tl;dr
cops are ****heads on a power trip
black, white, asian, hispanic doesn't matter. a cop is not there to protect you.
-
If have half a brain you know that racism exists.
-
"I don't see race, only financial standing"
-
MY brother-in-law is a cop. He says that one of his favorite things to do is whopped on somebody. not helping stereotypes.
-
well the way I see it is there must be a reason why they decide to go into that field in the first place. Maybe for some it's to uphold justice, but that's probably unlikely. I'm not saying ALL cops are power hungry but it's certainly the majority.
-
Since I'm young, they consider me the enemy
They kill ten of me to get the job correct
To serve, protect, and break a niggas neck

^This.
I took an introductory psych class in college, and the textbook flat out stated this as a fact. People who like to exert their authority over other people gravitate to occupations like police officer, and to a lesser extent, firefighter. And they use their position not to serve and protect, but to instill fear and demand respect.
I can't count the number of news stories I've read about cops beating "suspects," for reasons that could all be summarized as "not showing enough respect."
My father, who was a left-winger from way back (born in 1911), used to maintain that law enforcement officer should be a civic role, and that positions should be filled by lottery or draft. Anyone who actually volunteered to be a cop would be automatically disqualified.
Sounds good to me.

Cops beat up and shoot all sorts of people with all sorts of looks, shapes, and colors. Many times it is unjustified and they get a slap on the wrist for it. I don't think racism is the big problem here--I think innocent people getting harrassed, hurt, and shot by cops is.
dude, even the police admit that race plays a huge role in their response: http://www.hrw.org/legacy/reports/reports98/police/uspo17.htm

the bottom line is most cops are power hungry ****s that were bullied in school or were bullies themselves and are protected by corrupt judges and unions that makes them impossible to punish and when punished it's just a slap on the wrist.

The NYPD just shoots innocent bystanders now. They don't even bother with the original suspect. They just open fire on a crowd in Times Square.

It seems cops don't get any consequences for doing so.

Seems more like a case of a cop going "oh no, a black man!" and shooting in a panic, rather than deliberate racist victimisation. Not that doesn't exist in the police force as well.

I think those New York cops would be in better shape if they used Windows 98. Windows 98 could save lives!
NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg has solved this problem already. The NYPD uses Bloomberg's own proprietary software (which he sold them after becoming mayor). The NYC 911 emergency telephone also uses Bloomberg's proprietary software. In NYC, if you call 911, your call may get lost in the computer system for 3-4 hours, before somebody even notices that you called. System cost: $88,000,000 (USD). Lost Calls: only 33%. Bottom line: Bloomberg is a computer genius. You should all have some Bloomberg in your lives. And Mayor Mike wants to bring his kind of computer magic to you. After you get Bloomberg'ed, you will wish you had the smooth efficiency of Windows 98. (Bloomberg wants to be your President in 2016, too.)

I could go on and on. Europe has a long history of racism and racially motivated murders, just more people sweep it under the rug than in the US. The US is far from a utopia, but making the claim that Europe is some enlightened land of people is utter bull****. If that were the case, Golden Dawn wouldn't exist and European countries wouldn't be enacting the xenphobic and Islamophobic laws many of the countries pass and put up for vote.
I'm just sick and tired of European countries, Russia, and all these other countries around the world saying they're better than the US on the race front when they're just as bad, if not worse because they don't ****ing admit there's a race issue. At least here in the US we acknowledge that racial conflict and disparity still exists.

Two white men found guilty of 1993 killing in a case that a senior British judge said revealed "institutional racism".
wow! sure, that makes sense! thank you, nubbinator!

Not sure if sarcasm or seriousness, but I honestly hope that you do realize that racism is still a massive issue in Europe and there are many racially, ethnically, and religiously motivated crimes throughout Europe still to this day. The only real way to address racism is to admit that problems still persist and that it's not just an "American" thing and not just something in people's heads.

racism is still a massive issue in Europe
you sure see it better from the other side of the pond.

Let's not limit it to race. Look at wonderful homophobic russian laws. But Europe can do no wrong.

