Title: Das Keyboard vs CM Storm
Post by: Pain on Wed, 30 October 2013, 09:53:38
Hey,
I want to buy a new Keayboard with red switches.
I wanted to ask what Keyboard do you think is better: DAS Keyboard S Professional Quit or the CM Storm Quickfire Rapid?
I will use the Keyboard mainly for gaming.

I suggest the QFR, as I have had a decent experience with mine, and the build quality is comparable to Filco.

DAS: too shiny, so hard to keep clean.

And welcome to Geekhack!

lol I'm actually writing this with my Das Keyboard now but I'd actually suggest QFR.

Like he said Das' gloss surface is kind of hard to maintain, also Das switched manufacture I find the quality isn't the same as the old one anymore.

QFR is also more popular with more customizing options.  If you want full size then get QuickFire XT, if not then QuickFire Rapid.

And here's another Das Keyboard user who'll recommend the CM Quick Fire Rapid or XT. Seriously, Das Keyboard unfortunately changed their factory and the result is a bloody mess in regards of quality...  :(

It's not that the das is "hard to clean"....

It's that scratching it up is an eventuality...

It'll look really ****ty and uneven given time.. you'll have shiny spots, and scratchy spots.

Exactly, it makes it look sort of fragile and ugly because its easy to scratch it. I'm having the exact same problem with my Matias MQP, reason why I'll paint it with black mat paint next week...  :))

lol I know if only they stuck with Costar.  Though luckily I'm one of those Costar Das Keyboard owner.  :D

LOL yeah my first impression that was didn't Matias learned from Das regarding glossy surface?  At least Razer smart up and made it matte in the 2013 edition.

My opinion is that if you don't get the Das Ultimate, which apparently still has good quality, might as well just get the Rapid. The Professional is nothing special.

If you have never tried TKL form factor, definitely go with QFR
Even if you don't like it, you can resale and dont lose much since it's cheap to begin with :)

FWIW I bought a QFR as my first TKL.  Now I would prefer not to buy fillsize at all if I can avoid it - they take up too much space, are bigger to carry around, keycaps sets are often more expensive as you need to numpad keycaps too.

I can have the mouse closer to the keyboard, which is somewhat more ergonomic.

And I don't miss the numpad.

Yeah totally agreed. That's the reason why I don’t use my model M & Dell AT any more. The SSK is somewhat enticing but the huge bezel, high price and lack of the win key annoys me (both in OSX & windows).

Unlike a lot of people here, I use the arrow keys, page up/down, home/end, insert/delete all the time so I can't go any smaller than TKL.

ctrl insert/shift insert/shift del > ctrl-c/ctrl-v/ctrl-x
Also insert to toggle insert/overwrite mode is nice, del shifts the whole line to the left and distracts my eyes

The TK toggle layout isn't as good, you can't feel the keys by the arrows/6 keys clusters in TKL layout.

QFR with a thin bezel doesn't take up much space (one of the annoyances of the topre)

There's also the problem that the Das Quiet edition is brown switches, not red. :P
I have the Das Model S for Mac, and it's a decent keyboard, but I've heard build quality on other manufacturers is better. The original Dases seemed pretty great (pretty much rebranded cherry oem boards), but the one I have is kind of meh.

Das did change manufacturers at one stage, and quality dropped somewhat.
