Very limited quantities available! Provides a $15 credit to your next mechanical keyboard purchase at the CMStore-USA.com site as well.
[North America only...sorry guys!]
-
Does this mean we will see some clear switch keyboards in the future?
This seems really cool.
What should I do?
-
Ordered. You know I will try to put a Teensy in this! :D
-
Ordered. You know I will to put a Teensy in this and make the buttons shortcuts to my favorite GH threads! :D
FTFY :P
-
Yeah, it would have been killer if they had made it functional and programmable. Then it would actually be useful still as a launcher or macro pad after making the buying decision for full keyboard.
-
how much is this.

$15 and I'm assuming plus shipping?

Well that's why we added the $15 coupon, so it's pretty much a wash (only pay for shipping) if you decide to buy a CM Storm keyboard from the store. A very fair value :)
-
That's pretty awesome. If I didn't already have a Tipro I was planning on turning into a switch try, I'd be all over this.

No offense but normally the prices on keyboards directly from CM aren't that great ::)
-
Every now and then they have some awesome sales. And as long as you can use the coupon with coupon codes, it will be a good deal.
-
Ordered ! I have an old Teensy floating around here somewhere that I just found a permanent home for :D
-
Will put the order in for one of these Friday. Will make a cool desk toy as well. :D
-
link is not working for me. Are these sold out already?
-
The page you were looking for appears to have been moved, deleted or does not exist.
-
heh was looking at this thread much earlier on my phone and added to cart. Then figured meh I'll do this on my computer so I dont have to type all my info out on my phone. Come to computer later and link is broken, sold out, whatever, but its still in my cart on phone and was able to check out :p
-
Glad I had the item already in my cart as the page isn't resolving anymore.
Went ahead and put my order in, not waiting until Friday!! :D
-
Link was down due to traffic - now out of stock for initial quantity. We're looking at getting more units for pre-order and I'll share more info when its available.
-
Aw, out of stock already :( Was going to pre-order one.
-
Hang tight. First batch went crazy fast but we will have plenty to support everyone the first week of December!
-
Hopefully Santa will put the Topre-MX hybrid switch on these :p
-
Cherry mx clear keyboard coming soon?
-
Any chance to have it on the eu store?
-
Any chance to have it on the eu store?
The European one would just have a black switch easily available, and perhaps with a red and brown switch that is hard to find.
-
Cherry mx clear keyboard coming soon?
They've already made QFRs with clears, so probably
-

One of these would be cool - it looks like a tiny little keyboard :)
A shame it is CONUS only.
-
Dang too late! I had the page open on my computer but it wasn't in my cart so refreshed and out of stock
-
dang all this talk of putting a teensy in it made me want one. as if i need 6 more macro buttons lol.
-

What? Where? When?
You sure?
-
How did I miss this?
I'm browsing this forum before work, after lunch, during breaks, after dinner and before I go to bed.
This is not fair
-
aww. NA only. :(
-
That was fast!
-
Waiting... ;D

Is there still a coupon for the units available on December 1st? Where?
As I mentioned elsewhere, it would be awesome to have a functional numeric keypad which was also a key sampler.
-
Just saw this (http://www.cmstore.eu/cm-storm/keyboards/mechanical-key-switch-tester/) -- available Jan 6th at the CM Europe Store :)

