Title: Post Your Keyboard Evolution!
Post by: Phedran on Sat, 19 October 2013, 01:00:52
I tried to search for a thread like this, so sorry if it's a repeat (or in the wrong area).

I've gone through a wide variety of hardware in my life over decades of computer use, and I know I'm not the only one. And that's before I got into mechanical keyboards!

Post your keyboard evolution!

I'm still pretty new to mechanical keyboards, but this is my evolution so far:

I love collection threads.  Wish I could see more of them.  It's interesting to me to see what kinds of things different people want/need in the boards they buy.  For example, Phedran obviously a gamer that happened upon geekhack.  For me, almost everything is TKLs because that's just the size that 'feels right'.  The collection is too big to post here but I made a thread in my sig.

I had just a generic rubber dome keyboard for years that I still have somewhere. It had novelty keys like "Panic!" that I stuck on it (not cherry MX sadly) and I eventually retired it in favour of this:

(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41ZPB63CYXL.jpg)
Saitek Gamer's Keyboard. It was (potentially?) one of the first backlit keyboards however the keys weren't actually transparent so it was more of a novelty than actually useful. The keypad was really hard to configure for my 15 year old self so I never really bothered with it.

Eventually it just stopped responding to most key presses (it later turned out that I probably just needed to re-solder the cable onto the board as I found out on a forum I used to post on) and I replaced it with this:
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/81TaWyR5gjL._SL1500_.jpg)
Which died in the same way several years later and was subsequently replaced with this:

(http://www.cclonline.com/images/MediaPool/-2fc-2fwhBAXpJBo2RjoOprDKQ-3d-3d.jpg)
Notice a trend? At the time, I was considering getting a mechanical keyboard as I'd used them at various tournaments and suchlike. The only ones available at the time for me were the Razer BWU (it was over £100 at the time, I wasn't paying that for a keyboard back then) and the Thermaltake Meka which I had considered buying but decided not to due to the weird layout (in hindsight, damn good decision).

I eventually decided that mechanical keyboards were the way to go about 6 months later, bought a QFR with blacks and started posting on geekhack. Bought a Cherry G80 with clears about a year later but I use the QFR pretty much all of the time.

Started with Logitech G11 because a friend of mine had one and it looked really good + it had macro keys xD Used only 3 of the macro keys so it was really a waste since it was so big and clumpy. Still the best rubber dome I have owned though.

(http://worldssimplestsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Razer-Lycosa-Angle-0.png)
The next one I got was Razer Lycosa since I managed to spill beer over my G11 multiple times :P
Started to hate it after a while due to it being so shiny, it was impossible to not have greasy fingerprints all over it. It also had the worst mediaplayer-system I have ever seen on a keyboard. Totally useless! It stopped working after around 1 year and I decided to go for a mechanical keyboard next since I wanted a keyboard that didn't just stop randomly working after a year.

(http://xahlee.info/kbd/i/noppoo_choc_mini_keyboard_78755.jpg)
After reading a lot of reviews and looking through Geekhack I went for a Noppoo Choc Mini with brown switches.
The thing that made me decide for the Noppoo was that the F-row was so close to the number-row. I was playing WoW at the time and it was perfect for the amount of keybinds needed, now I had more options since I could use F-keys aswell. Got a new keyboard a year later, but this time it was not due to my old one breaking down.

(http://i.imgur.com/hFGvYSt.jpg)
Ducky Mini, the one I am using atm. When I think about it my keyboards have grown gradually smaller haha.

I started pasting in image links and then it all went to heck in a hand basket so I'll just type it out of frustration.

Original Microsoft split ergo keyboard -> Microsoft split ergo with media keys -> Logitech G15 original -> Steelseries 7G (first mechanical) -> Leopold FC700R -> KBT Pure orange backlit -> KBC Poker -> Some Cherry POS board -> another KBT Pure with oneproduct aluminum case (won /r/mechanicalkeyboards best picture 2012) -> KMAC Mini (first Korean custom) -> then it all gets a bit fuzzy the order because I got a lot around the same time: Cherry 1800, QFR MX Greens, 11900, LZ-GH, MX Mini, ErgoDox, another KBT Pure MX Whites, GON 60%, GON 75%, Realforce 87 45g, another KBT Pure in hammer case. On deck for delivery or in production: LZ-CE, recent FMJ style 2, layered 1800 from LZ.

