Title: [IC] Geekhack Movie Night!? (Poll Questions Added)
Post by: YoungMichael88 on Sat, 14 September 2013, 04:27:42
Would anyone be interested in this? Here's how it would work.

- Same night/time each week
- each member picks ONE movie to be drawn from a hat a few days in advance of movie night
- Unpicked movies carry over to next week.
- If your movie is picked you put in a new entry for next week.
- if you're unavailable for any reason you just end up missing that week (sorry)
- Join an IRC with other viewers while watching (optional)
- For those in IRC, pause at your own risk (spoilers would be inevitable at that point)
- If you don't like the movie that is picked then just don't watch I guess.
- movies should be ones released to the public (not currently in theaters)

PLEASE SEND ME YOUR MOVIE PICS VIA PM!
Subject: Movie Night
Body: Username - Movie Pick (eg. YoungMichael88 - The Life Aquatic)

GOOGLE POLLS: (CLOSED)

FINAL RESULTS
- Fridays at Midnight EST (11pm Central, 10pm Mountain, 9pm Pacific)
- Stream Chat
- Documentaries ARE allowed

A big thank you to everyone who voted! Please send me your movie picks!

I've done this quite a few times before and it works really well.  Using a streaming program also gives you an isolated chat room specific to the movie, allows everyone to always be at the same point in the movie, and doesn't require that everyone rent or buy the movie.

Either way though, I'm definitely in.

1) WHEN?
2) RESTRICTIONS eg. Porn (sorry guys)
3) METHOD OF DELIVERY eg. Stream

Anything else?

3) METHOD OF DELIVERY eg. Stream

Anything else?

1)  Not Sunday (American football) or Monday (school restrictions).  Other than that, every night is about the same for me personally.
2)  None.  As long as it's an actual movie, since that's the point of this.
3)  I prefer stream, as I've said before.
Title: Re: [IC] Geekhack Movie Night!?
Post by: Photekq on Sat, 14 September 2013, 14:22:04
1) Friday or Saturday is by far the best for me. On those nights I'm nocturnal so any time is fine.
2) Restrictions? Aww.. So no bible black drinking games? :(
3) Stream's best probably.

4) Voice or text chat? Skype/IRC/stream-chat?

2. Anything goes, it is more about the fun we have.
3. Anything
4. Anything.

Oh, look, i;m perfectly flexible.

A weekend seems the logical rout to take. Regardless of what night it ends up being, my work schedule will allow me to make two movie nights a month.

In a little while I will set up an actual thread for this and reserve the second post for a numbered user/movie list. I will then take your picks via PM.

SUBJECT: Movie Night
BODY: User name - Movie Title

So start thinking fellas. I'll tell you when to start sending picks once we determine a night.

This sounds like the best way to do it. Someone should create a stream profile and everyone could be in stream chat.

Streaming sounds pretty cool. I have one question. Lets say I'm streaming a movie to 20 people. Would my Internet connection end up bogging everyone down as more and more people stream?

1) whenever, I'll probably be doing schoolwork anyway

2) nothing too NSFW, my computer is in the living room

3) Stream tends to be kinda ****ty. I use a program called BTSync to share my movies with my friends, and it doesn't bufffer becasue you're downloading.

Haven't had any problems with watching movies over streams. Hell, I watched Toy Story 3 like two weeks ago with over 50 people. As long as the streamer has a decent upload and a computer that can stream comfortably at high quality, then it's all on the watcher's side.

Well this will be Movie Night. That excludes television series. And really I would like to try and keep this thing as serious as possible. That doesn't mean we can't have a good time. With that said, I can't exactly stop people from choosing things like veggie tales if that's truly what they want to pick. All I ask is that you consider the fact that this is supposed to be fun for everyone and choosing something like MLP movies or veggie tales will only lead to this thing losing traction and people not participating. So please make your choices with others in mind. Thank you.

Veggie Tales has legitimate movies. In the spirit of good fun, I would also recommend some of the more interesting movies such as A Walk To Remember (a personal favourite, it's a shame I'm a guy), Titanic, The Notebook, and a crowd favourite, Slumdog Millionaire.

Hmm I guess this depends on how we watch. I can only speak for myself here but Cam versions and poor audio drive me completely mad. What does everyone else think?

EDIT: again if everyone is on board I'm cool with it.

There are some films you can get in DVD quality while they're still in the cinemas. Not sure on the sources of them.. although sometimes they're screeners that someone has uploaded before the movie even reaches cinemas.

As long as its not amateur video and you can find a good source to share with us then I don't see a problem with it. I'm not going to do quality control or anything like that so if people start busting your balls halfway through then just be ready for it haha. When I pick a name from a random generator I will announce it long enough beforehand that we can work as a group to find a good version. So it's up to you guys.

I'm pretty sure my connection would be too poor to stream. But that doesn't mean someone else can't do it.

My connection tests at 20 mb/s uploading.  I think that's sufficient to get a good stream.  I'd be happy to stream if people are interested in having one person stream consistently.

