I just bought one of these to replace my Razer BlackWidow Ultimate. I have no experience using Topre switches, but I'm hoping that I really like them. I never use the number pad and extremely seldom use the directional keys (never for gaming), so I figured that I'd take the plunge with the rave reviews that everyone gives it. I'm just wondering if there are any people out there that use the thing for gaming and if there are any obvious strengths or weaknesses with this keyboard. Thanks!

I just like the feel of Topre, so I like gaming with Topre. I would say that a downside is that there's no dedicated F-row if you happen to need it for RTS and such. Other than that, I think 60% is great for gaming, more ergonomic by keeping your hands closer together which can arguably help with aim for FPS.

I actually dislike my HHKB for gaming.
It's not super easy to spam keys, and I use my F keys very frequently.
For something like LoL it might be OK though.

Then again you can play LoL with anything

Nothing wrong with gaming with Topre switches, but the layout is the problem.

I play FPS with mine - no problems, other than having to look at the keyboard to press 2 keys for function keys, like F5 for quick save becomes Fn-5.
The weight is fine, double-tapping is fine. Holding down 2 or 3 keys at the same time is fine.

No dedicated F-row is okay for me. The only thing I really use it for are quicksaves and screenshots. Nothing I can't live without. There are imbedded F-keys though, correct?

Oh yes, just press Fn + w number key, 3 = F3, 5 = F5 and so on. '-' = F11 and '=' = F12.

Very personal, methinks. Do you use any of the missing keys? If not, I say go for it ;)

You should be able to remap the F# keys you like to something else. Gaming usually uses few enough keys that there should be some left over.
I know the HHKB is a "special case" but lots of people (myself included) have gamed with a 60% without too much difficulty.

I game on the FC660(C and M) layout so shouldn't be a problem with the HHKB. I even find that gaming on a classic TKL is LESS efficient since the F row is too far anyway. And Topre are perfect for gaming. <3

Terrible keyboard for most games, other than your average fps, the lack of keys really hinders your performance.
-
If you play a very spammy RTS like SC2 topre is probably not the best. When I played on my 45g Realforce I had a lot of difficulty rapidly double tapping numbers and performing quick repetitive actions.
-
That being said, if you suck at all games you play you will probably be fine with a HHKB.
-
I play mainly FPS games like Serious Sam TFE/TSE, Serious Sam 3 and UT3.....and some Dead Space 3 and Lost Planet 3, no problem with it. My score/kills with my HHKB 2's is about the same as when I use MX switch keyboards....

Yeah..I'm not sure what it is but I just don't like using Topre boards as much for gaming...whether that is double taps or anything..just doesn't feel right? If I was forced to use it I could but I'd prefer not to. Variable for sure is worse cause the light keys are too sensitive....
I love Topre boards...but just not for gaming...

I don't have one instead, the only think I would worry about is the location of ctrl key, it is not located at far left bottom of the keyboard, may not very easy to press for FPS, you know, most of the time ctrl is crouching and extreme important.

Having control where caps lock is doesn’t make it harder to reach. It’s literally right next to the WASD cluster. The only problem I’ve experienced with FPSs is that it’s not easy to ride the actuation point. So making tiny adjustments is difficult, but not really all that much harder than with browns. Probably easier than with blues.
