knowing the correct resolution and pixel density of his device as important and relevant.

also, finger print scanners lolol

remember apple works for NSA. they now have a finger print/name database without even trying.

Pretty clever way to collect information. I just find that to be wrong on a moral level. Who knows that they will do with that data. I don't even want to think about the possibilities.

i take it you haven't been following the NSA scandal? they already do collect all of our data. this is just another piece for their collection. and people will eat it up. and complain, but still go out and buy this phone.

I've read about it a bit, but I haven't been following it too closely. Last I heard Microsoft and Google were going to take the NSA to court.

Oi baldguy, I was quoting you this morning. Get a galaxy, I can't look at iPhone screens anymore they're too small.

But I don't want a galaxy... I like the fact the iPhone isn't a mini tablet and that I can use it with one hand without a problem....

And it's a shame that this thread turned into people crying about Apple products and not really about talking about there new products...

Underwhelming announcement for sure but honestly I didn't expect any different. Will be interesting to see how sales go considering how dominant Android is these days, every year up until this one I've heard tons of people going on and on about the new iPhone releases. This year no-one seems to give a ****.

Which Android partner do you have shares off?

I was kinda hoping there would be a "one more thing" announcement of new Macs, particularly the Mac mini.  Maybe in a few weeks they will sneak one in.

I've always wanted to pick up a Mac Mini - that would be one announcement I'd definitely be interested in.

Just the sentiment, not sure why you appear to want Apple to fail so much, unless you have stock in a company that makes Android phones. If Apple do better and gain more market share Android will only become better, if Apple does worse Android makers can relax and the OS updates and improvements slow down...

Why unless your financially investing in one of the companies would you want less competition? It makes no sense.

On a side note why people champion the Galaxy s4 is beyond me, it's a hideous, nasty plastic phone with poor aftermarket apps crammed into it. I'd much rather have the HTC One....

What did you not like about the Mac mini?

features / cost rate is too low.
i got this device (with mountain lion) at work to check out apple computers, which i haven't been using since apparently 1997, and got disappointed with both apple's software and hardware. don't get me wrong, it works fine, but for these money you can buy or build a pc with much better specs. and mac os works well, but it'is nothing special, and it has its own quirks (why can't i remap command-tab? and why must mdworker slow down my computer so much?).

Given that this has now devolved into a talk about why Apples products arnt good, I think calling some of there devices out on price and specs to be the laziest meaningless thing to compain about.

I don't own a Mac, never have, I don't need one for how I use a computer and probablly never will. But the Mac Mini is such a nicely made and designed little box tht you cannot get really anything much like it in the PC space without custom building something, then calling it over priced (for what it is) is so redundant.
On top of that, you got it for free (apparentally) making the cost irrelevant anyway....

What where you expecting? Nothing about OSX should really come as a surprise given how well it's marketed. From my own experiences with using friends it seems perfectly capable as a general purpose OS aswel as catering to it's niche markets like design and audio

Wait a second,

iPhone 5c USA
$99  (=£62)

iPhone 5c UK
£469 (=$737)

Last time I checked $99 =/= $737

What am I missing ?
The price is with a carrier plan.

It is easier for me to repost from another forum than look it up myself ...
Quote
Unlocked prices for 5s: $649/$749/$849 (16/32/64GB); 5c: $549/$649 (16/32GB)

I'm just angry there's no big screen iPhone.
Then they would have to make another screen size.

That would confuse Apple developers immensely, because scalable interfaces is an unknown concept to them.

I was kinda hoping there would be a "one more thing" announcement of new Macs, particularly the Mac mini.  Maybe in a few weeks they will sneak one in.
I know. The "one more thing..." thing is a tradition at Apple product events. Why this sudden break with tradition, Tim Cook!? ;)

I don't own a Mac, never have, I don't need one for how I use a computer and probablly never will.
I had one of the last PPC Mac Mini's, for a few weeks many years ago. I had been a NextStep fan and had bought into the MacOS X being a modern useful improved NextStep. How wrong I was.
I absolutely hated it. For a reason I don't know why, the mouse tracking was weird, and the text in the interface was not rendered with hinting so it was really blurry (not a very high-res screen, but anyway).

These days, I am thinking about maybe getting a PPC Mac Mini again ... to install a reborn-again version of the AmigaOS just for kicks. But actually, mostly to get an opportunity to build an Amiga case-mod...  :p

I never said I wanted them to fail at all, I just made an observation based on how many of my friends have made the switch from iPhone to Android. Apple need to make some serious changes otherwise they are setting themselves up for failure, nothing about the last 2 iPhone releases have been innovative at all. They can't just coast along on the iPhone brand forever.

Totally agree with you about the S4, I like the hardware but everything since the S2 has felt rubbish to me (mine is still going strong 3 years after purchase and I PUNISH my phones).

The SII is an absolute legend of a phone. I think ROM's are still being written for it. It holds a very important place for Android development.

Yeah the ROM community is still very active for the SII, they still get nightlies for CM, PA and a host of other ROMS.

It's a very regional thing as well I think, iPhones were very dominant in the Australian market up until last year but since the S3 came out it seems Android is the 'new thing'.
