Title: CPTBadAss and Dorkvader Roadtrip Across the USA [Writeup+Pics Completed]
Post by: CPTBadAss on Sat, 21 September 2013, 09:24:04
Final writeup links found here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=48816.msg1049919#msg1049919)

So you ever thought to yourself, "Self, I'd love to hang out with some other GeekHackers but I'm far too lazy to leave my house and the comforts of GeekHack.org"? Well, I have the solution for you. Why bother leaving your house when we'll bring the party to you? After all, the party don't start til I walk in, you know?

But in all seriousness, we have car and are willing to meet up. Dorkvader and I are flying to Los Angeles and then driving from LA to Cincinnati/Virginia. LET'S HANG OUT. Ideally, we'd like to spend a night at someone's place each night so that we can visit with people and not have to spend on a hotel. If you don't want us to sleep on your carpet/couch/garage floor, then come out, talk about keyboards/unicorns/life with us and we'll leave you alone when things wind down.

Anyone want to meet us? Wanna hang out? Live between LA and Cincy/VA? Post here and let us know!

Right now here's our time line:

-Info from the OP on 9/21/13: Week of 10/16/13, we'll fly out to LA on Tuesday night or Wednesday. Spend a day or two there, then drive back. If we have more people to see, I think we'll leave earlier. If not, we might spend more time in LA. I am (CPTBadAss) am trying to fly out a bit earlier so I can have an extra day in LA. So I would fly into LA Monday of that week if my plans work out.

- Update 9/26/13: I'll be in LA 10/13 to 10/16. And then we're (Dorkvader and I) driving starting on 10/17. Dorkvader flies into LA on 10/16.

-Update 10/3/13: Ok here's the plan tentatively, all times in EST for now

My plan is to fly in to LA early on 10:16 (like 10AM or so) spend the night, then leave somewhat early the next morning (as 10/16 will be a lengthy day, flight leaves at 5AM eastern!)

People who have said they might want to hang out with us:

- jcrouse, hashbaz, hoffmanmyster, the_beast, MKULTRA, prdlm2009, mashby, Wildcard, aggiejy, TheFlyingRacoon, Melvang, meiosis

People we're definitely seeing:
- demik, mkawa, carter, Halverson, jdcarpe, tjcaustin, Sherryton

Get your name on the list now! I literally got a text an hour ago from Dorkvader so everything is subject to change since he'll be the leader of this roadtrip. Unlike my userID, I'll be his co-pilot and not the captain :(. I will of course write a huge writeup about all our adventures and I'll probably have my KMAC with me. Because baby goes everywhere with me :D. Oh and my Epsilon Theta too.

More details will be posted as dorkvader, myself, and mkawa figure things out.

The second post will be the current "idea" for itinerary, but I figured I'd post a bit here before I made that start.

It's great to see all the people who want us to visit! This is rapidly becoming the First-Ever GH rolling meetup! I might mail some keyboards to California so I'll have more to show people
I'll see about keeping this post updated with a list of what we plan to do and what we'll bring, etc.

I'm originally from NY, I might be going to NYC over Thanksgiving or Christmas break. If the NYC meetup happens, I might make an appearance. Otherwise, I might have an impromptu meetup in NYC at like a ramen place or a restaurant to get food and chill.

I don't hate anyone.

Ok, well, anyone minus maybe 2.  But you aren't part of the two, tfr.

I think if you're stopping in Odessa for the night you should probably plan on at least one more overnight stop in TX, depending on which interstate you want to take to leave Odessa.

Get to see moose and tfr taking I-10 and me and some less loud members (I think there's 1 in Ft Worth and another in Dallas) taking I-20.  Or we meet somewhat in the middle in Austin.

Well, Mission District burritos + hanging with the hash, might lure me to N. cali.  I'm not so sure fast food hamburgers are a big drawing point.  And this place, Babita (http://www.babita-mexicuisine.com/) might just get me to go back to LA.

This cross-country road trip reminds me of the book Travels with Charley, with dorkvader as John Steinbeck, and CPTBadAss as Charley.  It would be better if they had a camper truck, though.  And lots of expensive whiskey stored in the camper (like 'ol Steinbeck had.)