I try to rotate through everything I still own on a regular basis and change keycap sets so none of them get particularly worn.

Eh no peeks right now but some Logitech rubber dome for years and years → Filco Majestouch 2 brown switch → Rosewill RK-9000 blue switch (sold) → HHKB Pro 2.

I will decide soon if I prefer Topre or Cherry, and then get 2 Realforce 87U 55gs if the former, another Filco and get PBT keycaps for both if the latter.

I first started off with a computer that wasn't too good to start with a few years back... So I then saved and bought a decent system with a K90.
After a year and some lurking on GH I thought why not? And I bought a shine 3 and don't regret it at all.

Leopold TKL w/ MX-Blues -> Filco TKL w/ MX-Browns (okay board, garbage switch) -> G80-1800 MX-Blues -> 87' SSK -> (here is starts to get blurry) KMAC/eDox/chicony (switched to Colemak)

A lot of random stuff I found in junk stores/ eBay/ flea-markets/ bought new/ etc... but finally (last couple years):

a few HHKBs/ various Realforces' -> HHKB 55g -> Type-S & a dental modded HHKB

In the future? Perhaps a Burroughs, Kishsaver, Hall Effect, High-Pro or uTron?

EDIT: added switching layouts.

Jwaz how do you compare the type S to the dental band mod?
Title: Re: Post Your Keyboard Evolution!
Post by: jwaz on Mon, 16 December 2013, 11:46:25
I like both, the dental band mod reduces the key travel a lot so it feels different. It changed my typing style to be more... correct? It's softer and I try to not press hard and sort of 'dance' across the keys. When I'm at home using the Type-S then I'm not bottoming out as harshly because I'm used to the smaller key travel. They're both SUPER quiet.

Yeah my dental band mod plus lube 55g HHKB is silent for sure....I didn't use the HHKB enough before to notice the reduced key travel

Hmn, well if the numpad had an Alt key... you technically could use it for 100% input by typing unicode :)) next, it will be evolution to a binary keyboard, you only need 2 keys suckers.

My evolution...
BTC 5100
(http://www.esis.com.au/Adv3Acc/BTC5100cBlack.jpg)
These were my keyboard of choice for quite awhile, and I had a few of them. Earlier ones were very nice and had individual domes over a proper PCB. Last one I had was a ****ty sheet domes over membrane... so I decided I wanted something of much higher quality and started reading up and decided on MX...

G80-3000LPCEU-2
(http://www.cherrycorp.com/english/keyboards/Office/images/G80-3000_MX.jpg)
My first encounter with MX, but it was just too damn big and I didn't care for the force of blacks at the time so...

I went on the hunt for a smaller keyboard like it, and found the KBC Poker and this weird place and then...
my obsession with vintage Cherry keycaps and G80s (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=38482.0)

But I still love 60% the best.

Used some run-of-the-mill rubber dome that came with the Dell PC I used to use.

Then when I built my first PC, I bought a QFR w/ Blacks. [c. mid/late 2012]
(http://www.iforce.co.nz/i/pjyddbyr.n5s.jpg)
(That's the actual 'board with some blank WASD caps)

Then I managed to get my hands on a graphite Leopold FC700R w/ Browns. [c. Early 2013]
(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3794/9208313790_958d17d5b1.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/reomero/9208313790) (http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5461/9892766983_e6d6a2465c.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/reomero/9892766983)

Since I sold my QFR after getting the Leo, for some reason I started to miss linear switches so I got my hands on a Noppoo Mid 87 w/ Reds. [c. mid 2013]
(http://iforce.co.nz/i/xdoaf1xx.kzi.jpg)
(Actual 'board with Miami set)

After that I got curious and decided to try the 60% layout. (Which I now love -- can't see myself using a bigger layout) [Nov' 2013]
(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3696/11332801186_7a14a99f13.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/reomero/11332801186)

And after that? Hmm.. maybe I'll take the plunge and try out cupped rubber. Though I found a broken BWU from a local dude for dirt cheap, which I'll be harvesting some Blue switches from.