Is being scared of a black person always motivated by racism? Or could it motivated by other factors? If so, when is it not racist to be afraid of a black person?

If you're scared of someone because of their race there's no way to classify it as anything other than racism. If you're scared of someone because it's dark, you're in a bad neighborhood, and they're in gang colors dressed like a banger, that's one thing, but scared of someone because they're black, that's racism.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/sep/01/russia-rise-homophobic-violence
Russia has experienced an upsurge in homophobic vigilantism following the introduction of legislation outlawing "homosexual propaganda" in June, gay and lesbian groups say.
The new laws, which have cast a shadow over the Winter Olympics to be held in Sochi early next year, ban the promotion of "non-traditional sexual relations" among minors.
That law?

That's reasonable.

What if they're wearing a hoodie? Is it okay to be afraid of a black guy wearing a hoodie? How about a black guy wearing a Bill Cosby sweater?
Full disclosure: I find Bill Cosby sweaters to be terrifying.

Again, are you scared because they're black or because of codes that generally signify someone is up to no good? Your hoodie example, let's say a hoodie with the hood up at night not making eye contact or hanging out near alleys, definitely signals someone being up to no good regardless of their race. The problem is when you base your actions upon race, color, religion, and so on and not upon symbolic codes (gang colors, hoodie up at night, etc.) and actions (acting nervous, touching a waistband frequently like they're checking that something is still there) that generally denote criminal activity.

Missing the point here.
cops are ****s.

America is no more racist than Europe and vice versa, the human race is sad and pathetic, people are desperate to categorise everyone and everything.
Integration and education are key in removing racism, but its a slow and drawn out measure that politicians can't realistically use to campaign on for the idiotic masses. I also feel that people feeling that there race is important to 'who they are' only helps to reinforce institutional racism, skin colour doesn't and shouldn't define who you are as a person.
It always amuses me how people immigrate into other countries (English people are just as guilty of this in places like Spain) and then live in communities of people from similar backgrounds/faiths or from the same country and then wonder why the natives grow negative feelings forwards them... what do you expect?
I've had the pleasure of being both privately and state educated and was shocked (literally) that when I went to state college all of the Asian guys there would be more than happy to chat with you in classes, but as soon as you left the class room they would all join together in one area and only really talk to other Asian guys. It was bizarre... and a lot of them were from different countries....

I think it's a combination of these factors. If one of those factors is the person's race, and that combination of factors rises to the level of what someone might deem 'scary', is it still racist? Can race even allowed to be considered a factor? This sort of 'racism calculus' is amusing, but I can't help but feel that this is all really just about being able to cry "racism" whenever humanly possible. Are people allowed to filter all these factors through their experiences with various races? Or is that also racist? Has anyone, ever heard of a black person being shot by a white person, and someone calmly saying, "Well, the black person was wearing gang colors and acting very suspicously." and not had their life and career ruined by the 'black leadership'?
It's never happened. Those extenuating circumstances never matter to the racial arsonists, never.
The person being shot is black, and the shooter was white -- case closed.
I agree that there are people of all races who will fit into the behaviors you described. White people who wear gang colors, who dress like thugs and touch their waistbands, or expose their underwear to the world, they're lowlifes. Sorry, brah. White people like me refer to those sorts of people as 'white trash' and feel little to no kinship with them -- there's no solidarity at all, not in my family. They may be white in a technical sense, but not culturally, not at all. I'd rather live as the only white guy in a neighborhood filled with Bill Cosbys than live with them, because I have more in common with Cosby.
But if I feel the same way about a black person who acts the same way as white trash, I'm a racist. Maybe it's not their race and their behavior that's 'scary'? No, no, not possible -- I must be a racist. What I'll never understand is why black people who share my values put up with black people who act as described above, and give them moral coverage. Black people with great values have to stand up and say that those 'gangster' sort of blacks, aren't really 'black' they're something else entirely. But to date, I don't feel they have.
Well, actually Bill Cosby did: http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~schochet/101/Cosby_Speech.htm
Brown Versus the Board of Education is no longer the white person’s problem. We’ve got to take the neighborhood back (clapping). We’ve got to go in there. Just forget telling your child to go to the Peace Corps. It’s right around the corner. (laughter) It’s standing on the corner. It can’t speak English. It doesn’t want to speak English. I can’t even talk the way these people talk. “Why you ain’t where you is go, ra,” I don’t know who these people are. And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk (laughter). Then I heard the father talk. This is all in the house. You used to talk a certain way on the corner and you got into the house and switched to English. Everybody knows it’s important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can’t land a plane with “why you ain’t…” You can’t be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth. There is no Bible that has that kind of language. Where did these people get the idea that they’re moving ahead on this. Well, they know they’re not, they’re just hanging out in the same place, five or six generations sitting in the projects when you’re just supposed to stay there long enough to get a job and move out.