You ever read Blue Highways?  Another great travel book, and the author did not make stuff up, like Steinbeck in Travels with Charley.

ok, i have to make one correction here, when you go to the mission, you get tacos, not this burrito bull****. you go to la taqueria on 25th and mission and you get a carne asada taco w/ everything. if you're hungry you get two of them. I see that everyone wants you to stay south (TX), but if for some reason you wanted to shoot north for a bit to Minneapolis, you could hang out with me.  And probably flynn.  And all the other people around here.  But it is a bit out of the way, so it's your call.

In fact, now that I think about it, this would be super easy.  Just hop on I-35 and take it right into town.  It's only one road, it can't be that far.

Well, you'll have to excuse my East Coast ways, but you see here in beautiful, cosmopolitan NYC we have excellent tacos.  If you come here, I will buy you some goat tacos that will blow your mind.  Literally, your head will be gone.  (and they cost like $2)  But you see, for some reason nobody in this town can make a half-way decent burrito.  There are two guys who moved here from San Fran who make an imitation mission burrito, but it's not the same.  (I think they moved here just to open their mission burrito business, tbh.  And due to the lack of any other competent burrito-competition, they have been able to dominate the market and have expanded to 5 locations already in only 2 years.)  Anyway, a mission burrito is what I really want when I go to SF.  But, I take your point, and I readily admit that on the culinary scale of greatness the burrito is inferior to the taco.  The taco really is the ultimate statement of culinary delight.  So simple, yet so great.  It's like 2,000 years of Mexican cuisine distilled into a masa tortilla and filling.  The burrito, on the other hand, is a bloated, sloppy mess.  The burrito is too big, too loaded with fat, has too many extra ingredients that don't really belong in there, and it makes you f@rt like a sunva-beach.

Well, anyway, this whole trip is going to pass me by so it doesn't really matter.  Maybe CPTBadAss can come to NYC, and we can do a roadtrip westbound out to Cali, like Jack Kerouac and Neil Cassaday in On the Road.  [most kewlest book evar!]  Or if that's too much trouble, I guess we can just head out east to Sag Harbor, NY, and get drunk in front of John Steinbeck's old house. [and eat some taco's?  There's a not too bad taco place/ Mexican grocery store in Sag Harbor that I know.]

I am 8 hours away from Odessa. I don't think my 04 Explorer can drive that far without breaking.  :))

Although, I have no furniture for you to crash on, so if you decided to crash, FLOOR FOR YOU and a really rude awakening when I go to work again.

So my parents are super worried about me driving across the USA by myself, so I'm planning to drag the CPT along with me. Also, to keep me on top of things, I can take frequent breaks by visiting GH'ers! I will plan to see as many as possible, even for a short meeting.

One of my planned routes goes through odessa, so this is a very real possability.

If your course sends you my way, then I humbly suggest...

NASHVEGAS!

Three reasons to stop here:
   1. Visit MechanicalKeyboards.com on the way into town

   2. Crash at my place

   3. I'll cook you dinner

What Up Shoney? (ツ)_/¯
I was almost positive all the planned routes go near nashville, but I'm sure of it now!

---
Now for a very important question: I'm sure I can bring a keyboard or two on the plane with me. Which one(s) should I bring? General Dynamics Alphameric? IBM 4704 metal cased F? A generic cherry?

I'll also be relying on you guys for advice about road travel, etc.

Edit: ok a few things.
1. I have exactly 4 days to do all of this, and that does involve getting up early to take a flight to LA that lands before noon. I fully expect to be able to spend 1/2 a day in LA before starting, leaving 3 days to drive 35 hours or so. Is this feasible? I hope so, 'cause that's all the leave I have from work.

2. I live like 5 hours from the CPT, visiting Indiana is like a weekend trip for me. I can probably stop by NY when I visit my family for Christmas, so I can see you guys then.

3. Here is a possible trip I can take across the country.
https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Los+Angeles,+California&daddr=Odessa,+TX+to:Nashville,+TN+to:Cincinnati,+OH+to:Roanoke,+VA

4. if I visit halverson (provided he's willing to drive an hour or so south)
https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Los+Angeles,+California&daddr=las+vegas+to:odessa+tx+to:Nashville,+TN+to:Cincinnati,+OH+to:roanoke,+va

Not sure if we could swing going up north but I'll add you to the list.

