Title: As gifts.
Post by: Melvang on Thu, 19 September 2013, 09:26:14
Have any of you guys bought a mechanical keyboard for a relative or good friend as a birthday/christmas/any other holiday gift?  How well did it go over?

I'm currently 'buying' my mom a full size board her birthday. I just can't decide what to get her. I'm considering sending her this type heaven I'm typing on now or getting her a cooler master XT with browns.

I bought a QFR with blues for my girlfriend and she loves it.
I told my brother to buy a full-size board with blues and now he loves it.

I've noticed that many new users are quite fond of MX blues.

Did you buy her the Blues after she tried out all the switches at Keycon keymaster?

My mom thinks my TKL keyboards are cute and calls them miniature typewriters.  I've been planning for a while to get her a TKL of some sort and paint it lavender with flower designs, to match a case I customized for her computer.  Pretty sure she'd like it.  With that said, I think each person should be treated on a case-by-case basis, as some couldn't care less what they type on.

It was after the first Chicago meet-up. Her "dream" board is a full-size with either Valentine or Klaxxon set.

Ah ok, I thought it was just curious that she got blues after trying out every switch ever. And Valentine's is coming out again :D.

I haven't bought anyone a mechanical keyboard yet. My mom thought the colors and the Clacks on my KMAC was cute as hell. My sister has a Blue switch keychain and she loved that and the Whites on my Pure. And my friend wanted to steal my Blackwidow after trying out the Blues. I did show off my Pure to some friends and one got a G710+.

Lily set here would be my vote.

The reason I was asking guys was because I am planning on getting my aunt and uncle each a mech board for christmas.  She is a programmer and he manages 8 servers out of the house.  My uncle told me that he goes through a rubber dome keyboard about every 6 months and would love to have something like the old IBM's.  So he is getting a unicomp.  Also I sent my aunt some switches and she really liked the reds so with how much she acutally types it is PBT or nothing for her.  So I am eyeballing this keyboard (http://www.mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=475) for her.

Plus I need to add some "Geekhack" to each one so for the unicomp I have already bought a set of the "Geekhack.org" function keys in style 2 where the site is front printed and I am on the lookout for a "Geekhack" esc key for hers.

My brother-in-law was asking a lot of questions about mechanical keyboards.  I let him try my QFR w/ blues (before I modded it to vintage browns) and he loved the clicky and the extra mouse space he had without the number pad.  He said that he'd get one soon

So, my wife and I got him a QFR w/ Blues for his birthday.  He now has trouble typing on rubberdome keyboards since it feels...weird.  His words not mine. :p

I have the same issue when I have to use my wifes computer.  I have been using browns in my costar das for a while now.  I can't stand the feel of much of anything else now.

All of my uncles on my father's side are engineers and computer programmers.  They LOVE them.

I bought a co-worker a new Unicomp 101 Model M last year for Christmas.  He was without a doubt the loudest typest I have ever heard on the company provided rubber dome keyboards we had; which he always attributed to learning to type on older mechanical typewriters.

I figured the Model M would help him get the tactile feedback he was getting from harshly bottoming out with a rubber dome board - and it would probably even louder with him typing on the Unicomp.

He loves his Model M.

I have a hard time convincing my brother to get a mech keyboard. He's tried my brown, red, and blues, yet he says he still likes typing on his $5 DELL rubber dome keyboard. He's a scientist and types research papers all the time. Probably uses a keyboard more than me as a programmer... yet he loves his crappy $5 rubber dome keyboard. My wife thinks this keyboard fascination is odd.

I bought my wife a Filco Majesttouch 2 with red switches. It took a while until she could write on it (reds are very softly in contrast to rubberdomes :p).

I don't buy them as presents, but I do provide recommendations to close friends on family on what to buy in terms of their next keyboard upgrade and what not.

The trick is to find the Right keyboard.  My OH was adamant about preferring his Old wireless Logitech RD keyboard and criticizing all mechanical keyboards I'd offered, even a Filco with ergo-Clears Id made and painted specifically for him.  ...Until I got him a full-sized Ducky Shine with Clears.  He loved it immediately.  How did it happen?  Well, I had to really listen to his feedback, and he only likes full sized keyboards with numpad on the right.  He appears to not like Costar stabilizers or Cherry profile caps.  I knew he'd like stock Clears based on him trying lots of other switches.  And finally he likes the white backlight and media keys (lol).

So moral of this story is: your friends and relatives most likely would love a specific mechanical keyboard--you just need to figure out what attributes would make them appreciate the swap.

That is very specific requirements for a keyboard.  I have so many different ones I guess I'm just easy to please :)

That's because your hobby is keyboards (or one of them).  Most people think about their keyboards as a utility and are happy with just one.  If you're talking about getting someone to like a keyboard, it's going to be The One.  It might get them to become interested and try more in the future--but it might not.  Everyone I know just has one keyboard per computer.  Maybe one or two rubber domes in storage as old extras.

Where are all these extra Xs in Klaxon coming from?

Also, I bought my roommate a 103u topper and it's his favorite thing ever.

I got a filco with browns for my dad's birthday a couple years back. He absolutely loves it. His wife hates it (because of the noise.)
