Very impressive... I should commission a test cap :p
Very nice. I would love to snatch up the phoenix one :thumb:
That spiral!
Plus, the brick one gives me an idea (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=25674.msg1050299#msg1050299).
Updated with some more stuff.
Made a matching spacebar & Escape key combo!!!
I will be starting some Minecraft caps here soon after I finish with a couple of WASD sets.

Did you put a layer of laquer? Might make the caps more durable
i hope you are proud of this work. you should be. my favorite piece is the spacebar with the french like font. nicely done man.
Doogan, question for you -- what's your painting setup look like? In my keycap flocking thread (see my sig for the link) I put mine on skids to hold them down and manipulate them. I'm not painting the way you are, I'm really just sanding, and priming, but I'm pretty happy with my setup. How do you manage to keep the caps from moving around?
I can upload pictures later of my makeshift stand and keycap dowel fastening thingy ma bobber. Everything but the actual spray painting is done within my house.
I read through your flocking thread and that looks awesome. Makes me want a purple velvet spacebar. I think you would benefit from being able to paint your keycaps off of a surface so you don't have to cut off the excess flock.

Yeah, let me see the dowel setup you're using. For MX caps I originally used a bamboo skewer with the tip cut down to hold it up in the air! My problem is how to speed up the process so I can do more keycaps in a single run without resorting to the 'air puffing' method of flocking.QuoteI read through your flocking thread and that looks awesome. The first 'bath mat' I made (see the beginning of the thread) it was a problem mainly because the flock undercoat was not adhering well enough -- so when I pulled the first few keycaps away from the mat -- some of the flocking stayed on the mat. After that I cut them loose from the flocked bathmat I created with an X-Acto knife.
Once I got the primer to work better and the adhesive to actually hold (and masked the bottoms properly) then excess flock wasn't a problem anymore. Sometimes there's a little excess, but a sharp scissor takes it right off.
I will gladly trade you a velvety magenta suede buckling spring spacebar for a spiral keycap!
Just wait till you all see what I've been working on for the past couple days.
I'm making a set of 16 that will take up the entire top row. Still debating on whether I want to keep or sell them though.

Are they a series of little frog caps!? Are they? Okay, probably not; I just want to see a set of 16 of them together :)

Updated with some extra caps and sets I've painted. Still not finished with a set of 16 that will cover the entire top row. May take some time but they are turning out really well.whirpoolcap?
I think it's time to start selling caps but I'm looking for a good name for the swirl caps. Here are some of my ideas:
1- lollicap
2- Swurllicap
3- hypnocap
Couldn't use Vortex......we all know why. Feel free to throw out some ideas.
Or just whirlcap would be alright. I'll add that to the list.Would you be interested in selling custom painted caps? After getting the first one, I think I might want more! :D
Right now I think Hypnocap is my favorite.

I will be in the future but right now I'm working on a big project.
I've decided to name the keycaps with swirls..... HyPnoCaPs
First I want to thank Krogenar for helping me make up my mind on the name.
I'll be starting a sale thread here soon where I will offer up custom HyPnoCaPs and do 5 a week for the lucky 5 people who decide to jump on board.
Sale Parameters:
1- You choose the two colors you want.
*Any color...if I don't have it I'll go buy it. (I'm not going to do three because the brightest color will distract from the other two)
2- You choose the keycap type you want.
* Cherry Profile R4
* OEM Profile R4
* Tall Spherical MX caps
* Topre
* ALPS R4
* IBM Model M
3- Once you buy this cap you will swear by it.
* No selling it for a ridiculous profit!
* You can however give it away.
As a side note I am not comparing my work to Clacks or the amazing work of the great and powerful Binge. I simply have fun painting and enjoy seeing the keycaps I paint on my fellow GeekHacker's keyboards.
I also want to thank you all for your kind words and ideas. I excited to see what I can produce in the future!
I'm not sure what to do about dibs at this point but for the first round it should be okay.
...the great and powerful Binge. ...
Ordered.
:eek: Who was the lucky guy that got the NOD keycap?
One of my coworkers. He put it on his first board and was giddy as a school girl when he first saw it.

I'm going to starting a Jack-O-Lantern set soon. There will be about 12 total and each one will be unique.
I'll update my HyPnoCaPs ad when they are done.
Hey, good work man. Could you explain how do you paint the caps with more details? Like what sort of dye/brush/etc.. do you use, or any other thing to mention. I am so tired of my caps and very little chance to have new colored caps. Thanks,

I guess I should make a wiki page or something on my painting process. I don't really do anything special that a lot of other people don't already do. I just hand paint with acrylic paints after sanding and putting on a base coat. After the hand painting I layer it with lacquer.
1- Sand
2- Base coat
3- Hand paint
4- Lacquer
It just takes a lot of time to complete the whole process. In total I spend around 1-2 hours per keycap (depending on how complex the art is).
The Keroppi keycap took nearly 2 hours, the HyPnoCaPs took about 2 hours, but keycaps like the Brick one only took about an hour.
You do have to spend a decent amount on resources though. I already had some from years ago thankfully.
Question for my people?Your people? What do you mean your people? Joking aside. I'd be interested in Tall Spherical as I've never actually had a cap like that, but most of these custom key caps seem to be cherry profile.
Should I paint the Jack-O-Lantern set on Cherry Profile, OEM Profile, or Tall Spherical.
I like the tall Spherical because it is Symmetrical but they don't pull off a keyboard easily. I like OEM because they give me more of a painting surface, and most people like Cherry.
You decide!
Thanks for your input....and by my people I mean my fellow Geekhackers.It was a spin off of the "You people, what do you mean you people" comment. No offense meant :P
I have half of the Jack O Lantern set done and ready. I'll be able to finish the other half over the weekend (hopefully by Sunday) so I'll start selling them by Sunday or Monday.
Hope you all like them!
On another note the HyPnoCaPs are going really well so far and I want to thank everybody who has bought some so far and supported the idea. Special shout out to Krogenar for his help on the naming and joining in on the first run.

I'm still not sure how I should sell them. I want to keep them as a set but for the set it would cost $130. :eek:
And....I would also like to give everybody a chance to buy one. Any suggestions!!!

from doing this before in the past do not sell as a set... people love choice and making it a set really takes away from their ability to pick and choose how they spend their money. If someone wants to buy all of them at once... allow it, but I think you'd be doing a service if anyone could buy singles.
Is it just me or were a lot of posts removed?

You might be thinking of my HyPnoCaPs Sale Thread. This is the one I started before that one.
hypnocaps look best on spherical caps, so ovalish caps don't look as good

I disagree; full hypnocap mods would be awesome.
I'm sure you already have something in mind, but I wouldn't do ovals like Pacifist suggested, but circles like the rest.

They won't be a circle pattern though.
I would paint the up arrow for the shift key and the rest of the swirl will take on same shape.
Kind of like this one.

These are Very good! They actually look like there are physical threads on those caps, forming the webs.