If not, no worries.  But I definitely vote that you do swing going up north.   :p

If I recall correctly, they had a "jalopy" and more people, that and they took time to bury rose-of-sharon (rosasharn), etc.

This is a legitimate concern. Maybe I'll just smack him for every topic jump :p

Right now, all our proposed routes take us through Memphis, though I don't know if we'll have time to stop for food, as we will likely continue to Nashville

---
Very important  to consider: we can probably stop at most places for a few minutes, but we might not have enough stomach room to take advantage of excellent food to be had. I will plan to min/max as best I can to account for this possibility.

Again, I'm honored that so many people want to meet up. I am sure it's CPTbadass that everyone wants to see. I don't blame you, I want to see him, too.

Those two words don't really make any difference, per se. They were likely placed in the lyrics of the song to increase the length of the bar and help the flow and rhyming. But, in this case, we all knew what he meant, and the difference is null.

It's more what is along the route we are going on (or not more than XX minutes out of the way, whatever is in reason or deemed worthwhile to go out of way for in some special cases) that we can stop at and have a laugh during a rest from driving. That's mostly what I like it for. Though I did once use it to do an entire vacation more or less, nothing but going to see zany crap. Good times.

Right now, I'm looking up times between places, odessa is 15 hours from LA, and tennessee is 15 hours from there, so we could, in theory, just drive to odessa the first day, sleep there, and hang out for part of the morning. I don't think driving from odessa to tennessee is a good idea to do in one day, so we'll have to look for a place to stop on the way.

Then, if I can get Sunday off, I should be able to drive to TN and either spend the night there or in Cincinnati, and make a leisurely drive home on Sunday.

Still a very rough sketch, but it looks like we'll probably be either getting into odessa very late to meet up early the next day, or we'll find someplace to stop between LA and odessa and then get into odessa early-mid the next day. Know any good breakfast places near there?

It's more what is along the route we are going on (or not more than XX minutes out of the way, whatever is in reason or deemed worthwhile to go out of way for in some special cases) that we can stop at and have a laugh during a rest from driving. That's mostly what I like it for. Though I did once use it to do an entire vacation more or less, nothing but going to see zany crap. Good times.

I plan to take frequent breaks (that are short if necessary) and your tool still sounds great for that.

That site will be helpful for me. Check out a bunch of stuff when I'm done with work for the day.

I wonder if there is a site similar that shows parks and nature-related things. Those are my favorite things to see when traveling.

I'm sure Halverson would let us stay at his home in Nevada if we did decide to stop.

I'm quite the veteran of cross country trips, I'm all too familiar with the constraints and wants/needs/desires. Tough scheduling for certain. I've almost always overbooked, and sometimes didn't make it all, but have NEVER regretted "doing too much". It's always been more rewarding than playing conservative. But that's just me. Just consider how overall difficult it is to take meandering trips, regarding the time and money expense. You might as well get as much in as possible, even at the expense of the slightly more extended quality time. My reasoning: Usually the point is to see and experience and meet as much as possible so you grow and can make more informed decisions for the future. <are you getting the not-so-subtle-nudge?>

I see you managed to see through my so covertly delivered message. Good. I figured you're too busy chasing hookers and cocaine to notice.

SF bay is a premier area for many, many reasons. That's why I came here from San Diego. At some point, if at all possible it would really be an important "hit on your list". Ya gotta see it, really you do. I strongly recommend this to everyone. You'll love it or hate it...very polarizing. Isn't' that what life experiences should do? LOL And, there are a couple GH'ers that are relocating here from socal...just some additional info. Not to mention there are quite a few GH'ers here.

Enough selling on my part, you guys have a great trip planned regardless, and that's what life is all about. Experiencing and sharing. Very cool.

(A couple years ago, someone was trying to make a map with pins, when you scrolled over the pins, it would have the name of the GH'er that was in that area...dunno whatever happened to that idea. It seemed fun.)

Worldwide tour? I've been thinking of visiting Europe and my boy Tipo33 in Italy. And HK next year maybe I can visit someone like Shadovved. Oh and I need to make a return to the motherland (East Coast forever <3, 518 represent!) So I might do that.

Nothing beats Curry House CoCo, I swear.  The locations in LA are a little different.  They are just called Curry House, but it's not the same store.  It tastes almost the same, but I prefer Curry House CoCo hands down.

