Title: What foreign movie did you really like?

Sometimes i watch on netflix and on occasion i watch foreign movies.
There are some really good ones one can find and the ones i really liked where movies (spanish movie) like

with Antonio Banderas. A pretty gruesome thriller that is so dark that it made me shiver.

Another one i watched lately was a movie called "Doomsday Book"

which consist of 4 short films with different topics ranging from zombie to scifi. This is a korean film that i thought as a good film that had some really nice ideas.

Another really old now film i enjoyed was

I think I've said this loads of times here but my absolute favourite foreign film is "The Good, The Bad, The Weird"

I just think it's such a great movie..

Japanese:

The Hidden Fortress (1958) by Akira Kurosawa.  This is the samurai movie that George Lucas ripped off to make the original Star Wars.  It has sword fights. It has the princess.  It has the rescue.  It even has the two idiotic gay servants who became the droids in Lucas' sci-fi ripoff version.  (It's also better than Star Wars, and I'm actually a Star Wars fan.)

Dersu Uzala (1975) by Akira Kurosawa.  Filmed in Russia, during the cold war.  Greatness in every shot.  So much awesome.

All of the other Kurosawa films are awesome, and are better than anything you have ever seen, including but not limited to Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, and Rashomon.


French:

Rififi (1955) by Jules Dassin.  You think you know caper movies?  You know nothing.

The 400 Blows (1959) by Francois Truffaut.  The real deal.  French films don't get Frenchier than this. 

Le Samourai (1967) by Jean-Pierre Melville.  Wow.  I don't have words.

Going Places (1974) by Bertrand Blier.  Gerard Depardieu, before he became a fat jackass.  Miou Miou.  Undeclared class warfare.  The '70's.  So great.


Italian:

La Dolce Vita (1960) by Federico Fellini.  One of the greatest films of all time.  (And it gave us the word Paparazzi.)

8 1/2 (1963) by Federico Fellini.  It's great.  Beyond great.  What a movie could be, if you would let it.

There is one last Italian film, that I hate to mention.  Is it great?  I don't think so exactly.  Disturbing?  Somewhat.  Memorable?  Most definitely.  I saw this film almost 20 years ago, and it still haunts me to this day.  I can still remember it vividly.  Maybe it's just me, I dunno.  Maybe not.  The director was murdered by someone who was disturbed by this film.  The film is, Salo: 120 Days of Sodom (1975) by Pier Paolo Passolini.  I don't exactly recommend seeing it.  But you will never forget it if you do.

There are many more films from other countries, but this is all I have time for right now.  Except I will leave you with the Russian film, Battleship Potemkin (1926) by Sergei Eisenstein.  Simply great.  And not horrible like Salo.  Also I forgot to mention Ingmar Bergman.  All great.  Wild Strawberries or Virgin Spring would be great places to start.

Already been mentioned but Amelie will always hold a special place in my heart. The Intouchables was brilliant as well.

Technically most films available to me are foreign films, but that wouldn't make this any fun so I'll stick to non-English films.

Yes and no, right movie, wrong version. I don't speak Spanish so I've only seen the American remake.

Ohhhhhhh Pan's Labyrinth. Is that even considered foreign? Got an international release... but yeah, so good.

Well it's in Spanish, so I consider it foreign.
But yeah, it's good, the eye-guy(forget what he's called) is an amazing piece of character design which is something I like about del Toro. I would love to see him get to do At The Mountains of Madness, the artists he had working on that are all amazing at creature design.

also yesterday i watched another non-english foreign movie which i liked very much: el mariachi. one of the best action films i've seen, and quite impressive for its $7000 initial budget.

I catch it every time it's on TV, last time that happened was the first time the GF saw it, she spent half the film going "what the ****" and the other half laughing, which I guess sums it up pretty well. Amazing action film.

Tampopo!  Never watch that without having some ramen in the house, it will drive you crazy until you get a bowl of noodles!   :p

About 60-75% of everything I watch are foreign movies, particularly anything starring Jean Reno (Wasabi!) or any of Kurosawa's films.  Ones I really liked?  Delicatessen, The Quiet Earth, Sanjuro, Pan's Labyrinth, Mad Max, Dog Soldiers, and Iron Sky.

Bronson was so interesting because it told the story in an unusual way. 

I always forget that Guy Ritchie movies are foreign films.

Cidade de Deus (aka City of God) I would say one of the top 10 films I have ever seen, foreign or no. Just totally gripping.

Troll Hunter was great!

I really enjoyed this one as well, surprising how good the acting was for what was essentially a low-budget monster flick.  And the end scene, apparently using real news footage, was hilarious.   :thumb:

I was unimpressed by it.  It was decent up until the end.  It was one of those movies that I felt lived and died by the ending and the ending killed it for me.  I know others might disagree.

Well, assumptions are rampant. Since i live in the US i assume everyone else does. So yes, it was meant for movies not made in the US. In todays world its more complicated because there are many movies made abroad that do get funding from hollywood studios and vice versa.
But since we live in a global world, perhaps any movie can be foreign.

How could I forget Iron Sky?  So campy and ridiculous, but just a fun overall movie.  And it's on Netflix and I think Amazon Prime.

The Triplets of Belleville is tremendous fun!  One of my all-time favorite animated movies.

Another that's kind of stylized but really well written/acted is A Cat in Paris.  Not sure it's "foreign," though...
