Hey,
Just wondering if using Gravatar is an option at all. I see that Geekhack uses SMF so maybe this would help:

That said - I have never run a board using SMF and I do not know the author of the module, but the option would be really nice IMO, especially since the mod allows the user to choose Gravatar or the integrated avatar system.

Some users, myself included, will simply not upload and maintain avatars on multiple different websites, but will upload and maintain one of them that can be reused everywhere and changed easily. I think that Geekhack would have a richer user experience if the default was Gravatar until a user-uploaded image was supplied, or "None" was selected.

Anyways - just my $0.02.

Something to consider I guess - the gravatar software I linked was last updated in 2k7. Not sure how often SMF API's are deprecated.
