At the arcade.. $5 per game winner takes all.. is that gambling.. since it's "skill" based.??

What game are you talking about?  If there are any AI types in the game at all, it can be argued that it's not a game of skill, but a game of chance.  Unless it's PvP only games, you'd be hard pressed to have be considered anything but gambling.

Marvel vs Capcom 2.. I totally raked it in this week.. $57.5 profit.. I spent 2.50 on a soda, big group of challengers.. they were there for a gathering for something later that evening down the street.. All scrubs..

My question is with respect to " eyes of the law".. as in, would New Jersey consider what I was doing gambling

Yes, but you try telling that to any asian thats had parents/grandparents that have played mahjong - they call it recreational, or fee to enter the game lol.

dang dude..  according to "Contest of Chance" and "Gambling" as defined...  What I did was gambling..

The problem is "Contest of Chance"  it's quite broad due to this portion "notwithstanding that skill of the contestants or some other persons  may also be a factor therein."

That's kinda stupid since there are no actual game that is completely departed from chance...