The first keyboard I called my own was an old NMB Right Touch RT101+ that had Alps Sliders.  I LOVED this keyboard and only replaced it because I spilled water on it and it killed some keys  :(
[attach=1]

Out of sheer desperation I found the least offensive membrane keyboard I could find at a second-hand store, it served me well when I needed something quiet.
[attach=2]

I got an IBM Model M and felt right at home on the mechanical switches.  It was a great keyboard, but a bit to loud.  I've loaned it to a friend who uses it at his work.
[attach=3]

I wanted to go back to mechanical and picked up this Dell AT101W.  It is a good keyboard, but still had a large footprint.  This was causing issues with my small keyboard drawer.
[attach=4]

I went for a nice compact Apple Bluetooth keyboard.  Perfect size and is one of the best membrane keyboards I've used... but it is Bluetooth.  Small things like Batteries, needing to re-pair the device whenever I switch OSes (I dual-boot Win 8 and OS X), missing key strokes (right ctrl, insert), driver requirements for Windows, and the inability to use to select my boot drive on my PC's BIOS quickly soured my opinion of it.
[attach=5]

Finally I recently picked up a Tex Beetle.  I LOVE this keyboard.  Every key I can think of is available on this 60%, it doesn't make weird compromises on the layout, is completely driver-less on any OS, remembers your custom config settings even when unplugged (like the ctrl/capslock swap), and has a dedicated arrow cluster.
[attach=6]

My only disappointment with my Beetle has been the Cherry Brown switches.  I have studied Cherry switches for years and I thought these were going to be the perfect key switches for me.  What I have found is that they feel very similar to my old Dell, although quieter.  The "tactile" feel is so subtle I barely notice it, the Apple keyboard has a more defined activation point.  Mostly I think I let myself get over-hyped about the browns. They are still good, just not the nirvana I was expecting.

I can say I will never buy another 100% keyboard again, I love my Beetle.  :thumb:

Thanks for the thread, this was a great idea!

Start from Razer Blackwidow, pretty sure this is the first mechanical keyboard for a lot of people
(http://assets.razerzone.com/eeimages/products/2917/razer-black-widow-2013-gallery-3.png)
(not my picture)

And the next keyboard is Ducky shine 2 78version, bought this board because of the lighting and different switch.

The next one is Filco ninja TKL red switch, still one of my favorite OEM board.

The next one is my second Korean keyboard, GON NS-86.  Also one of my favorite board.

And the last one right now, 456gt.  The best keyboard that I have used so far.

I don't think I have posted in here yet.

First mech keyboard was the razer blackwidow, back at the start of last year. I had it up until the end of august I think. Then this followed. Some of these boards have been sold off, the blackwidow, the two qfrs and I think that is it.

1. Blackwidow MX Blues (no real pics)
2. Quickfire Rapid MX Blues (I blame this keyboard for all of these keyboard purchases in the past 4-5 months)
(http://cdn.overclock.net/1/13/900x900px-LL-13f034a4_DSC_0653.jpeg)
3. Another Quickfire Rapid MX Blues, this was my modding board. I changed it to stickered 80g mx blues (ghetto greens) and painted a plum crazy and white top for it.
Although I sold the board I think I am going to paint the Cooler Master Topre keyboard this same purple whenever it comes out.

5. Poker II MX Blacks (if I had to choose one single mx switch to use forever, this might be it, amazing for gaming and typing)
I am going to backlight this when maxkeyboards releases their doubleshot backlit keycaps
(http://i.imgur.com/es9avmQ.jpg)
6. Kishsaver
(http://cdn.overclock.net/3/36/900x900px-LL-3687c134_DSC_0646.jpeg)
7. Filco MJ2 MX Blues with blue vortex case. I used the classic beige doubleshots on this for awhile but I decided they would look even better on my next keyboard.

8. Sprits "Face W" in an FMJ design #2 case, with a 4mm thick green plate, green leds, green stickered and lubed 67g mx clears with transparent tops on it with the classic beige doubleshots. The actual board should be here by the end of next month but I decided to put my poker into the aluminum case and put the keycaps on it so see what it would look like. I was not disappointed.

