I FINALLY GOT A FULL TIME JOB OFFER THAT PAYS ABOVE A LIVING WAGE!!!
I've been unemployed for far too long and have put in more resumes and cover letters than I would care to admit. I finally got a job offer working for the county after not hearing back from companies, interviews that went nowhere, and one job offer that was pulled when I countered (which an employee there told me to do) since it was below the market rate for the position. Not only does it have a living wage that will let me pay off my student loans pretty quickly (if I keep living with my parents), but it has medical, dental, disability, and life insurance, several nice retirement plan options, 12 paid holidays, 19 days of leave in the first year, 27 after 3 years, a clear performance related pay raise scale, room for advancement, and I get to carry a badge so I can harass demik when he rides his bike. Kidding about harassing demik, but since I'll be dealing with guardianship issues, I get a badge. All that's left to do is pass the physical and my background check, neither of which should be an issue.
And since I'm in Orange County, I don't think anything could express my feelings about this better than this video:

Gratz

But now you won't have as much time for us :-\
I'll still make time and I'll still have evenings and weekends to do woodworking projects.

Haha, doubtful. I've always been good with my spending and setting budgets for myself. It does mean I'll have more keyboard related discretionary income, but paying off those loans and getting a retirement fund started take priority.

CONGRATS
I know you've been stressing hard over this, so I'm super happy for you Nub. Definitely live with your family to save some money for as long as you can tolerate it.

Retirement fund? Now?

Fine, Pacifico it is ;)
Retirement fund? Now?
Si. I'm closer to 30 than 20 and ideally you should start planning your retirement in your early 20s. I know I can't count on Social Security being there for me and the job actually doesn't pay into SS, so I need to start squirreling money away and investing it early. Assuming I could save the same amount starting at 40 as I could starting now by the time I want to retire, I'd retire with more starting now thanks to interest and greater potential ROI.

Although I selfishly came in here hoping for a 4grabs clack sale to be on..... ;)
-
you think i am, a hipster?
Yes. According to the Keyboard hipster thread (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=50276.0), you are a hipster and a PBR will suit you fine.

Given my title, that does make sense.
how long till more money is blown on Keyboards.
Paychecks need to be coming in before money can be spent. And I'll need to figure out my costs, set up a budget, figure out how much discretionary income I'll have and where I can apportion it and so on.

Yeah, going without a job for a couple of months is stressful. For a full year it's depressing and gets hard not to give up. And I know there are people who go even longer than that.
congrats nubs. will you carry a firearm while at work?
I'll be deputized and get a badge, but no, no gun. The badge is mainly for credentials for carrying out investigations and presenting to lenders, banks, and the like while dealing with a ward's affairs or for working out the affairs of a deceased ward. The position is more of a social work type position that law enforcement.
woooo finally nubbs making bank ayyeeee
congrats
I wouldn't call it bank, but there is the potential to be making a decent amount, enough to pay off my student loans in a couple of years if I keep living with my parents for a couple of years.
-
Congrats buddy!
Guess we should finalize a plan for getting a drink then.
I will officially put out the date of 11/9/13. Your call on which brewery in the North County. First pint is on me :thumb:
I will post in the Beer thread for time and to make sure if anyone else wants to join.
Edited due to date fail :blank:
-
I've got a background check in Aliso Viejo in the afternoon on that date, so it would have to be later in the afternoon/evening. And the 11th is my birthday, so this job offer is perfect birthday timing.

That works fine for me. We could meet around 4 or 5, and have a nice dinner to go with our drinking/celebrating.
-
i live in OC too. what city do you live in
-
Up in Costa Mesa, practically HB.
-
Grats on the new job, nubby!
-
Screwed up on the date. I actually meant the 9th (a Saturday).
What do you think about meeting in Carlsbad at Pizza Port? Tons of beers on tap and great pizza.
Drive should be about 50 min from Costa Mesa.
-
That sounds like a plan. Do we want to aim for midday or more evening?

Your call. I work until 3am, so I usually sleep until about 12pm, but anytime after that is fine. I have no plans other than this.
-
Congratulations nubbinator!
I know the feel of being unemployed and for a long time and finally landing a job. I had my second shift at my new Job today. Feels good to be pulling in some cash again. You sound like you know how to handle money too which is great!
-
Grats! Me next! Me next! :-*
-
CONGRATULATIONS!!
:thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
I was unemployed for about a year... Mumble, mumble, Stephen Elop, bloody grumble, grumble.... Managed to land a job in June at lower pay grade, but it feels good to be earning again.
Good side of the experience is that I learned some good budget-fu which is helping me to finally save something every month... But then I found GH...
Which reminds me, I should get back to work instead of browsing GH.... :-\
-
Congrats, tho I'm still studying. Eagerly waiting to start working. Although I'm almost certain I'll regret it :D

2 or 3PM? I'd rather it be mid-afternoon.

Works for me. I will plan on being there at 2 so that we can get a table (the place is usually a zoo on the weekends). Any other geekhackers are more than welcome to join. :thumb:
