Non-Linear Systems manufactured and sold the first digital voltmeter. This is a video of one of their edge lit digital displays in operation. These early NLS digital meters used a resistor dividing network and relays to select the display digits. If you see one of these in operation you will hear a lot of mechanical relay noise as the range and digits are selected. NLS used this type of edge lit display until the mid 1960s
