Title: do_Og@n Painted Keycaps
Post by: do_Og@n on Sat, 21 September 2013, 14:29:12
I've been playing around with painting and decided I might as well paint some keycaps. I've done some work for other people to get more practice and I've started to turn out some pretty cool results.

I'm going to sell some eventually but this thread will be dedicated to just the keycaps and any ideas people throw at me.

And now for some pictures!!!  :p  I will post them in order of completion and only the ones I haven't sold or given away.

THE NERV ONE  (sorry I just HAD to post)

Splat one looks the best, and that icy blue one. ^_^

Updated with some more keycaps. One of them is for a fellow GeekHacker.

The purple swirl cap also has Glow in the dark paint over the darker purple which looks pretty cool.

All suggestions will be taken. I'm up for a challenge, and if I do decide to sell the keycap the person who made the suggestion will have dibs on the keycap(s).

I am going to be painting a Model M keycap tonight. I want to test this method out on as many different types of keycaps as I can before I decide to sell them.

Mainly I want to make sure they will last and not wear off in the first year. I will be buying a Topre keycap from Elitekeyboards.com unless someone out there would like to borrow me one, let me paint it, and send it back?

Keep in mind if someone wants to do this I will be sanding and then painting they keycap. There will be no turning back. I will however paint whatever the person wants on it as long as it fits within my skills.

Unfortunately that one is already shipped out. I painted that one for a Geekhacker. I'm going to do some serious durability testing here soon. I want to make sure these caps will last a good amount of abuse before I decide to sell them.

I'll be making a wasd set here soon and start cranking in some more hours on L4D2. I'll be sure to post pictures.

Yeah, I put 2 layers after the paint underneath has had some time to harden. You have to let the lacquer sit for about 3 days before it starts to harden. After that it feels almost bullet proof.

Agreed.  However, at first I read that as "the spacebar with the french fry," and now I really want a space bar that looks like a crinkle cut french fry.

Also I'm hungry.

Thanks everybody! That font is actually an Ambigram of Geekhack.

A crinkle cut french fry spacebar sounds like a good idea to me....I'll add that to the list.

Doogan, question for you -- what's your painting setup look like? In my keycap flocking thread (see my sig for the link) I put mine on skids to hold them down and manipulate them. I'm not painting the way you are, I'm really just sanding, and priming, but I'm pretty happy with my setup. How do you manage to keep the caps from moving around?

I don't know if I will be able to describe it very well without photos but here goes.

Step 1 - I sand the keycap first with 600 grit and then finish it by wet sanding with 1500 grit.

Step 2 - I position the keycap on a makeshift dowel so I can keep it from moving or falling over while still keeping it off the ground. Which means I can turn the keycap without having to move the direction I'm spraying.

Step 3 - Once I am done spraying the keycap I take it indoors (so it doesn't catch anything) and set it on a makeshift stand keeping it level.

Step 4 - After coating it a couple of times a let it sit overnight so the paint has time to cure before I hand paint it.

Step 5 - After I spend way to much time hand painting it I let that paint set for a bit. I then layer it with a lacquer spray and let it harden for a couple days. Then it is ready for use.

I can upload pictures later of my makeshift stand and keycap dowel fastening thingy ma bobber. Everything but the actual spray painting is done within my house.

I read through your flocking thread and that looks awesome. Makes me want a purple velvet spacebar. I think you would benefit from being able to paint your keycaps off of a surface so you don't have to cut off the excess flock.

Yeah, let me see the dowel setup you're using. For MX caps I originally used a bamboo skewer with the tip cut down to hold it up in the air! My problem is how to speed up the process so I can do more keycaps in a single run without resorting to the 'air puffing' method of flocking.

The first 'bath mat' I made (see the beginning of the thread) it was a problem mainly because the flock undercoat was not adhering well enough -- so when I pulled the first few keycaps away from the mat -- some of the flocking stayed on the mat. After that I cut them loose from the flocked bathmat I created with an X-Acto knife.

Once I got the primer to work better and the adhesive to actually hold (and masked the bottoms properly) then excess flock wasn't a problem anymore. Sometimes there's a little excess, but a sharp scissor takes it right off.

I will gladly trade you a velvety magenta suede buckling spring spacebar for a spiral keycap!

I guess I do still have my SSK left. Haven't used it in a while but I'm planning on painting a RGB Spiral cap for it.

Updated with some extra caps and sets I've painted. Still not finished with a set of 16 that will cover the entire top row. May take some time but they are turning out really well.

I think it's time to start selling caps but I'm looking for a good name for the swirl caps. Here are some of my ideas:

1- lollicap
2- Swurllicap
3- hypnocap

Couldn't use Vortex......we all know why. Feel free to throw out some ideas.

I will be in the future but right now I'm working on a big project.

