Title: Plum 96 mx battery mod
Post by: cagbagger on Tue, 08 October 2013, 16:31:44
I am about to get a plum 96 mx board in the mail, and have been reading a lot about battery life of the thing, with little success, so i decided to venture out on my own to mod my own high-capacity battery pack, and install a charging controller (which i also know very little about) for when its plugged in.  It takes 3 aaa batteries, which would be an output voltage of 3.6-4.5ish volts.

For reference on the board

The Case: Parallel wiring

Knowing next to nothing about batteries, and electronics, I have done a fair amount of schooling for myself, and have decided buy some high capacity rechargeable lithium ion batteries run in parallel to keep voltages in check.  My concern is that I have no idea about micro-usb charging controllers, and if they can charge a battery pack like this.

Any suggestions or inputs on how to make this easier, or if i'm going to wtf blowup my battery pack with my suggestions, it would be appreciated!

This would probably fit in better in 'making stuff together' subforum...perhaps a mod could move it.

That would be great!  Sorry I didn't have the foresight for that

Yeah, I think spamray is right, I've moved it to this subforum.

But a really nice mod!

After browsing a lot more threads on this page, I've decided to change the battery pack on this to sparkfun's lipo 2000mah: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/8483

Also, I've been trying to figure out the configuration for all this to work.  All i essentially want is to be able to have a long-lasting rechargeable battery for this keyboard, that can simultaneously charge and operate while plugged in.  It'd be nice to keep the ability of the d+/d- micro usb switches that directly feed to the boards internal controllers, and not just have to rely off bluetooth only.  (i.e. keyboard works without a battery if you just plug it in).

Once I get the board I am going to examine the circuitry, but i'm thinking about running the Vbus terminal of the micro usb socket to run to the charger which will then run to the board.

Does anyone know if this charge controller is capable of simultaneously charging a battery AND providing output power to my keyboard? (https://dlnmh9ip6v2uc.cloudfront.net/images/products/1/0/2/1/7/10217-01_i_ma.jpg)

Seems like this (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11231) would be more in line with what you are looking for.

I've finished modding this keyboard with success!  here's my imgur album with descriptions.

I will post more on here about the battery life of the 1000mah on here later after doing some testing, but am confident that it could go probably at least a week without a charge.