If only there was a CM Australia Store :(

Thank you, this is so awesome... ^_^
-
I was about to say, what a shame it is only available for NA until there was a link to the EU store. I wonder now would there be a chance that it would appear around SE Asia region?
I seriously would hate to order it from expensive ebay for instance where in US or EU they have the upper handed advantage and then they can pawn the prices off as high as they wish for just a key switch tester.
Nonetheless, I am somewhat glad to see that there is such a thing considering how most people either end up reworking keyboards, swapping key switches and/or buying keyboards with other Cherry MX switches in a bid to find a nice and suitable Cherry MX switch for their personal preferences.
-
Ordered. You know I will try to put a Teensy in this! :D
Was just thinking how awesome this would be. Please do.
-
I wanted to order this today and it says will restock on December 1st. But I went to the site and it still have no stock and it's December 2nd.
Did I missed something????
@___@
-
Did I missed something????
Hang tight. First batch went crazy fast but we will have plenty to support everyone the first week of December!
Id say they still have 6 more days. But I am kind of annoyed too. Ive been refreshing the page all day. lol. Last time sold out in about an hour. I think I am going to have to write a program to watch the site and buy it for me when it becomes available.
-
lol sold out in an hour eh? CM Storm need to make that thing part of their regular mass produced items.
I guess I'll have to camp the site starting now too. >___>
-
We have them hitting our warehouse @ 7am tomorrow morning. We will have the item available again at that time.
-
timezone? PST?
-
Ooooo
I see that you guys took the suggestion I gave on re-arranging the switches.
I feel special :3
-
timezone? PST?
I would like to know this as well, this will decide how early I have to wake up. :P
-
But not available in Australia :(
-
did i miss it again? ive been f5ing all day. just noticed the "expected dec.1" message is gone. and now its just sold out.
-
you were supposed to pre order and they would send it today when they got their stock. So they probably sold their stock through preorders
-
Quick update.... there will be plenty of stock for everyone so stressing is unnecessary. Unfortunately I just got an email that due to port congestion we will not be receiving the container until tomorrow morning.
I will post in here when its available but we should have enough available for first couple days of orders.

Thanks for the heads up Carter !
Let's see if we can put the "couple days of orders" to the test. :P
But still only available in America?
I can proxy one for you if you want. Though I don't know how cost effective it is to ship from Canada to Australia. You can send me a PM as last resort lol.

Other regions may be getting/distributing the Key Tester, but this promotion listed is strictly for North America. Sorry for any confusion.

Awesome! I'm still quite new to this mech keyboard stuff – I'm excited to get to test these switches :).

Great price!

Bought 3 :D
-
I really want one but I'm in Israel, is there any way for me to buy it?
-
I didn't even want one of these and this whole time kept wondering why people wanted them so bad.....but then I just went ahead and bought one anyway :P
-
Hey Guys,
If you guys want a few sample switches, I still have a couple of clears left from my giveaway. And since I have browns, blues and blacks, that's enough to give everyone a feeling for clears, browns, blues, blacks, reds and greens too.
Anyone who wants, just PM me with your name, address and tell me what you want. And oh, I also have red and black orings to send if you wanna try them out.
-
Ordered. This will be where I display my favorite 6 novelty keycaps.
-
shipping price to canada was very nice :) that was my big worry.
-
how can I buy this if I am not from north america?
-
why waste a teensy when you can use a digispark?

-
So I can drive six additional LEDs :P
-

Strong with you, the GH spirit is.
Blame me too - I've got one nearly on the way, and I just bought two 4x4 plates from eBay!
And on top of that I recently received by QWERkeys tester!
Gonna need a few more switches ...
-
i think you need a permanent loan of clacks from zenuety :P
-
i think you need a permanent loan of clacks from zenuety :P
Or from anyone!
-
Hey, has anyone tried opening one of these up?
I got mine recently and it was helpful to test out all the switches, but now I'm sort of wanting to open it up and play with swapping springs and such to test out some of the custom mods. I'm just wondering how easy they are to pry open (are there screws under the feet, or is it just compression/snap-together?) and, once open, how the switches are mounted and if they're easily removable?
PigLick
-
I got mine today but had to leave for work, so couldn't play with it much. Looks like there are similar tabs on the top cover to the QFR keyboard tops. I definitely want to open mine up to add some dampening foam. Also my Red and Black switches have some crazy amounts of scratchy friction. I won't lube them, however, will just wear them in over time.
-
:(
Hoping I receive mine tomorrow, as I was one of the first to order. What's up with that, CM?
Also, how do we redeem the $15 off our next order?
-

I've got one almost on the way via a proxy.

If it helps, I ordered mine almost immediately after the announcement that they were available again.
Probably a function of USPS sorting through packages. I didn't know there was a $15 off coupon!

