Title: Topre vs. Filco
Post by: xyeLz on Sun, 06 October 2013, 17:04:09
I've been seeing a lot about Filco here on the forums (I'm rather new) and I have only ever really owned Topre switches and LOVE the keyboards. Are the Filco keyboards better in some or many ways? Which performs better, feels better, and makes you type faster/better?

In my book, Filco is the queen of all MX boards, only beaten by Korean custom boards.

If Filcos came with PBT caps, they would be perfect.

It's a matter of personal preference. I prefer the weight of Topre switches, but I'm one of those weird people who, after moving from Topre to Filco (Cherry MX brown) prefers the feel of my Cherry MX Filco over Topre. I'm probably closer to the minority :)

Topre and Filco what? Topre variable (35/45/55) feels significantly heavier than either brown or blue Cherry MX. If Topre is too light, then you'd need at least Cherry MX green/clear! If you like the feel of Topre but don't mind something loud, sound like buckling spring is your best bet — still very smooth, but stronger.

No one can really answer that question for you. You'd have to try them out yourself. They feel completely different. Some people like Cherry MX, some like Topre.
To me Topre feels solid, smooth, refined; Cherry MX feels harsh, wobbly, yet fun. Kinda like comparing a 335i to a STi. Both will get you from point a to point b, just in different style/feel.

I started with a Filco TKL and found it underwhelming. After trying and rejecting one Cherry mx board after another, I have finally settled on two very different boards: the HHKB Pro 2 and the IBM Model M SSK. At this time, the only other board I would like to try is the RF 87u with 55-gram Topre switches.
