Title: Ultimate WalletHack: High Res IPS Monitors
Post by: MsYutai on Tue, 05 November 2013, 16:47:03
I've lusted after these high res (2560x1400, 2560x1600) IPS monitors for awhile, but this one in my opinion is "affordable", but still quality since (I believe) they use the same panel as the Dell IPS monitors.

Check it out... and then start saving!

http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=113&cp_id=11307&cs_id=1130703&p_id=10734&seq=1&format=2

IMO, the ability to rotate between portrait and landscape is really cool. That and the matte screen is nice (since I know some IPS come with glossy). For the price it can't be beat...

I'm wondering how much this baby might go on sale for come Black Friday/Cyber Monday....bwahaha.

Anyone else lusting after these babies? Got your own favorite IPS you've been eyeing? Anyone lucky enough to own their own glorious high res IPS monitor?  ;D

Da **** we're getting into TV size territory now.
That's beautiful though. Can't wait til I can afford one.

I love nice monitors as much as I love keyboards.  The only problem with those Monoprice screens is that they are no-name brands and you can't really read a review before hand.  You just have to take your chances.

You can get 2560x1440 screens much cheaper, just like 1080p vs 1200p.

Not right now... the 3012 is disappointing.. many problems.. rev a03 is no where in sight..

the 27" dell is alright... but honestly it's quite laggy..

I'm thinking about that 27" LG 10-point touch monitor. Tested it out at a Fry's and it seems niiiiiice.

A few years ago I sucked it up and plopped down the cash for a HP ZR2740w.  With as much time as I spend at the computer, it has been amazing.  I look at 1080p panels now, and don't know how I would live without the space.

Yeah I probably should have specified that I don't game too much, I value colour accuracy way higher than refresh rate. That and my Dell's have always been so damn reliable!

OR wait for a PROPER 4k monitor.. probably around $5000

I really don't want a large screen size lol. It's cool for being on the couch and watching a movie but when I'm doing detail-oriented graphic design work it just makes me fatigued. So hopefully we get good Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals this year?

well yea... it matters what you intend to do...

I am waiting for a 4k computer monitor as well..

But it must do 60hz and has 98% Adobe RGB color space..

And hopefully ~$5000... nothing crazy like 10,000...

The size isn't really a "huge problem".. I could always move my table back.

Good point. I would definitely prefer to read some other opinions before I spend so much on a single monitor!
That or see the thing in person, at least.

The only problem with these nice high res monitors is that I may need a new graphics card to go with it!
And then a new desk..

That looks awesome!

I saw that one on newegg, seems quite affordable. Do you have a 3rd party stand for it?
Title: Re: Ultimate WalletHack: High Res IPS Monitors
Post by: Sniping on Tue, 05 November 2013, 22:05:56
There's a VESA mount on the Qnix. The base of the stand is stuck on the monitor and you have to crack the monitor open to remove it but if you have it mounted to a monitor arm honestly no one will notice the stub on the back because it's hidden behind the bezel on the back of the monitor.

I actually had no idea that they sell it at newegg now, but their pricing is too expensive when very reliable sellers on Ebay are still offering their great prices on the Qnix. Greensum has it for $300 right now shipped with their infamous 2-day expedited shipping. But yeah, they're OC-able PLS panels with great color for cheap as hell. You could get 3 for the price of a ZR30w on Newegg right now, maybe even a triple monitor stand for them as well.

I'm a bit over a year on with my Catleap, still liking it, still finding it a bit glossy and annoyingly reflective.   Considering that the 24" 1200p MVA screen  that I had been using started acting up days after I said 'Now I have a new monitor, I'll give this to a friend to use", I'm thinking it was a fair spend of 365.-

Sadily, that doesn't include the price of getting a new video card that played well with it :/

Just to make a condensed list of what to look for...

At least 27",  because this allows you to place the monitor further away from your eyes, reducing eye-strain

Full Adobe RGB coverage, this is HUGE. monitors with full adobe rgb most often look way more "vivid"

___ some monitors claim 100% srgb coverage.. this is only ~70% adobe rgb coverage..

(900+) Calibrated-Contrast ratio @ 80cd brightness,  on large monitors you can't have it too bright.. if you use full brightness it not only turns blacklevels greyish, it also causes eyestrain... remember this is a BIG monitor..

Title: Re: Ultimate WalletHack: High Res IPS Monitors
Post by: IvanIvanovich on Tue, 05 November 2013, 23:10:55
Basically there is no need to care at all about adobe RGB unless you actually use that colorspace for design/photography prepress work. EVERYTHING uses srgb by default. Barely any consumer grade displays are going to be over 85% aRGB. Beside to take full advantage aRGB full gamut you need a GPU that can do 10bit via displayport like Quadro or FirePro, but only certain applications can even make use of it. 100% sRGB is pretty important though.

If you game, I would hold off for a little bit if you can and see what comes of the whole new 'g-sync' thing. It sounds like it could be a very nice feature. To have good performance in games at 1440p+ I would definitely recommend GTX670 4GB or better. I mostly get by with my GTX670 2GB, but for sure wish I had spent the extra for more vram as some games are starting to need it now.
For the most part I've been quite content with my Shimian QH27. These cheap Korean offbrand are not bad if you don't mind skimping on fit and finish.

Hmm... a 24" 1920x1200 IPS is good enough for me at the moment. Best combination of screen size, colour rendition, response and cost at the moment, IMHO. At least until G-Sync is implemented in new displays, although I fear the premium prices that may become attached to such hardware.

I find anything bigger than 24" is too big for a "normal" desk and "normal" viewing distance. Of course I could find a bigger desk if I had to ;)

Using an Apple Thunderbolt display, bought it because I love aluminium and the design.

Not a bad display either, a really good one actually.
Don't even bring up the discussion about price though, design means a lot to me.

a 4k monitor is completely different than a luxury sports car.

A luxury sports car is built so you can "show off"... there is no way it costs anywhere near its price tag to manufacture.

A 5k monitor is different.. they need to make up some of the cost of development, and it's an item you'll actually USE...

And in my case... ALL DAY... 5000 for say 5 years... that's not too crazy at all...   Think about how much your cellphone bill is...  Most people are paying $1000 a year just for that...(http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/070.gif)

They do make 30" models, but the last time I checked (quite frankly a while ago, couple months maybe) most people went with the 27" because that's what everyone else previously bought and has its OC ability confirmed already, the large majority get 96Hz overclocks, if not 120Hz.

There's an FAQ on OCN you can read up here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1384767/official-the-korean-pls-monitor-club-qnix-x-star

You can get the $300 one from greensum, buy a $40 squaretrade warranty for 2 years. That's what I did back when newegg didn't carry them. Still, now that they do, it seems like ebay+squaretrade warranty is still a better deal.

No, it is higher than 30hz, but HDMI's current limitation is that it only has the bandwidth to run 4k at 30hz. Some 4k screens can use two hdmi cables to get the full 60hz over hdmi.

No, it is higher than 30hz, but HDMI's current limitation is that it only has the bandwidth to run 4k at 30hz. Some 4k screens can use two hdmi cables to get the full 60hz over hdmi.

can ^^ that one do it?

I doubt it, but that doesn't mean it is a 30hz screen either way.