It honestly might be the poker 2. I just love the thing and I know I will even more when I get some backlit keycaps and leds for it.

Model M feels like garbage after fake typing on the kishsaver(or any model f I guess) but it's a must to keep I guess. The two QFR's were okay. The face w is without a doubt going to be the nicest keyboard I own so I will really have to see when it's all put together. I am also really looking forward to getting the kishsaver converted, whenever or if ever that happens. The filco in the aluminum case is my daily keyboard for right now, I might replace it with a better aluminum tkl later on, I missed out on a lot of groupbuys because i just started really messing with keyboards recently(I wish I could have gotten an LZ-GH or LZ-S from the original group buys since I believe those are the best designed tkl's as far as the case. No seams on it since the board goes in through the bottom).

Better pictures will be taken once sprits pcb and plate and everything is actually in it.
I don't think I am missing anything, I possibly could be.
:)) which one do you think is the best?

I am on the other hand, I hate poker due to the layout, I just can't get used to 60%.  :confused:
I have tried buckling spring, but I don't like the feeling.  It gives me a weird feel on my finger  :rolleyes:  I agreed that the LZ-S/GH have a pretty good design
I can understand the dislike for 60% keyboards from a lot of people, I don't blame them. Even after a couple months, using the arrow keys on the poker is still a bit difficult. But the f1-12 and everything else is if anything easier since I don't have to move my hands as much. Although I still like 60% more, I am even going to get the 40% board lol

I do agree the model ms feel a bit weird, they are so much more tiring than any other switch I have used. It isn't because they are heavy or anything, they are just somehow tiring. And as I said, now that I have tried capacitive buckling springs, the model m feels even worse.

Here are some pictures from my imgur:

I don't think I have posted in here yet.

First mech keyboard was the razer blackwidow, back at the start of last year. I had it up until the end of august I think. Then this followed. Some of these boards have been sold off, the blackwidow, the two qfrs and I think that is it.

1. Blackwidow MX Blues (no real pics)
2. Quickfire Rapid MX Blues (I blame this keyboard for all of these keyboard purchases in the past 4-5 months)

3. Another Quickfire Rapid MX Blues, this was my modding board. I changed it to stickered 80g mx blues (ghetto greens) and painted a plum crazy and white top for it.
Although I sold the board I think I am going to paint the Cooler Master Topre keyboard this same purple whenever it comes out.

out of curiosity, do you find yourself using the legs with your filco in the vortex case? I find that without the legs, the board is a bit too flat, and my fingers are depressing the keys at a slight angle. With the legs, it feels a tad steep. Right now I'm using them with the legs and dealing with the steepness. I am curious about the board angle in other alu boards.

I prefer it without the legs, no problems using it that way. It is super tall with the legs :P

Funny you brought that up, because I am messing with the case right now. I am filling in the led holes, patching the little gap between the top piece and the bottom, and painting it. I didn't like all of the tooling marks over it, and the gap was annoying. I figured the case was too cheap to warrant reanodizing, but too nice to stop using.

I stripped the case down, hopefully monday or tueday I will break out the JB Weld and start patching it up, and then prime it, paint it and be done. I am going to paint it with graphite colored car wheel paint which should look nice hopefully. I am throwing the DSA dolch keycaps on it as well. I also swapped out the switches for some old black switches and I put 68g springs inside it and I will be lubing them next week as well. Lots of stuff to do on it  :-X

Patching the gap between the top piece and bottom piece, wouldn't that mean you will never be able to reopen it again?  :eek: Luckily, my gray case doesn't have any external tooling marks, and the gap is dealable. Am waiting patiently (read: annoyingly) for Vortex to take their sweet time with producing more black alu cases.

No, it will be able to be opened again lol. There is a little lip on the top half of the case, and all I am going to do is fill it in. Hard to describe I guess, but it will be fully functional.

If I don't like the graphite paint, I will just paint it black.

Oh, you mean the top and half and bottom half are not properly aligned? I found that when screwing in the bottom screws, I push the top half to be aligned, and tighten the screws while holding it there, so when all is done, the top and bottom half are aligned properly, and there is no noticeable lip. But then again, your FaceW board may have accustomed you to higher tolerances than me  :p
