Post by: C5Allroad on Sat, 02 November 2013, 23:07:29
I have some extra cash laying around and am sitting here ready to spend it on my keyboard. So what should I do, I already ordered o-rings and and palm rest.

How do they feel with o-rings?

No, and the same as other keycaps.

It will hard to find backlit friendly keycaps.  You may want to get in on something like this: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=50292.0;topicseen

That seems like a waste of perfectly working keyboard.
[Edit] How long do the stems on keycaps take to dry. I cleaned them today and they still seem kind of wet. I don't want to put it on my keyboard until they are dry.

Change the switches/springs if you're into some soldering.

Nothings better than dousing it in Petrol and lighting the beggar up.  You want to stand there and inhale the smoke/fumes of that keyboard deeply because it's the only way to be a true Geekhack Goon, that's addicted to keyboards 24/7  :thumb: .

Always have a spare, so you can get a further hit later on........

Something that will help with my typing.

All these fancy things are not primarily to help with typing.

Don't believe all the hype about mechanicals helping you type faster its a myth.

Improving my typing had never even crossed my mind.

If you have to get something get one if those custom USB cables with the autocorrect feature.

Buy rice, take off all the caps and then pour the rice on the keyboard, then replace the caps.

That's because you can't wait to feel it from keystroke to keystroke!

You should buy a Poker II as a mod board and start tearing it apart. Build or buy some ergo clears or something and solder those on, solder on some led lights. The stock Poker II caps are really nice so you wont have to buy new caps for it right away.

No, and the same as other keycaps.

As with many things, "backlight frendliness" is a matter of subjectivity, and -judging my pointyfox's response here- much debate. I like imsto's thick PBT over backlighting, and think it looks superb. Sometimes I'll leave the green backlighting on and enjoy the effect.

o-ring compatability is mostly an issue with keycaps that have short stems (cherry F and J keys) and some SP keycaps. I think it's fine with imsto's PBT, but cannot confirm as I've yet to actually install my newly-rediscovered o-ring sampler pack.

You should buy a Poker II as a mod board and start tearing it apart. Build or buy some ergo clears or something and solder those on, solder on some led lights. The stock Poker II caps are really nice so you wont have to buy new caps for it right away.
I would suggest a keyboard without a plate to be a better mod board, as you can change switches, stems and springs more easily that. Try to get a non backlit pure and add your own LED's and "tune" your switches to your preference. The poker II keycaps don't let much light through, so your mileage may vary.

Wait for some cheap double-shot PBT from Vortex.

I don't think that wait is very long...both massdrop and feng have groupbuys for them lol.

if someone could do a review of those DECK translucent doubleshot thick pbt keycaps, that would be awesome.  if they check out nice, i think a groupbuy for them would get alot of support.

Sorry, I was referring to the even newer DS PBT by Vortex posted on their Facebook. They're looking better and better.

Lube and sticker your board, bro. Improve those soldering skills.

I wholehartedly agree on lubing one's keyboard, buy recommended lube and lube your keyboard up. It may most likely make your keys feel lighter to touch without having to go all out on getting a Topre keyboard.

I'm also suggesting this not purely because I want to rub in the goodness of having a Topre keyboard (as much as I would love to ...) but simply because I think there maybe are some beneficial factors if one is on a budget.

How would those change the feel of the keyboard compared to the stock ABS caps?

Well yes that is one thing. But my current setup, my chair is too low and I am waiting on a new one so it's odd to type with my elbow drooping down so low with not support. Not neccearily help persay, but to make it feel nicer.