Edit: Wait, I am wrong.  The Curry House I go to is this one http://www.curryhouse-usa.com/default.aspx.  It's pretty similar.  I have to try the Curry House CoCo on the mainland.

It is easy to make, but it doesnt taste the same...  I'm not sure why.  They add just a little thing extra at the restaurant that makes it taste better.

For Korean BBQ,  I recommend Hae Jang Chon.  The price is kind of high, but they make some kimchi fried rice for you at the end.  For high class KBBQ, go to Kang hodong.  The problem with this place is it's not All You Can Eat.

If you are on a budget somewhat, then go to Castle II.  It is $9.99 All You Can Eat.  Their salad is great...

OK kids, OP is update to show our time line. Also its here:

-Update 10/3/13: Ok here's the plan tentatively, all times in EST for now
  • 10/13/13 Sunday - 10/15/13 Tuesday: I fly into LA on Sunday and hang out with some LA kids
  • 10/16/13 Wednesday: Dorkvader arrives, we do car things and then hang out.
  • 10/17/13 Thursday - We leave from LA around 8 am and drive to Las Cruses, New Mexico. Looking like a 12 hour drive. We won't be stopping to visit anyone since there's no one on the way.
  • 10/18/13 Friday - We're stopping in Odessa, TX to meet with JD for lunch (Noon-ish). Then staying in a hotel in Dallas for the night. We'll be shooting for an arrival time in Dallas at 6 pm. We'll be spending the night there and we have all evening so this is probably the best place for a proper meetup.
  • 10/19/13 Saturday - Leaving Dallas at 8 am at the earliest and then driving to Nashville to have dinner with Mashby. Aiming to get into Nashville around 6 pm and leaving around 8 pm to arrive in Cincinnati by midnight.

Mashby and JD, are we still ok with hanging out? Unfortunately, we won't be spending the night at JDs :(

Sounds good but you have to promise that if you are ever want to crash at my place you can't do it unless it has been below freezing for at least a month so I can feed you some real smoked meats and cheese.  Also you have to wait until I finish the Brushed Behemoth.  I'm not sure if the wife will let me mail a 25 pound stainless steel keyboard with return shipping paid just for you to try out.

Lotta good shizz going on in this thread, what a great trip thread!
My schedule has intensified and improved (which is a very good thing), so I'm not a contender at any point to zip down to LA. It's only a 1 hour flight/6 hour drive, but my near future career meetings are happening Monday and again later in the week.

Who is soft again?

Otherwise, you can follow my adventures here. If I remember, I'll try and post Twitter style updates here. And I'll do a writeup like always when I come back with lots of pictures!

Was this at All Electronics?

So Day 1 in LA was great :D. Check it out:

Learned how to lube switches and I lubed my Epsilon.

Had Thai food with Demik and mkawa.

We went to Edsyn after lunch. It's in LA and that's where they make all the Edsyn stuff like Soldapults and sell their wares. I finally got my hands on *nice* hand tools: a flush cutter and two sets of pliers from their Larson tool line :D. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures at Edsyn.

Then we went to this electronic parts store called All Electronics where they sold all these crazy electronics parts. I bought hook up wire, some housings for my Teensys, a headphone adapter and extension cable, and some rubber bumpons. And they had this AMAZING Mexican ISO keyboard :P

Went to Fry's next. Here's some of their finer keyboards. Seriously though? That Crayola keyboard was sweeeet. I got some good flux, contact cleaner, a Pelican case for my camera, a tool storage thing, and some Velcro ties.

And finally, I HAD IN N OUT FOR THE FIRST TIME!! It was really good. I wasn't sure what to expect since I heard conflicting things but I really enjoyed it. I like it way better than Five Guys. And it was half the price! It's a double-double with fries. I just wanted to try it simple and not like Animal Style or anything so I'd know what it's like. Good stuff :D.

Demik is a cool dude. And he gifted me a Lamy Safari and a ton of ink! Thanks <3 :D.

Hibachi, burgers, and something else was discussed by me and TJ. We'll see what happens though.

Yes, Im actually sad I didn't get Animal Style fries.

I said I was printing something last night? Check out the pictures. Edsyn has a solder spool and Soldapult holder? Ming and I printed a custom insert for the holder so it's easier to spin and holds less than the 1lb solder spool it was designed for. Yes, I broke my rule and did CAD outside of work. Damn you Mkawa...