Good luck getting a quality education if you live in the ghetto. Not only is there income, health, and education inequality for low income minorities, but they lack the social capital (read network ties) that middle class families tend to have and that tend to be the things that actually get you decent paying jobs. When all your friends and family friends work at minimum wage jobs, it's hard to get those network ties that help pull you out.
Of course, it's easier to generalize and just say that they're all just lazy and that's why they're poor. I mean, that's why we have so many poor Hispanic people in America, right? They're all off getting drunk off tequila and having siestas.

Because I worded it to be facetious. He didn't actually just go "black guy!" and shoot, there was a bunch of other factors, like the fact the guy came sprinting at him (allegedly). I'm not defending the cop, I'm just saying his actions were cowardly, inept, and trigger-happy (which is what I expect of US police tbh) rather than outright racist.

No it's not. Grow up. Context is relevant, obviously. But people really should just stop playing this game where we all pretend it's racist to take a person's race into consideration when weighing up judgement calls.

Those are disadvantages, but they're also excuses. The real thing that holds back people in deprived areas, whether it's black people in projects or white people in trailer parks is that those places have have a culture of laziness and unwarranted self-entitlement that stretches back generations. Look at the demographics of immigrants, whether they're Southeast Asian, African, Eastern European, whatever, they have the same disadvantages as domestic poor people yet don't exhibit any of the same behaviour, and actually find employment, start businesses, encourage their kids to do well academically, and actually improve their lot over successive generations.

The real thing that holds back people in deprived areas, whether it's black people in projects or white people in trailer parks is that those places have have a culture of laziness and unwarranted self-entitlement that stretches back generations. Look at the demographics of immigrants, whether they're Southeast Asian, African, Eastern European, whatever, they have the same disadvantages as domestic poor people yet don't exhibit any of the same behaviour, and actually find employment, start businesses, encourage their kids to do well academically, and actually improve their lot over successive generations.
oh also this. poor people are lazy? **** you. that's personal.

There's a really nasty element in American society that used to slink around and mutter their vile sneers in private. Now they feel empowered by the right-wing nutjobs infesting the Republican Party and the completely insane Tea-Baggers to voice their opinions in the public square, vociferously and vehemently.
I'm not a religious person, but I consider people like these to be evil.

There's this nasty, evil, racist group of white Americans called 'progressives' who, over the past half century, have decided that another way to compete socially is to prove how unracist they are. In the process of doing this they have created a massive welfare state that destroyed the black family in America, forcing a group of Americans who, though poor, had a powerful set of social values. These values have been destroyed by white liberals, who compete with one another by basting themselves in white guilt. This is racist because they simply assume that black Americans could never get anywhere without all these programs to assist them. Isn't racism (at the center of its black, tarry heart) the sincere belief that some other group of people are inherently inferior? What does the constant coddling of black Americans say, if not that? Start treating black Americans like adults -- they can take it.
Does racism still exist in some hearts? It must. But does that evil remain codified into law. No. Not like in Russia. Which is funny -- there are America-hating Europeans that just love to see Americans self-flagellate over race. It's pretty ****ing sad.

