Title: Blue Alps Tour!
Post by: AKIMbO on Fri, 11 October 2013, 18:16:21
This is the official Blue Alps Tour!

Only members who have 250+ posts and I deem trustworthy are allowed to participate (why...because it's my board and ain't no one gonna run off with it!  :p).  This board uses an AT cable (so I will be including an AT to PS/2 adapter and a PS/2 to USB converter on this tour).

Please review the tour terms (below) and post in this thread to be added to the tour (let me know which state you live in!).

Terms of the tour
-You get one week with the board...then you must mail it (with tracking) to the next individual on the list.
-You must post a review of the board. (Mashby included!!!!)  :p
-Tour is CONUS only.
-I reserve the right to shift around tour participants in order minimize the keyboard's time in-transit.
-Tour will commence October 31

This board is modified Omnikey 101 with complicated blue alps soldered in.  The board will also have simplified white alps soldered into the function row.

Little do you know that after the last tour, AkimbrO made AT F's hard to find. MWAHAHAHA. Akimbo is actually trying to sink the Buckling Spring and Alps market, one tour at a time!

Also, congrats on 2K posts calavera :D

Not interested in the tour (and not eligible, I don't think), but blue alps are awesome, good choice :thumb:

And, on top of that, the build quality of the omnikeys is pretty incredible.

Should be fun for everyone involved!

This is great! I'm seriously considering it.  I wish you had more varieties of Alps in there to try out!  Like "salmon" Alps, Matias Clicky, etc.

Oh yeah, I remember reading reviews :)  I just want to try lots of different Alps varieties, in part because there are SO MANY of them.  I want to get a good idea of how they compare to each other as well to Cherry MX.  Like if I got an Alps-compatible PCB, I would have absolutely no idea what to put into it (not an issue... because it's not going to happen any time soon :D)  Matias Quiet switches seem to be the safest choice from what I've read.

We pay shipping ourselves or can we freeload 2 the max?

My real question is now much shipping the board costs. I'd be down provided we can skip it under $15.

Any method with tracking (you pay shipping).  The board can fit in a USPS flate rate priority game board box....which is roughly $16 to ship & includes tracking.

Ah my bad mashby...I forgot to update the OP.  There are only 2 switch types on that board....complicated blues and simplified whites.  I never got around to soldering in the Matias quiet clicks.

First off, I would like to thank Akimbo for offering his keyboard to us and organizing the tour! Prior to typing on this board, the only other Alps switch I have typed on (that I'm aware of :)) are the white Alps. I'm not a huge fan of White Alps just because my hands would fatigue after typing on them for a substantial amount of time.

When I first opened the box from Binge (ty sir, fine job of packaging), I found that I was not overly excited by the switch actuation. I didn't spend much time typing on the board in the beginning due to the Holiday's, etc.

Over the last week or so, I've been typing on the keyboard almost every day and I have to admit, the switch is really growing on me. As most of you already know, the Alps typically have a high actuation point in the switch. These blue Alps switches are clicky but also have a linear feel. I've really never felt a switch like it before. At first, I thought they would just be similar to Cherry MX Blues (which I do like for typing) but these Blue Alps have a linear feel along with a heavier click than MX Cherry Blues. It's really cool.

I also find that the weight of the switch is almost perfect, its not too heavy and not too light. I'm not sure I would personally enjoy it as a gaming board, but the Blue Alpsies are definitely in my top 3 "typing" switch now. Thanks AkimBR0 :P.

Okay. Back to the grind, and a bit of time to write a review.

So first off, after typing on a HHKB for so long, the fatigue of typing on these Blue Alps was noticeable right away. They're not even that heavy, but my fingers have become adjusted to such a light switch.

I've been trying to figure out a way to describe them by comparison to other switches more common such that people who read it can try to have an idea, but that's very hard to do because these switches are very much in a class of their own.