$6 / bag I believe (in LA area).  You better stock up on those because I was able to finish 1 bag for a 4-5 hour road trip.  Since your road trip is like a few days, you'll need around 10 bags.

I had a box of green tea kit kats at home and I'm not *that* into sweets. I'll probably gift DorkVader the majority of Kit Kats if he likes them. And it was $6/bag.

Hm...well I tried uploading pictures but I was using my Olympus EPL3 today to shoot. And apparently, my Chromebook doesn't like even like the opening pictures. I tried uploading to imgur but it got insanely hot. I'll upload more pictures later.

What did I do today?

- Tried a new food called sangak. It's a Iranian/Persian flat bread that comes in a huge serving. For $4, I literally got this flag of flat bread; 2 ft by like 5 ft. It was studded with sesame seeds and so it was nutty, crunchy, and chewy.

- Bought some camera accessories

- Met Sheraton, owner of Originativeco.com.

- Introduced demik to homestyle Japanese food. We had oyakodon, chicken wings, lotus root, tofu, soba, and other delicious Japanese food for dinner.

- Played keyboards! I tried the SSKR finally as well as a KMAC2 Sherry brought. And Sherry also brought his GMK Dolch along with BSP PBT keycaps. I loved both of them. So much for giving up PBT...I'm on the hunt for BSP PBT now.

- Played a lot more with the 3D printer. Mkawa will be selling solder spools soon!

- Ate Blockheads shaved black sesame ice cream, VolcanoTea matcha green tea boba, and some of those Japanese snacks.

- Laughed hysterically as we bombed around at ludicrious speeds in mkawa's Fiat 500. That thing is a monster. As demik and Sherry, it's NO JOKE.

I LOVE THAT PLACE!!  have you learned the secret menu?

4.5 is a hell of a good time, if you look at your list, few Ferrari beat it, and the ones that beat it are super cars worth 200k+++

I tried a "car" that could do 0-100 in around 4 sec, but it was like a big kart with a motorcycle engine that was built for a university competition (SAE formula or something like that). The feeling was impressive.

So if his car can do it in 4.5 sec, man 2 thumbs up to him!

Breakfast of champions: cha siu tsukemen from Tsujita Ramen. It's a tonkatsu style ramen but instead of having the noodles in soup, it's on the side like soba. And there's Chinese style roasted pork belly on top. You dip the noodles into the soup. It was incredible.

As above: we just got in. only time for showers and sleep. I'm uploading pictures now.

First day in LA was exciting. Talked to a wise sysadmin for the LA sheriff on the plane. Agonized over license plats in checked baggage (mine came out last I swear....) rode with kawa in the fiat.

I was at a costco. I have never been in a store that huge. It was daunting. Found some battery and oil (on sale!) and left (battery guy was all like :nsx was it? I was like: I wish )

Ming thinks we can fit the entirety of my hometown into the costco. I am skeptical, as old greta's oxen don't like buildings, so I doubt they'd comply.

Saw that car! !!! so pretty! (so dirty.)

installed oil tank plug, wiper blades, belt. I totally could'a got the belt on by myself, but will admit that it was easier with help. checked out car. washed it.

kawa learns me up good on how to drive. Spend an enjoyable hour or two in the parkinglot practising.

sherryton and demik arrive. Not as I picture them, very enjoyable company. Details and pictures of our night on the down to follow (later)

Here is the car we are driving in:
caption: !!!

Here's some delicious Korean food.
caption: OMG so tasty!

breakfast today: just a piece: delicious raspberry treat. mmmm. I also had some cheese thing and some truly excellent quiche.
caption: this is the raspberry thing. credit partially to the CPT for holding it for me in the light.

To do list:
shower
sleep
everything

dorkvader really liked it. I'll post better pictures of his collection when I'm home. Wish I got more pictures of our time with TJ. We played with a ton of headphones:

- Mr Speakers Mad Dogs
- Hifiman HE500s
- AKG K550s
- Audeze LCD - 2s
- Sennheiser HD600s
- Fostex T50

I've got the HD600s and Hifiman's along with the Magni/Modi stack. We're in Arkansas, on our wau to mashby's for dinner.

I'm genuinely curious whether you felt the Nixdorf love.

