Title: Desk lamps
Post by: Creizai on Tue, 22 October 2013, 04:58:06
I'm looking for something that looks good, functional, isn't hot and doesn't blind me.

That is very nice though.

I just use 2 from Ikea, one a small light clamped to my monitor for an extra burst of light if I need it.

You can find this at Ikea. It is not hot. You can put your hand on this after at least 6 hours and feel no heat. It is also very flexible and functional. The light brightness on mine is amazing, but that may vary from different Ikea stores, and most likely countries as well. Also it's super pretty.

As it stands (pun intended) it's a super good perfect lamp.  :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

If you put an 100W lightbulb there, it will obviously get quite hot. I'm not really impressed by its quality either.

My favorite lamp is Lival Shuttle Plus. Excellent one except non-standard proprietary socket.

You don't need a 100W bulb for it though, because the one that (I assume) comes with it is just bright enough for a medium-large room, and is a lot less accident prone. And I think the quality is just fine, the joints are smooth, it is well balanced, which means I can bend it over the edge of my desk and under it without it falling and so on. I don't actually see the problem with it.

The arm isn't strong enough. I'd like to put my portable headphones (HD 25) on it, but it moves then.

Mine didn't come with any kind of bulb IIRC. I strongly prefer halogen anyway.

What are you guys on about? LEDs are the coolest, lowest powered bulbs you can get.

There are screws on it, which you can tighten. Seriously, you can just use a knife. If you don't have a knife, the screws are tall and the sides textured, so you get a good grip of them. I just now picked up a little throwing knife, and tightened the arms on it.

I've noticed it, of course. But they were getting loose all the time. I mean, I was used to a simple, but very solid lamp made in early 90s in Europe... I sometimes forget I can't expect this kind of quality from cheap Chinese garbage nowadays... and Ikea isn't even the worst. By far.

Actually haven't used my lamp as a makeshift holder, so I don't know if the screws go loose on mine or not, but it seems pretty solid. I tried putting my headphones on it, though, and I encountered no issues. The lamp didn't even budge, it stayed as it stood.

Everything seems perfect on my end, it doesn't seem cheap or especially "made in China"-ish either. You could've gotten some spin-off or something. Since our lamps seem so different, I guess we'll have to label it "Be careful where you buy this", I suppose.

Well, in Ikea, obviously.

Maybe yours is older... Things have been going downhill with Ikea. For example, they replaced the True Swedish Crayfish by an ordinary Chinese one in their restaurants few years ago.

They didn't actually have them in stock when I was buying it, I had to wait for a few weeks.

Although I haven't got a Koncept, I have a vaguely similar USB multi-LED lamp.

The shadows it casts are freaky! :)