First, they feel GREAT. I love clicky switches. MX Blues were my first, and what really absorbed me into keyboards was that clicking sound. These switches click, but they're very far from MX Blues. The click sounds more metallic, not plasticy like MX Blues, but not as pingy as Buckling Springs. It's a very nice sound. Much, much nicer than White Alps (XMs?). The feeling is also superior. I've also tried Matias Clickys as individual switches (not in a keyboard), and the clicking is superior to those as well. Unfortunately, that's pretty much the extent of my Alps experience, so not much else to compare them to. The weight, once I adjusted was actually nice. They seem to be heavier than MX Blues to me, which is a very nice plus. I've always thought that MX Blues with a slightly heavier spring would be superior (though in my year+ here, I've still never tried them... :/ ).

The negative, unfortunately, is that they're still Alps. I know a lot of people love these switches, and they do seem to have very many different types of switches with different feels from what I hear, but they've always just felt off to me. The fact that you have to be considerate of how you press them because pressing them at an angle causes the press to feel off puts me off of them.

But, as much as Alps aren't for me, I still keep one Alps board for my own historical reasons, and with everything being said, where I was planning on swapping in Matias Clicky switches to it, I'm actually considering trying to acquire a board with these switches to put into it instead. If you're a person who enjoys clicky switches with a little weight on them as much as me, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with these.

I'd like to finish off by thanking AKIMbO for making this happen. It's always nice for a community member to be willing to help out the community to grow and gain new experiences. I truly appreciate it.

I truly appreciate it.

nice review.............

It'll still be a bit before you have to ship the board. Maybe things will be better by then, and if not I'll cover shipping for you. :)

You are saving yourself quite a bit of money. The shipping fee, and the price of the blue Alps keyboard you would have had to buy.

According to the pictures in this thread (http://deskthority.net/photos-videos-f8/philips-pm-3655-logic-analyzer-keyboard-t4927.html), the FK-767 has Cyan Omron (http://deskthority.net/wiki/Omron_keyswitch) switches. So it looks like the 767 was just a more compact version of the 747, putting the function keys above the keyboard instead, as I see yours has the same awkward positioning of the ESCape and Caps Lock keys.

Alright here on my thoughts of the Northgate Omnikey 101 with Blue Alps.  I have taken many clicky and non-clicky Alps for a ride over the past couple years.  With full confidence, I can attest that the Blue Alps on this particular keyboard have provided the most enjoyable Alps experience for me so far.  It was a clickity-smooth ride into magical Alps fantasy land.

First of all, I was very impressed with the quality of the keyboard.  This keyboard had a solid metal bottom, thick and firm legs, and a thick plastic top.  Unlike most keyboards manufacturers, Northgate had durability in mind when they made this keyboard.  The Omnikey also had this cool little door in the upper left corner that gave access to the DIP switches.  I had idea what these DIP switches do, but one of the guides linked in CPTBadAss's review of the keyboard probably could help you out if you are that curious.  http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=54201.0

Most Alps switches take more force to actuate than a Cherry Brown or Blue switch, and I have always preferred the Alps switches on the lighter end of the spectrum, such as Orange Alps and the white and blue SMK switches (aka Monterey Blue).  All of the clicky Alps I have tried, including Black Alps, White Alps, and the more recent Matias clicky switch, are noticeably heavy and can get tiring during a long session.  The Blue Alps, on the other hand, can be pushed, poked, prodded, and pounded for a lengthy period without the same fatigue I expect from other clicky Alps sessions.

The click in the Blue Alps also takes on a different feeling than other Alps clicky switches.  Next to me as I type this is the Matias Mini Tactile Pro, along with the few White Alps switches Akimbo left in the Omnikey 101.  This might sound ridiculous, but the Blue Alps click seems to resonate more and produce a higher pitch than the other clicky switches.  The click in most Alps switches sounds subdued to me compared to Cherry Blue and buckling spring, but these Blue Alps let their click be known.  I love it.

If I could compared the Blue Alps to any other switch, it would be the Monterey Blue.  Both are light, clicky, and pleasantly tactile compared to other Alps-mount switches.  In the end, I give the Blue Alps the edge because they have a sturdier feeling than the Monterey Blue, which is my only complaint about that particular switch.  Blue Alps are in a class of their own.