They felt like everything Vintage Blacks are supposed to feel like when I read descriptions. Frankly, I wasn't *too* impressed with Vintage Blacks and feel that I wouldn't bother too much to hunt some down. If I could get some Vintage Blacks? Great. If not? Oh well. But Nixdorf Blacks feels remarkably different from modern Blacks. The resistance at the top feels lighter and the whole travel feels smoother overall. Too bad they're still linear switches and inferior to say MX Greens :P. They were nice, I enjoyed them. I wouldn't go ape **** over them since I could easily just lube modern Blacks and enjoy a similar experience but they were definitely great. The clear Cherry tops and Linear White were super cool though.

Sounds like it was fun and your lives are better for it.

Yea, on paper. But my week was nutzoid. Meeting to possibly re-join old partnership consulting group, negotiating a possible new job, out of town 4 days...

I'd rather live the good life, buy a sweet ride from Kawa, visit über-cool buddies in Nor Cal, and take a bi-coastal cruise.

Oh wait, that's you guys.

cptbadass is a chump. I don't have your number or I would have called for sure.

I bought a kendama last night. ozora natural wood so It's not competition approved, but whatever.

The RSX video is great 'cause I was doing really well next to the bench, but when CPTbadass came out with the camera, I wasn't as good, still, you can see the improvements. If only he got a video of me spiking it. I think I outrank him because I can do it more reliably.

nixdorf love? yes indeed! I really liked the vintage linear clear on the spacebar. We compared cherry and aftermarket clear switch tops as well.

I've been sleeping heavily these last few days and will probably get 'round to uploading pictures real soon now.

Ok the picture are finally all uploaded. I took a lot...a lot. If you wanna see them raw (i.e no context) you can check them out on my Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/cptbadass/).

I will post the other really important part of my trip though: The food porn. Yes, I'm a huge foodie.

So the first day (Monday 10/14), we had thai food and In N Out (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=48816.msg1077316#msg1077316). Day two (Tuesday 10/15)? We step up the eating game. I try sangak for brunch, Blockheads Ice cream for afternon snack, and home style Japanese food for dinner! And? Sheraton snipes the dinner bill with the most baller of moves. Apparently he's got an Originative business credit card? Yeah, truly #legitballin. Check this out:

This incredible oven makes...

This Iranian flat bread called sangak! It's like naan but way chewier and sprinkled with sesame seeds. Me and Ming ate SO MUCH of it.

If you know me, you know I love ice cream. Ming takes me to this place called Blockheads where they do snowcream. So its like shaved Hawaiian ice but instead of ice, they freeze blocks of ice cream. It had this crazy creamy but light texture and the ice cream flavors were so Asian.

And mother****in' boba! I got matcha green milk tea with boba.

Wednesday (10/16), I find myself alone for a few hours as Ming drives dorkvader from the airport to the car. That's ok! I find real ramen (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=48816.msg1079377#msg1079377) to eat :D. It also had the best condiment dispenser I've ever seen:

LOL. It sprinkled sesame seeds

But dinner was...KOREAN BARBEQUE. I'm a bit tired so the names of the dishes are eluding me at the moment but here we go:

Thursday morning we went to a cafe in LA before we start driving. Ming got a cheese pastry and this raspberry pastry thing. I got an apple strudel and a ham on baguette sandwich. Dorkvader got this amazing quiche.

Next time we eat well was Friday. Jdcarpe took us to this Tex-Mex place and I got Beef Tongue tacos. Holy **** those were good. And we had hibachi for dinner. I had steak and so did tjcaustin. Dorkvader got scallops. Good food, ****ty service. :(

Last meal we had that was amazing was Saturday (no counting Chick Fil A, my favorite fast food) when we had this feast at mashby's:

Part One

To preface this whole thing, I like to eat a lot and already uploaded my food pictures. They’re unorganized in my flickr album (http://www.flickr.com/photos/cptbadass/sets/72157636920103376/) and explained here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=48816.msg1089650#msg1089650).

So we know about my Sunday (10/13/13) and Monday (10/14/13). If you don’t check out these posts from Sunday:

And then on Monday, I did this (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=48816.msg1077316#msg1077316).

