Title: Cheap method to de-rice the CM Storm QFR?
Post by: mljs54 on Mon, 23 September 2013, 10:20:05
As title suggests... looking to see if there's a cheap ($10-15) solution to de-ricing the nasty/boygamer (at least IMO) branding/colors of the CM Storm.

Thanks

Because of this contest: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=47471.0
The top cases are only $5 shipped from CM right now.

I am thinking about buying one or two and I don't even own a QFR.

Isn't this more to sell to international sellers? And isn't it at cost?
Might be better off buying from the CM Store.

And if you don't like the keycaps, $20 from EK (http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=special&filter=tampo) - they are about what you'd expect, but acceptable for the money.

FWIW I am using green ones on a QFR to type this.

Got the KB today.  It's great and feels exactly like my 1st Filco TKL.

Yes, the font on the keycaps is horrendous so i definitely plan on replacing them!!!  Is there a cheap solution to remove the print/paint?  I wouldn't mind an all-black stealthy look.  Otherwise I'll just purchase a set from EKB.  Thanks.

To remove the surface of the case or the keycaps?

Don't sand the keycaps - you will wear them down too quickly.  Just replace them.

Although can you sand the case, the results may vary depending on many factors.  CM sell replacement unbranded case tops - that would be the best way to go.

The keycaps.  I got the version with the black nearly unbranded case (there's a small logo on the back which doesn't bother me).  The set from EKB is $30 shipped for me so if I can find a cheap solution to deface the existing ones that would be great.

I think EK sells blanks.

best solution I've seen is someone just taking the case off and leaving it exposed on the desk.  looked uber hacker and much lower profile

If the case is already (mostly) unbranded, then all you need to do is replace keycaps.  If you want blank keycaps, EK has sets for $20 (as well as the printed ones).

Apart from that, see if you can find a cheaper keyboard on eBay and salvage the keycaps from that.

or, as you have now > 60 posts, you can create a WTB thread in Classifieds to see if anyone has a cheap set they want to get rid of.

I ended up ordering a pair of the red keycaps from EKB.  Thanks for the suggestion rowdy.  Hopefully they will look slick with my red Artisan Hien and black Zowie mouse.

Just gotta reiterate that it's a great KB for $70.  Just wish CM would release a stealthy, fully unbranded version as well, or at least use a different font type on the stockkey caps.