Overall, I feel like I can glide over the keys while typing with this keyboard, which in a rare feeling for me, but the desired feeling.  When I push its buttons, the keyboard pushes mine back.  And boy, does it feel good.

I just did a successful bolt-mod on a 1390131 that is about as good as it gets with a Model M.

It was interesting and different, and I certainly appreciate that the Model M is "the one true keyboard" that brings together all the elements that make the modern keyboard what we know it as today.

But the Model F is still a very large cut above as far as awesomeness and feel are concerned.

Monterey Blue Alps (http://deskthority.net/wiki/SMK_Alps_mount)
Blue Alps (http://deskthority.net/wiki/Alps_SKCM_Blue)

We're just using colloquial names for the switches.

Can anyone speak to the differences between Monterey blue and blue alps types?

SMK Monterey Blue Alps aren't as smooth and are much lighter. They also don't have the same bump that the SKCM Complicated Blue Alps have.

Time to crow about a project that has been simmering in my mind for 2 years, and is finally complete.

Although I was not a part of this tour, I have built pretty much the same keyboard, with help and advice from Akimbo along the way.

For me, the hardest part was getting the switches, and it took about a year and a half of ebay-ing before I got my hands on some, initially thanks to Akimbo (you can never thank this great guy enough).

Then I had to procure a recipient for my donor. First I put some into a Dell AT101, a very well-built, straight-ANSI board that I have used and loved, off and on, for many years. But although it felt great, it just did not ring my bell on every level (cough* aesthetics *cough).

Eventually, I found a Northgate Omnikey 101 and that did the trick. This magnificent keyboard is constructed on a par with my beloved IBM Model Fs, which cannot be said for any other conventional keyboard, in my experience.

So I cleaned it up thoroughly, sanded away the rust spots, painted the steel plate green (my trademark, since my name is Moss what else can I do?), transplanted the blue Alps (and used the less desirable whites for a dozen of my rarely-used keys to conserve "the good stuff"), lubed them very lightly with Krytox, and put it all back together.

This magnificent keyboard is everything I wanted it to be. It cost 2 years of waiting, nearly $300 in parts (I bought several second-tier pieces), and several hours at the work bench.

Sweet. Just sweet!

PS - Bob Tibbetts is wrong, there is a difference between blue and white, although it is subtle. However, if you don't want to break out the soldering iron, get a Northgate with white Alps and lube them, that is doggone close for a lot less time and money.

Your modded board looks super clean fohat...good job!  Now that you've had a while to type on the Omnikey, what's your impressions on switch (capacitive BS versus blue ALPs) and chasis (IBM F vs. early model M vs Omnikey) differences?
Title: Re: Blue Alps Tour!

what's your impressions on switch (capacitive BS versus blue ALPs) and chasis (IBM F vs. early model M vs Omnikey) differences?

Of course these existential questions are of the type: Which is a better vehicle, a sports car or a pickup truck?

First, to be very picky and technical, let me reiterate that I do not believe that it is possible to hear or feel any difference between the "switch types" of IBM buckling springs - the activation of the electrical impulse happens underneath the "catastrophic" buckling of a spring which obliterates all other sounds and feelings - and that all of the perceived differences of between Model M and Model F are in the "chassis" which I would define as the entire frame system (including various internal plates as well as the outer case itself). I do, of course, believe that the capacitive switching system of the Model F is vastly superior in terms of durability, etc, but I don't think that humans can feel it.

That said, thousands of words have been expended here on M vs F so I won't beat that dead horse any further than to say that the multiple metal plates (2 of them in an interesting tension/compression relationship) in the Model F make it resonate ("sing") with a quality that I can only call "life" while the plastic barrel plate of the Model M makes any resonance it produces dull and lifeless in comparison. So, while the floss mod quiets (ie reduces the higher resonances and "ping") the buckling springs without "deadening" them, the M had little "life" to lose in the first place.