Tuesday (10/15/13) we got up and played with mkawa’s  3D printer again. A little summary of my day can be found here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=48816.msg1078737#msg1078737). I had a blast designing and printing stuff. Mkawa and I were working on a soldering spool to hold about three ounces of solder:

Had some breakfast after that and Ming introduced me to sangak! Talk about it a bit here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=48816.msg1089650#msg1089650) and headed over to a camera store so I could score some goodies for my new camera.  Kinda messed around after and ended up at the local Japanese grocery store. They had a few green tea KitKats:

Part Two

…and she comes to check out what’s going on and says, “I’ve never seen this many people in this room. Awww, Mkawa has friends!” And the only reason I tell this story is to get back at Ming for introducing us to the Edsyn people as his “nerd cadre from his nerd army”. :P

So at this point I’ve hung out with demik and Sherryton for a while and they’re cool dudes. Everyone is super chill and fun to chat with. Plus I’m always really into anyone who can feed me good food haha. Demik and I were bonding hard over Wu Tang and hip hop. Sherry and I were bonding over food and just cracking jokes all the time. He’s so dead pan and delivered all his jokes with a straight face.  Good times. And Ming? Ming is just the same way he is on the forums that he is in real life. He’s super energetic, pours out information all the time, and gets really excited over things (Which is awesome!).  Plus he drives the most absurd Fiat 500 ever. It’s seriously louder than a Harley and Ming’s driving is insane. He flutters the gas pedal and since his turbo is crazy, you can hear the PSSHHTT all the time. It goes 0-60 MPH in 4.5 seconds and Ming drives so crazy, we joked we wanted disposable pants and shirts that say “I survived the Fiat 500”. Ladyfriend straight up told me that she refused to drive anywhere with him.

Anyways, Wednesday morning, Dorkvader comes into town. But since the little Abarth can’t fit everyone, Ming drops me off and I wander the neighborhood he lives near in West Los Angeles. Of course it being me, I wind up eating some amazing tsukemen style ramen (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=48816.msg1079377#msg1079377). I was *very* happy that morning  :D. After I just did my own thing for a while until I got picked up a couple hours later.  My own thing meant walking off a food coma, looking at plushies, and buying drinks/snacks at the market. #YOLO

Eventually Sir Kawa picks me up again and we head over to where the car is. I then meet Dorkvader for the first time in person. And of course we get cracking on fixing up our ride for the next few days:

Dorkvader brought my SSK back to me! :D

Got my hands dirty helping to fix up the RSX: helped with an oil change, swapped in a new timing belt, and helped torque some bolts. I was semi-useful and didn’t get in the way. I call that mission accomplished!

I had a good time hanging out with Dorkvader and mkawa that day. We just worked on some cars, shot the ****, and relearned how to drive a manual. Mkawa gave Dorkvader some pointers and Dork just went forward and back in the little parking lot for a few hours. And then Dorkvader sat me down and we drove around this mental health ward parking lot and mkawa’s driveway. I’m sure the employees were wondering if we belonged inside instead of doing laps at 5 mph outside. Also I was pro at stalling the car. Just saying that I think I have a special talent at stalling a vehicle.

We met up with the rest of the LA crew around 4 pm and Dorkvader got to meet Sherry and demik. And of course, there were a couple more keyboards. Sherryton brought a G80-5000 and HHKB to keep my SSK company!

We hung out for a little while and we headed out to get some Korean barbeque. On the way, we bumped Wu Tang and Snoop Dogg when I found out we were going to drive near Slauson Ave. I’m so cool :D. And mkawa told us an amazing story where he drove into South Central LA to try and get “bean cakes” from a member of the Nation of Islam. Apparently he had gone into the hood to try and get snacks and was snubbed since he’s Asian hahaha.

If you wanna see the Korean BBQ pictures, check out the pictures here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=48816.msg1089650#msg1089650). The crew was kind enough to let me be super Asian and take pictures of all the food before devouring it. Restaurant was Chosun Galbi and was *super efficient*. I just remember the waitresses bringing out all the banchan, filling the table with food, and demik just going WTF, WHAT’S GOING ON. We were all like dude, shut up and eat :D. I think it was DorkVader’s first time eating KBBQ as well and I think he was really enjoying it. I know I ate a metric ton of food that night. And then demik kidnapped us to go to Blockheads for more ice cream :D.