I've decided to name the keycaps with swirls..... HyPnoCaPs

First I want to thank Krogenar for helping me make up my mind on the name.

I'll be starting a sale thread here soon where I will offer up custom HyPnoCaPs and do 5 a week for the lucky 5 people who decide to jump on board.

Sale Parameters:

1- You choose the two colors you want.
        *Any color...if I don't have it I'll go buy it. (I'm not going to do three because the brightest color will distract from the other two)

2- You choose the keycap type you want.
        * Cherry Profile R4
        * OEM Profile R4
        * Tall Spherical MX caps
        * Topre
        * ALPS R4
        * IBM Model M

3- Once you buy this cap you will swear by it.
        * No selling it for a ridiculous profit!
        * You can however give it away.

As a side note I am not comparing my work to Clacks or the amazing work of the great and powerful Binge. I simply have fun painting and enjoy seeing the keycaps I paint on my fellow GeekHacker's keyboards.

I also want to thank you all for your kind words and ideas. I excited to see what I can produce in the future!

@ dragonxx21 - Price will be $10 plus shipping. This will include a repaint warranty. If it wears off, I repaint it and you just pay for shipping.

@ tormentor - I will be taking requests after I finish this huge project. This will only be one at a time though. I plan on making WASD, arrow, and function row sets in the future so I don't want a ton of requests stacking up.

I'm not sure what to do about dibs at this point but for the first round it should be okay.

I guess I should make a wiki page or something on my painting process. I don't really do anything special that a lot of other people don't already do. I just hand paint with acrylic paints after sanding and putting on a base coat. After the hand painting I layer it with lacquer.

1- Sand
2- Base coat
3- Hand paint
4- Lacquer

It just takes a lot of time to complete the whole process. In total I spend around 1-2 hours per keycap (depending on how complex the art is).

The Keroppi keycap took nearly 2 hours, the HyPnoCaPs took about 2 hours, but keycaps like the Brick one only took about an hour.

You do have to spend a decent amount on resources though. I already had some from years ago thankfully.

1. Be specific -- what paints / primers / paintbrushes do you use?
2. Use Photoelectric's writeup on case painting as a template of how to do it well.

Looking forward to getting my cap!

Question for my people?

Should I paint the Jack-O-Lantern set on Cherry Profile, OEM Profile, or Tall Spherical.

I like the tall Spherical because it is Symmetrical but they don't pull off a keyboard easily. I like OEM because they give me more of a painting surface, and most people like Cherry.

You decide!

Your people? What do you mean your people? Joking aside. I'd be interested in Tall Spherical as I've never actually had a cap like that, but most of these custom key caps seem to be cherry profile.

It was a spin off of the "You people, what do you mean you people" comment. No offense meant :P

I have half of the Jack O Lantern set done and ready. I'll be able to finish the other half over the weekend (hopefully by Sunday) so I'll start selling them by Sunday or Monday.

Hope you all like them!

On another note the HyPnoCaPs are going really well so far and I want to thank everybody who has bought some so far and supported the idea. Special shout out to Krogenar for his help on the naming and joining in on the first run.

You would have had competition for them except for the fact that I'm starting to run out of cash and I already have some portal mods

Doogan, received my keycap HyPnoCaP yesterday, and it's awesome. Skillfully done, the topcoat makes it pop -- really, really great work. I'll post a pic later.  :thumb:

I'm still not sure how I should sell them. I want to keep them as a set but for the set it would cost $130.  :eek:

And....I would also like to give everybody a chance to buy one. Any suggestions!!!

from doing this before in the past do not sell as a set... people love choice and making it a set really takes away from their ability to pick and choose how they spend their money.  If someone wants to buy all of them at once... allow it, but I think you'd be doing a service if anyone could buy singles.

Question for you all...I'm thinking about painting the modifiers on my F660C. If I do a solid color it will be Metallic Apple red or should I paint them like the HyPnoCaPs?

I'm thinking about doing them similar to the Windows Key HyPnoCaP. Paint the Shift, tab, enter symbol and branching the HyPnoCaP pattern off of that.

What does everybody think?

hypnocaps look best on spherical caps, so ovalish caps don't look as good

I disagree; full hypnocap mods would be awesome.

I'm sure you already have something in mind, but I wouldn't do ovals like Pacifist suggested, but circles like the rest.

I never suggested ovals. I suggest that he stick with the red cap as doing hypnocap circles would not look so good on a cap that isn't square or circle

They won't be a circle pattern though.

I would paint the up arrow for the shift key and the rest of the swirl will take on same shape.

Kind of like this one.

These are Very good!  They actually look like there are physical threads on those caps, forming the webs.

Little do you know I actually tie a paint brush to a spider bum and leave them in a cup until the keycap is done. ;)

If I can make the paint lines thick enough you can actually feel them when you touch the keycap.