I already have a ton of "classic" movies on my computer, and I've streamed in the past so I have an idea of how to do it.  That said, there's always room for improvement.  I have used Livestream Procaster in the past.  Does anyone know of a significantly better way to do it?  I've even got a channel on there called "Movie_Streamer".   :thumb:

If someone else would like to take charge on the streaming end, feel free to do so, I don't mean to barge in and take control - or if we want to rotate who streams that works too.

And to anyone questioning stream quality: it's not perfect.  But for a fun streaming event I generally don't tend to care about that, as long as I can see what's going on.  Typically people chat and are talking anyway, so it's not an "ideal" environment in that sense to begin with.

So.. how about the chat? Voice or text? Skype/IRC?

I like text because having 10+ people talking at the same time would be really confusing.
There's a built-in chat interface in all streaming programs that we can use, unless you see benefits to skype or IRC (are there any?).

Is there any way to participate in the stream chat while not watching the stream? For those of us who download our own copy of the film that want to participate in the chat?

Also my vote is for typing. I don't really want to listen through headphones and I would echo your audio through a voice chat with my speakers. Also the voices would conflict with the movie.

I'm curious what you dislike about stream chat.  I keep seeing people mentioning possibly using Skype or IRC but not offering any reasons that they are better or that the stream chat is insufficient.  Can you expand a bit?

I think IRC would be fine..maybe a new channel?

Well if you're all (or most of us) going to have the stream open anyway, why not just chat in there? And this is going to happen more than once so creating an account shouldn't be that big a deal. Unless of course there IS something wrong with the stream chat service as suggested before. I will be downloading the movie for myself but syncing it with the stream so we are all on the same page. Tomorrow I will attempt to make several google polls and stream chat vs Skype chat vs IRC will be one of them. As well as a Friday vs. Saturday poll (unless someone expresses interest for during the week before tomorrow). I've never used google Docs so this should be interesting to say the least. I'm hoping we can do the first movie night in 2 weekends from now. (Sept 27th or 28th). This way everyone has time to submit their movie picks.

Also if more than one person picks the same movie do you want to be given a second pick or increased odds for that movie?

Well if you're all (or most of us) going to have the stream open anyway, why not just chat in there? And this is going to happen more than once so creating an account shouldn't be that big a deal.

You don't actually even have to create an account to chat in the stream.  You simply give it a nickname you'd like to associate yourself with, very similar to how IRC works.  So the only reason to not use the stream chat would be if many people won't be streaming it at all and they don't want to have the stream open and bother with that.

Unless of course there's another reason to prefer IRC, but I haven't heard anything so far.  So in my opinion, if most people are streaming anyway, it's a bit of a no-brainer to use the stream chat.

Yea... one would have been better, and include either multiple selection or something like no preference. Also you should have made text box for username and movie suggestion so you could have had it all in one place instead of keeping track of it via PM.

Nub question: What will we be watching the movie on? netflix, hulu etc or a Geekhack special source?

I love documentaries if only it's not redneck usa crap ;) But it would be cool to see local Docu's from the people outside of the US.

So far it looks like we will be watching on an online streaming service that streams the film off of a users computer. However, you can download the movie on your own and press play simultaneously using a countdown timer I will provide each week. You're free to watch from any source you'd like. The chat we I'll be having during the movie will most likely be via the streaming service judging by the poll question so far, so you will need to pause the stream and watch your own source if that's the rout you wish to take. This way you can still chat with us. I believe hoffmanmyster has the details on this streaming service.

I like to use Livestream Procaster.  I've streamed many movies this way and have a channel dedicated to movie streaming.  One minor drawback: an un-verified channel has a 50-viewer limit.  I tried to verify my channel but there isn't enough content yet so that didn't work out.  Because of this, if we end up with more than 50 viewers attempting to watch, we will have issues.  Thoughts?

I've got only about 13 voters so far in the polls. If that's a reflection of the level of participation we will have I don't think that will be an issue.

Thanks for offering to host the stream, Hoffman! So, how would this work? Do participants need to make an account, or is it open to the public?

To view the streaming service I use, you simply enter in the URL of the streaming channel and click play to view the stream.  To chat, you need to create a "profile" (start talking and it will ask you to identify with a username - that's it, no registration or anything).

I'm pretty sure Hoff won't be able to host the stream every single week, so once we get into this we will need to make sure we have a host each week.

I'm more than happy to stream every week if people are happy with the way I do it.  I might not be able to watch every week due to homework, but I can start the stream and walk away if need be.  All I'd need is ample time to get the movie downloaded and ready to go.  Or I'd be perfectly happy letting other people stream too!  Just saying, if it comes down to it I certainly don't mind streaming.  :)

It certainly is not. But you are free to acquire a bluray version independently and hit play when my countdown timer hits zero like the rest of us. Sync it with the stream if the opening credits run longer on your version. Might be tricky but can you place a price on quality?