The Omnikey, like the Model F XT and F-122, has a metal case back. This case back is at least as thick as the Model F, and has a magnificent beige paint job that is probably very thick and baked on. This solid heavy back contributes to a very solid feel and sound. The case upper is very well made, but they do tend to yellow if you are unlucky. I do not care for the removable (and do not be tricked into imagining that a common male-male PS/2 cable can replace it) AT-type cable. I am going to fabricate some other cable options but that is for later. Suffice to say that the Northgate case, second only to old IBM cases, is the best I have ever had. But, I still drool over aluminum cases!

So, about those blue Alps switches. Naturally, there is a desire to compare them to all the other "clicky" switch types. In general, Alps activate high up, so that you have to give them a sharp snap at the top to get them moving, but then they seem to "fall away" afterwards. I consider this to be ideal for typing, since there is ample time to get off the key and bottoming out is rarely an issue. This, I believe, is why Alps are the best switches for typing, by far. And I like the clicky ones best, of course, but the orange ones are good.

What are the differences between blue Alps and white Alps, since there seems to be at least one set of specs that say they are the same?

Honestly, I think that the only substantial difference is weight (aka force) but the lighter blues seem somehow "crisper" because of their lighter touch. My experience with old-style complicated white Alps (on at least 3 different models and manufacturers of keyboards) is that whites are a relatively heavy switch, but that blues are considerably lighter. Other people have other opinions.

I gave these a quick light brush with Krytox, which is probably a good idea for almost any switch.

All in all, the upgrade to blue Alps is subtle but real, and valuable. However, for someone lacking in soldering skills, time, money, or motivation, buying an Omnikey 101 with white Alps and cleaning and lubing them is probably an excellent plan.

How is the shine on the omnikey caps? I was able to type on one for a bit, once, and that killed it for me. I just can't seem to stand the slipperyness. Once matias gets done with other caps design and manufacture, perhaps that can be fixed. How do you lube alps? People seem to do it in plenty of ways.

I kind of want to use the oranges in my M0116 as is once I'm done with it for a bit, but I'm also considering simply stealing a bunch of click leaves from a white alps I never use and creating an abomination identical to blues in every way (unless the click leaf design had changed as well).

I need to inspect the click leaves of blue & white switches more closely, but note that the switch plate is definitely different between blue and white Alps, and there are some suggestions online that the blue switches had some dry lubricant added as well?

You can definitely use the orange Alps spring with the white switch (or the white click leaf with the orange switch – you get the same result either way, with a different slider color).

Personally I’m a big fan of: take the housing, slider, spring, and switch plate from dampened tactile cream Alps switch, and cut a few loops off the spring; add the click leaf from a white Alps switch, possibly bending the click leaf very slightly for a bit more click; add some lubricant to the metal bits that contact the slider, and maybe to the areas of contact between housing and slider.

The result has a weight comparable to blue Alps, but with an even nicer click (due to the slight bending), and otherwise no sound when the slider hits the bottom/top of the housing.

How is the shine on the omnikey caps?

I have 2 of these. The one in the photo is great, the keys are in excellent condition.

The other one has very shiny keys. I will probably fix it up, lube the whites, and sell it. I have a few Alps-compatible sets of keys, but they will not be a perfect match and will lack various longer keys. I have not tried a set from an old Apple, but that might work pretty well.

Keycaps from an Extended Keyboard or Extended Keyboard II will work, except that the function row are all rotated 90°.

If you get one of the Alps-made versions of the Apple Design Keyboard, the caps should work. The keyboard is rubber domes, but the caps are nice thick dye-subbed PBT, cf. http://deskthority.net/photos-videos-f8/apple-design-keyboard-made-by-alps-and-others-t7400.html

My experience is that the ones with detachable cables are Alps-compatible, and the ones with fixed cables are not.

And yes, those are good keys. I was hoping that things like Shift and Enter were going to work.

All of the Apple Design Keyboards, M2980, have fixed cables as far as I know. The Alps ones can be distinguished by the shape of the case bottom as that Deskthority page explains, or by looking for ones made in the Czech Republic, the US, or Mexico. (The ones made in China or Thailand are various non-Alps rubber domes.)