Oh, so you think that social welfare programs only benefit African-Americans? Must just blow your little mind to be reminded of the fact that MOST WELFARE RECIPIENTS ARE WHITE, eh?
And a few more facts for you. Social safety net programs like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, SNAP, and so forth, are the only reason that many older people, disabled people, veterans, and children in America are able to live.
You think that progressive policies like these are somehow cheating all you hard-working, virtuous Republicans of your money? Wake up and look around you. Right-wing majority states, like most of the Old South, receive MORE welfare dollars than they ever pay into the system.
The fact that we have programs like these are because we as a nation are committed to helping those who need help. Despite the best efforts of Republitards to gut these programs at every opportunity.
Meh. As amusing as it is to read right-wing ranting about the eeeeeevillllsssss of social welfare programs, at the end of the day I could care less about your opinion. Your point of view represents a bitter minority of Americans, people who would only be satisfied were we to return to the bad old days of debtor prisons, poorhouses, and child labor.
Not going to happen.

Oh, so you think that social welfare programs only benefit African-Americans?
Nope -- I never said that Greystoke.
Must just blow your little mind to be reminded of the fact that MOST WELFARE RECIPIENTS ARE WHITE, eh?
Not really. Most welfare recipients are white and live in non-urban areas.
And a few more facts for you. Social safety net programs like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, SNAP, and so forth, are the only reason that many older people, disabled people, veterans, and children in America are able to live.
People who are truly helpless like the elderly, children and the mentally ill should receive help -- whether it be from the local community or government, America is an affluent enough nation to do this. I think it's very sad Greystoke that for all your posing about being above the discussion the only argument you can present is that I am heartless for opposing the current welfare policy. I feel that the existing welfare safety net has become a hammock for some people. I never said all people, so you should try to calm yourself down and not be so emotional. You say I'm heartless? Well, I think the existing system encourages young men (of all races) to bring children into the world, and then leave the child and the mother. That's brainless.
I can show you statistics that show that fatherlessness has been a problem for nearly every racial group, but that it has hit Latino and Blacks especially hard.
You think that progressive policies like these are somehow cheating all you hard-working, virtuous Republicans of your money?
I'm a Libertarian, actually. I vote Republican because the Libertarian candidate is too crazy (free and open borders, woo!) and has no chance of winning. As for my money, and how Progressives decide to use it -- I wouldn't mind them taking my money if they only used it well. Instead, their efforts actually hurt the people they're supposed to be helping. Stick around as long as I have Greystoke, and you start to realize that the problems of today look eerily like yesterdays solutions.
Wake up and look around you. Right-wing majority states, like most of the Old South, receive MORE welfare dollars than they ever pay into the system.
That's an interesting claim -- I wonder if it's true. Regardless, I think it would benefit everyone (of all races) if the receipt of welfare benefits to able-bodied people continued to require that find work within a certain time frame. But President Obama is gutting that work requirement.
Your point of view represents a bitter minority of Americans, people who would only be satisfied were we to return to the bad old days of debtor prisons, poorhouses, and child labor.
You're being very, very emotional about this Greystoke. But follow his logic people: anyone who suggests that we re-evaluate the welfare system is someone who wants to see the return of debtor prisons and child labor. That's a laughably stupid argument. Progressives are stupid because they can't own up to the fact that their policies not only don't work, they hurt their intended beneficiaries.
As for police, it's a tough job and I never interface with police except when I'm getting a parking infraction in NYC. To me, they're basically tax collectors. Are all of them corrupt and evil? No. I don't really like to be bossed around by anyone, including police. Do I think authoritarian-oriented, peaked-in-high-school type people are drawn to the career? Maybe. I don't think they hunt minorities, as described by some. I would make their union illegal so that officers who are corrupt or inept can be fired, and I would make cops who break laws face stiffer penalties. I would keep stop and frisk in NYC because it has demonstrably saved the lives of young men over the last few years.

It's exceptionally easy to have enough money to afford food and housing in the developed world with even the lowest rung of employment, even in some Mcjob. Medical care is different in the US (I'm in the UK), I agree. Yes, some people are genuinely unemployed despite their best efforts, but the majority of the unemployed are feckless, lazy and from generations of unemployed parents. So yeah, for those same people to think the government and the rest of society should fund their existence is absolutely self-entitled in my opinion.