We hung out for a few hours and then I bid a tearful goodbye to the LA crew:

Part Three

I taught Dorkvader how to play kendama. And I freaked out as I learned how to drive a manual in Phoenix rush hour traffic. Trial by fire baby. Me freaking out for 45 minutes, revving the engine while wondering why I couldn’t be in first gear while going 30 MPH. It was probably the worst 45 minutes of the trip and I made DorkVader feel a bit awkward. Sorry dude, thanks for sticking it out with me as I lost my calm for a little while.

I think we were just totally wiped that day. We traded driving and ate some food…for a long time. I don’t know about Dorkvader, but I was really excited just to get to Friday since we were going to stop at jdcarpe’s home and see tjcaustin. That being said, DorkVader and I had some good conversations and he’s a fun guy to chill with.

Friday is more of the same, we drive a lot But Friday is way cooler because actually stop to see jdcarpe in Odessa and tjcaustin in Dallas. Coolest part about west Texas though? There’s the most ridiculous speed limit I’ve ever seen! 80 MPH. So DV was cruising at like 90 MPH with no worries  :D. For lunch, we stop at a restaurant close to JD’s homestead. It was Tex Mex and I had these AMAZING beef tongue tacos. JD is everything I thought he would be, just a super friendly dude who likes keyboards and GeekHack. He even showed up in his GeekHack shirt! I got to give him a birthday present too yay! We head back to his home to check out his keyboards…and it’s just absurd. We’re in his garage, looking at his “junk stuff”:

Sorry mkawa and dorkvader!  Tj, myself, and Dorkvader had a pleasant hibachi dinner and then we played headphones hehe.

Part Four

At this point we’re pretty wiped. This was a haul but Saturday was the day of truth. We were to start in Dallas and end up in Cincinnati OH/Blacksburg VA. We start driving, get lunch at Chick Fil A somewhere in Arkansas and just watched the odometer roll by. We had good tunes, good talks, and plenty of snacks so the drive wasn’t unbearable, just getting old. Mashby’s house was definitely a good thing to look forward too. Too bad I’m bad at directions and made mashby panic since I can’t read road signs and tell him where we’re at :P. We show up the mashby’s house and he’s just scrambling to get dinner ready haha. Mashby and Hashby greet us at the door and welcome us into their home. Mashby had the spread ready to meet us:

These are great people to just spend an evening with. Super nice, hilarious, and they fed me ice cream! <3 They even offered to house us for the night but we were determined to head to Cincinnati. Think we rolled in around 3 AM EST on Sunday 10/20/13. We were so beat and Dorkvader is crazy. We chilled for an hour, I passed out, then DV drove to work and arrived around 11 AM.

This trip was very whirlwind but I’m so happy I got to do it. I got to meet a lot of amazing GeekHackers and online friends, eat tons of good food, play keyboards, and just go on what might be a once in a lifetime adventure. Plus dorkvader is a really cool dude. Everyone should talk to him more hehe.

Sorry for the spam and all, the pictures were annihilating the posts so I had to reserve four posts so I could fit the whole writeup. Please enjoy and let me know what you guys think!

Wow! Looks like a ton of fun. I have no idea why I thought JD was a 17 year old boy though. He's obviously not.

I'm looking forward to the pending NYC meet.

Hehe, it's always fun to see how people in real life match up to your perception of them ^__^.

I may be in NYC around Christmas time. Maybe we could do a mini-meet. Just get food somewhere.

I just wanna show off my keyboards to people who actually understand why I spend so much money on them

Hear me out!

I got an e-mail from a customer 2 days ago.  He wanted to purchase some items, and he wanted to pick up locally.  I typed up a response, and I was about to hit reply.  I looked at the person's e-mail, and I saw that his name sounded real familiar.  I looked him up, and I realized I went to middle school with this guy.  He is 2 years older than me.  I told my friend, and he contacted his brother (same class as each other).  The guy adds me on facebook, and I educate him on KEYBOARD 1 (Keyboard 101 being for noobs).

It was satisfying teaching someone I knew about keyboards!  None of my friends like mechanical keyboards :(

That was an excellent write up with a lot of really great pictures.
I am filled with great envy and a lot of hunger now. I'll just have to eat my sorrows I guess =p.

Well done, and hope I get to do something similar one day :D

Epic journey. I wish I could travel the states. Well actually, pretty much all the A's; America, Australia and Asia.
