Post by: microsoft windows on Mon, 30 September 2013, 16:05:37
So am I the only geek on here who still uses one?

My phone is a Western Electric 500.

I'VE GOT A BUSY WEEK AT WORK AHEAD OF ME, BUT MAYBE THIS WEEKEND I'LL TAKE A PHOTO OF MY COMPUTERS AND PHONES. I'VE GOT A WESTERN ELECTRIC 500 SITTING RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE MONITOR ON ONE OF MY PC'S. MAKES A GREAT DESK PHONE.

MW is totally serious. I can vouch for the existence of his antique technology. As it is, half the computers in my lab are his...

The two verses merged when it comes to MW.. (http://www.freesmileys.org/emoticons/tuzki-bunnys/tuzki-bunny-emoticon-042.gif)

I recall (correctly (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=11651)) that mr_a500 collects and uses old rotary phones.

In my kitchen I got my trusty old rotary-dial wall-phone from the 1930's. Works great.
So where's the picture? ;)

I have one of those. It still has the cardboard circle with my number from the 1970s.

Utterly awesome phone. Sounds infinitely better than anything today. Works during a power failure, too.

And remember how you used to stand in the hallway near the front door to make or take a phone call, because that is where the phone was?

Clearly you youngsters do not understand that pretty much the entire universe is an analog device.

In particular, sound waves themselves as well as the human ear.

I miss having one of those.  Great sound quality, and having it in one location meant it was easy to ignore or take off the hook.

well.... we don't know that for sure...

If there is a "fundamental" particle, then the universe may be digital.