The only part you’d have trouble with is the numpad; the Apple layout has 2 1x1 keys where a typical IBM layout puts the 2-unit-tall + key.

For those of you that want to mod a Northgate Omnikey 101 like this, and are annoyed with the original cable, here is another mod.

Personally, I am no fan of detachable cables anyway, and this one has several annoyances. It comes out at the right rear, with an L-shaped mini-DIN6 plug (which makes you think that a male-male PS/2 cable would work) pointing to the right, and an AT-style plug at the computer end, and it is coiled. My desk setup expects a cable going left, but I am just out of synch anyway.

But you can easily use a PS/2 cable from a junk keyboard, such as the $1 kind from the thrift store. I used a good long beige/gray IBM non-coiled cable that also had a ground wire. The original Northgate has a ground wire screwed to the metal case back, so I hooked it up that way anyway. Perhaps it is not really needed. I also pulled off the clip that the donor cable plugs into so that I could use female-female jumper connectors and avoid soldering, but that is only one way to do it.

Here is the pinout noted directly on a photo for your convenience. Always double-check on your own rig just to be sure.

The 2 blank wires do not seem to be doing anything, but I did notice one thing that seems strange. With the original cable running through an AT-to-PS/2 adapter, the arrow keys made the cursor fly, much faster than with my other keyboards. With this new wiring, the cursor moves very slowly, more slowly that with the others. I have not changed any settings, otherwise. Weird.

So I got some blue Alps today (had to get some after Captains review and got really lucky few days ago) and have been playing a bit around with them. I only have complicated white Alps to compare them with but there really is a quality difference here, the blues are a lot smoother and they feel "cleaner". The whites are a bit heavier I think and they have more of a bump. I'll do a small video review tomorrow.

Video reviews of keyboards are often hit and miss when trying to reproduce the sound of the keys, but yours seems to be very good.  I'm fortunate enough to have all three switch types reviewed and the sounds in the video closely match the sounds of my boards.  So nice job.  :thumb:

Story time!  Anyone remember this (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=45656.msg1286237#msg1286237)?  In case you forgot, here's that picture again.

And guess what I had on the seat next to me.  My Kishsaver and a certain Blue Alps board that I was trying out.

Well, when the stupid stupid bird hit the windshield, it clearly shattered (see above for reminder) and little pieces went all over everything in the cabin.  In my lap, my backpack, my Kishsaver, and our beloved Blue Alps board.  :(  See for yourself.

This was unfortunate, to say the least.  I immediately texted CPTBadAss to tell him to alert AKIMbrO of my massive transgression.  Well, that was actually after I called for a tow.  But anyway, I felt awful, but thankfully AKIMbrO really is a huge bro after all.  He's been very patient with me as I've taken quite some time to find the right opportunity to clean the board (it's been raining here for so long...), so thanks for that.

Anyway, I've got the board all cleaned up now, and it will be on its way to 1pq very soon!  I expect to be able to ship it out either tomorrow or Wednesday, depending on how my schedule lines up with the post office's hours.   :thumb:

Thanks for putting up with this huge delay, everyone.  I really am sorry about the mess I made.  At least it cleaned up just fine.

So there you go!  This board has been through a lot.  But it's a persistent bugger, and hasn't given up just yet!

You all are missing the point. The Omnikey has now been tested to be bird and glass proof. If *that isn't* a sign of how amazing this keyboard is, I don't know what else is. We pretty much had Hoffman shoot a turkey and glass at it like it was an aircraft engine and it survived. Now *that's* keyboard science.

Okay, carry on. :)

Sooner or later someone will receive that northgate board with the caps glued to the board and missing all the switches underneath, lulz.

Don't give Hashbaz any ideas before it gets to me! hwood, um...you may receive a non-functioning board, but that's normal.  ;)

hashbaz might not be happy with me sharing this, but whatever.  He's not even using it!  It's sitting on his couch in his office.  :P

Sorry hash.  huehuehue  xD

So cold Hoff.  Not sure we can be kendama bros anymore.  I actually have been using it, and I have a very obscure reason for why it was not plugged in when you guys came to my desk.  I had to switch back to the KMAC when a coworker came over for a code review since the KRO on this thing is not high enough to handle my window manager properly (i3) and I had to move some windows around to places they are not normally at.

