Has anyone tried one of these before? I'm wondering what it would feel like to use when projected over something soft like a towel.

The main issue is is typos a lot since it uses cameras and of course its like typing on a touch screen no tactility whatsoever.
Also it works on mainly flat surfaces and I guess its really portable just not really useful I guess its better than typing on a palmtop or mobile phone but its uses apart from that are quite limited.

It isn't really clear if your fingers have to make contact with the surface or not.

doesn't have to make contact it just has to block out the key as it uses a camera to check which keys have been blocked out so you can't just hover your hand over the projected keyboard. a perfect solution would require multiple cameras but then it loses its key feature which is portability
