Many people on the irc nowadays?

Did we just become best friends? Yup!
Internet assisted community MST3K? Sounds fun to me.
Would it be easiest for someone to stream something from their computer?
Cool. I'm glad some people are on board. So here are some things we need to discuss.
1) WHEN?
2) RESTRICTIONS eg. Porn (sorry guys)
3) METHOD OF DELIVERY eg. Stream
Anything else?

I've done this quite a few times before and it works really well. Using a streaming program also gives you an isolated chat room specific to the movie, allows everyone to always be at the same point in the movie, and doesn't require that everyone rent or buy the movie.
Either way though, I'm definitely in.

1) whenever, I'll probably be doing schoolwork anyway
2) nothing too NSFW, my computer is in the living room
3) Stream tends to be kinda ****ty. I use a program called BTSync to share my movies with my friends, and it doesn't bufffer becasue you're downloading.

Well this will be Movie Night. That excludes television series. And really I would like to try and keep this thing as serious as possible. That doesn't mean we can't have a good time. With that said, I can't exactly stop people from choosing things like veggie tales if that's truly what they want to pick. All I ask is that you consider the fact that this is supposed to be fun for everyone and choosing something like MLP movies or veggie tales will only lead to this thing losing traction and people not participating. So please make your choices with others in mind. Thank you.Veggie Tales has legitimate movies. In the spirit of good fun, I would also recommend some of the more interesting movies such as A Walk To Remember (a personal favourite, it's a shame I'm a guy), Titanic, The Notebook, and a crowd favourite, Slumdog Millionaire.
Pooti TangNice choice!
ooooo documentaries yes

Naw, gotta be something I can pay minimal attention to and find funny while drunk.

I like your attitude! I will most likely be drunk for every movie night too! But not every pick will be comedy of course. Dramas, Comedies, Horror, Action, thrillers etc. these are all welcome. And yes even love stories. Nothing wrong with a little man cry here and there is there? fellas? Anyone?ooooo documentaries yes

Is anyone good at setting up polls? This might make things a lot easier. A poll for time/day would be helpful. Weekends do seem logical.
Would good quality stuff that's still in theaters be an option?Hmm I guess this depends on how we watch. I can only speak for myself here but Cam versions and poor audio drive me completely mad. What does everyone else think?
There are some films you can get in DVD quality while they're still in the cinemas. Not sure on the sources of them.. although sometimes they're screeners that someone has uploaded before the movie even reaches cinemas.Would good quality stuff that's still in theaters be an option?Hmm I guess this depends on how we watch. EDIT: again if everyone is on board I'm cool with it.
I'm pretty sure my connection would be too poor to stream. But that doesn't mean someone else can't do it.
Great! I think we were all waiting for someone to take the reigns and offer streaming service.I'm pretty sure my connection would be too poor to stream. But that doesn't mean someone else can't do it.
My connection tests at 20 mb/s uploading. I think that's sufficient to get a good stream. I'd be happy to stream if people are interested in having one person stream consistently.
I already have a ton of "classic" movies on my computer, and I've streamed in the past so I have an idea of how to do it. That said, there's always room for improvement. I have used Livestream Procaster in the past. Does anyone know of a significantly better way to do it? I've even got a channel on there called "Movie_Streamer". :thumb:
If someone else would like to take charge on the streaming end, feel free to do so, I don't mean to barge in and take control - or if we want to rotate who streams that works too.
And to anyone questioning stream quality: it's not perfect. But for a fun streaming event I generally don't tend to care about that, as long as I can see what's going on. Typically people chat and are talking anyway, so it's not an "ideal" environment in that sense to begin with.
I'm also in if the time is right. This sounds fun. :)Glad to have you on the bridge Mr. Spock
So.. how about the chat? Voice or text? Skype/IRC?
Is there any way to participate in the stream chat while not watching the stream? For those of us who download our own copy of the film that want to participate in the chat?

You would be able to pause the stream and still chat.
Stream chat is pretty terrible. I'd prefer Skype or IRC.

Voice is not a good idea in my opinion. Also it would be best to avoid using things that require accounts, as some of us might not have them or any interest in signing up for them.
Well if you're all (or most of us) going to have the stream open anyway, why not just chat in there? And this is going to happen more than once so creating an account shouldn't be that big a deal.