Nuclearsandwich and I actually discussed that at my desk if you had been paying attention

 :-[  Oops.  :(

Well I suppose it's a good thing I was only playfully jabbing then!  Otherwise I would feel like a right *******.  I kind of still do.  :|

You're nice enough to let me tour Pixar and I come back on the forums and accuse you of things.  Not cool, Hoffman.  Not cool.   >:D

I think AKIMbO secretly hates blue alps and so wants to keep this board out of his hands for as long as possible.

Sorry for the lengthy delay everyone.  It's been a combo of technical difficulties and procrastination.  A few weeks ago I tried to plug in the board one last time before sending it on, and noticed that the cable connector on the keyboard had become detached from the housing and was being pushed into the case when I tried to plug the cable into it.  I asked Akimbo what he wanted me to do and offered to open it up and take a look.  He said to do that, and then I didn't do it for a long time.  Again, real life busyness and procrastination on my part.

So I finally opened it up and found that the piece of plastic that holds the cable port in place has cracked pretty badly.  Not quite sure what the best way to fix it is.  Any thoughts?

What kind of cable is it? If it's AT or PS/2, you could use a new PS/2 connector. Apart from that, epoxy might be able to fix it, I would unscrew it from the case to glue it back together though.

That whole cable affair is stupid. In reply #157 I showed how to hook up a standard PS/2 cable scavenged from a regular junk keyboard.

Are you kidding?

He took a road trip with mean-ass cats and moved to the country music capitol.

Unless I'm too young to get the reference.

About to hit the road for a 16 hour drive with a backseat full of precariously packed, irreplaceable keyboards (lzgh, ssks, at fs, f122s, kingsavers, zkb2s, etc.) and 2 mean ass cats. It's the creme de la creme of my collection.

Wish me luck and hope the cats don't crap on my early 80s IBMs!

Did not know this.

Haha figured.  Onev day I will try them.  One of the few switches left I want to try that I could see myself using on a daily basis.

The great thing about the specimen on tour is that it is an extremely desirable chassis as well as great switches.

Trying blue Alps in any of their native boards is not likely to be as satisfying or impressive.

I feel quite fortunate, as when I was first starting my keyboard adventures this year, I asked a friend if he knew of any old keyboards lying around at his workplace.  He said he found an Omni Key/102 in their recycle pile and sent me a picture of a blue Alps slider under one of the keycaps.  I about shot out of my chair!  All I paid for was the shipping.

I'm typing on the thing now, as it is in my regular rotation with a Das Keyboard w/MX blues, a K70 with reds, and an AT101W with Alps blacks.

I have to say I do like both the MX blue and the Alps blue.  The MX blue are higher-pitched and have a more tin-like click.  The Alps blues have a more "rounded" / smooth click that seems to integrate a little better with the sound of the keycap bottoming out.  Perhaps it wasn't that way new, but my board is vintage 1988 and has obviously seen some use!  I can't make an objective comparison on my speed or accuracy differences between the two boards, as they are at different levels.  I find that I sometimes mistype on the Omni vs. the Das, but that would be naturally considering the Omni is elevated a few inches higher than it should be (sitting on top of my desk instead of the keyboard drawer).  The board oozes quality, and it is very satisfying to type on with Alps blues.  If I had to choose between the MX blue and the Alps blue, I'd take the Alps.

The Omni Key/102 is built like a tank and I do not foresee parting with it.  This sounds stupid, and of course I'd never take back the experience, but being sent a board with such desirable switches right off the bat kind of let some of the air out of my keyboard pursuit!  Someone mentioned that there are still Topres, so those are my next target, I suppose.

I'm kind of surprised that there weren't more reviews of this board when people received it in Akimbo's tour.

You should sell it. The fix is probably easy and the board is outstanding.

I just found this thread and would be very interested to try that board.