You don't actually even have to create an account to chat in the stream. You simply give it a nickname you'd like to associate yourself with, very similar to how IRC works. So the only reason to not use the stream chat would be if many people won't be streaming it at all and they don't want to have the stream open and bother with that.
Unless of course there's another reason to prefer IRC, but I haven't heard anything so far. So in my opinion, if most people are streaming anyway, it's a bit of a no-brainer to use the stream chat.
This is awesome YM88. Hoping you guys dont have this over the next two weekends since I'll be AFK but I'm still game as long as it keeps going :D.It all depends on how fast people submit their choices. I think I will let voting continue until ...... next Friday I guess (sept 27th) over a week to vote.
first movie marley and me.FINE!!!.... I NEVER LIKED IT HERE ANYWAY!!! :(
first one to cry has to leave geekhack
My first vote is for Jiro Dreams of Sushi :DI hate totally forgotten about that. It's pretty great! :thumb:

I've got to propose "Something, Something, Something Dark Side." I just don't get tired of this thing.
You could have made a single poll, and done check boxes. I'd be down for any night of the weekend, but I can only choose one in your pollFirst time making polls. It's gonna have to do I guess.
Nub question: What will we be watching the movie on? netflix, hulu etc or a Geekhack special source? So far it looks like we will be watching on an online streaming service that streams the film off of a users computer. However, you can download the movie on your own and press play simultaneously using a countdown timer I will provide each week. You're free to watch from any source you'd like. The chat we I'll be having during the movie will most likely be via the streaming service judging by the poll question so far, so you will need to pause the stream and watch your own source if that's the rout you wish to take. This way you can still chat with us. I believe hoffmanmyster has the details on this streaming service.
I love documentaries if only it's not redneck usa crap ;) But it would be cool to see local Docu's from the people outside of the US.

I've got only about 13 voters so far in the polls. If that's a reflection of the level of participation we will have I don't think that will be an issue.I believe hoffmanmyster has the details on this streaming service.
I like to use Livestream Procaster. I've streamed many movies this way and have a channel dedicated to movie streaming. One minor drawback: an un-verified channel has a 50-viewer limit. I tried to verify my channel but there isn't enough content yet so that didn't work out. Because of this, if we end up with more than 50 viewers attempting to watch, we will have issues. Thoughts?

Send me a PM of what you voted and what you would like to change it to. I'll make the switch
Yeah, I just realized the times were in EST so 4pm PST won't work for me at all. Can I change my vote?
I vote for Hentai Kamen! You guys will just LOVE it!(http://i.imgur.com/IJR5fPp.png)

Thanks for offering to host the stream, Hoffman! So, how would this work? Do participants need to make an account, or is it open to the public?
I'm pretty sure Hoff won't be able to host the stream every single week, so once we get into this we will need to make sure we have a host each week.
Thats great! Just be sure to let us know if for any reason you can't. And as far as advance notice goes I'll be picking the movie well ahead of time. I will have a regular draw date. Thanks for offering to host the stream, Hoffman! So, how would this work? Do participants need to make an account, or is it open to the public?
To view the streaming service I use, you simply enter in the URL of the streaming channel and click play to view the stream. To chat, you need to create a "profile" (start talking and it will ask you to identify with a username - that's it, no registration or anything).I'm pretty sure Hoff won't be able to host the stream every single week, so once we get into this we will need to make sure we have a host each week.
I'm more than happy to stream every week if people are happy with the way I do it. I might not be able to watch every week due to homework, but I can start the stream and walk away if need be. All I'd need is ample time to get the movie downloaded and ready to go. Or I'd be perfectly happy letting other people stream too! Just saying, if it comes down to it I certainly don't mind streaming. :)
Cool site. Thanks Hoffman!YES!! Life aquatic would be an excellent choice!
Go team Zissou!

Try and so no to THAT.
Zissou has been one of those 'I'll watch it soon' films for about a year. I'd be up for watching it! :DWes Anderson is very much a Love or Hate filmmaker. I love everything he has made.
How do we get the movies to everyone.. setup torrent? You can download the movie yourself if you'd like, that's what I will be doing. But as mentioned before, we will be using a streaming service for those of us who would rather stream. Hoffmanmyster has offered to stream each week via livestream procaster.
@ 40Mbit upload, A bluray takes an 1.5 hours to upload
I hope you guys have at least that much bandwidth.

It certainly is not. But you are free to acquire a bluray version independently and hit play when my countdown timer hits zero like the rest of us. Sync it with the stream if the opening credits run longer on your version. Might be tricky but can you place a price on quality? How do we get the movies to everyone.. setup torrent? You can download the movie yourself if you'd like, that's what I will be doing. Sorry double post. If the suggestion list is low I can add one but rather see something that I haven't yet.So far the suggestion list is very low. Only like 5 so far. So please spread the word and get your picks in. Once the date comes closer I will post the list. I will be making an Official movie night thread that's not an IC so I can reserve a few posts after the OP. Polls are ending tonight but I will be taking movie picks continuously as long as this goes on.
Anywhere we can see what other peoples picks are?once I get more movie picks in and the polls are closed, I will create the official movie night thread and post the list of everyones picks