I ordered in the first round that sold out in an hour. Now I'm really mad. >:D
-
I'd check with them about your order. They have some odd system where notifications don't always coincide with their actual order fulfillment status. I've ordered from the CM store 3 times (including QFR covers), and every time I got the shipping notification with tracking AFTER I had already received my order :)

You got scammed jd
-
Is that $15 coupon for the $15 that you spent on this switch tester? If so, then were you supposed to order it again after it just became available? Just trying to put those two together, but lacking details, so I might be way off.
-

What jd is talking about is supposedly by ordering these switch tester you get a $15 coupon of a future purchase from the cm store.
-
I think the $15 is to offset the purchase of a new KB. I don't want to speak for CM, but here's how I would do it:
You are new to mechs and don't know what switch to try. Buy a keytester, figure out what switches you like. use coupon to buy a mechanical kb from the store. you're not out anything extra and everyone is happy.
-
I must be closer to the warehouse or just really lucky or something, I just ordered mine last Thursday (Dec 5) and it got delivered on Saturday.
Do these really look like tiny little keyboards in real life?
Yep, they do. And now my almost-3-year-old has commandeered it for herself. It's her phone/calculator/computer. Useful for switch-obsessed adults, AND fun for the kids!
-

I'm not convinced the attiny can run soarer's code. Or anyone's for that matter. It might not even be capable enough to work as a converter at all. Beats me.

I was afraid of that. I suspect my daughter is going to demand one of her own. I'll just have to try to hide it (assuming it arrives first, which it might not) until the 4x4 switch plates arrive.

Sexy looking tester photo! Mine arrived today, just waiting on my smileys from keypop to swap the clear caps to. I can already picture it disappearing from my desk and hearing my little cousins messing with it when they come over the holidays.
-
I have seen a little confusion. Every single person who has ordered is eligible for the $15 coupon credit.

Thanks for posting those pictures. I was able to get mine apart without damaging it after seeing how the case snapped together using plastic razor blades.

Got mine to sadly the white doesn't click!

Are you talking about the Clear? :)
-
Are you talking about the Clear? :)
Doh! I thought it was white.....I'm such a noob....I didn't pop the cap off..
-
can you actually visually tell a clear and a white apart?
-
can you actually visually tell a clear and a white apart?
yes you can, clear is translucent and white is fully opaque white. It's fairly easy to tell.
-
Got mine today. What did you guys use to get the top off? I kinda scratched up my credit card and it still didn't open. I notice that the green switch on this feels lighter than on the QFR with greens I bought then returned. I didn't like the one I returned because I thought those green switches were too heavy but I do like this one. It feels just a little stiffer than the blue which is nice. Could there be a difference between this green spring and the springs in the first batch of QFRs with greens? I might have to try greens again.

Clicky switches also have raised tiny pillars/nubs on the stems. Nonclicky ones don't. Here's a photo of MX White from Querkeys:

Blues and Greens have those too.

Good thing, too. I was about to rage kill a NIB QFR, just on principle.

Very cool.
Can anyone comment on whether you can swap the individual switch out.
If it is possible, I might get another one and try to find the other uncommon switches like grey, white, etc and have a complete tester kit.
Thanks
-
Seems like the red and black on this thing feel the same....weird.
-
Press slowly! Red is definitely lighter. Also interesting how similar Brown and Clear feel. I used to use Browns for quite a while and now use Clears, and when actually using them on whole boards, they feel quite different. But as individual switches next to each other, they feel remarkably similar, with Clear being the tougher one. Pressing each switch slowly helps. Not that we ever do that while typing.

Yeah the tester is cool and all but I hope nobody decides to go buy a keyboard because of it.....I suppose the blues feel about the same compared to a full size board but that's about it.
-

Seriously. All these testers are by no means a way to feel out what you will actually like/use on an actual board. Like you said, perhaps you can get a slight idea about the sound of a blue switch click... that is it.
-
You still get an idea based on comparisons with switches you're familiar with. Say you've used Blues before--now you can get some idea what Browns are like vs. Blues. etc. But it's true, typing on a full keyboard of switches quickly is not going to be the same. A lot of the switch nuances blend together at high WPM.
-
Received mine as well. Looks good on my desk!
-

While I'm sure that's true, it's about the best some of us can hope for. I've felt blues and browns briefly in Best Buy on a Razer and Logitech they had set up on display, and browns on the Quickfire Ultimate I bought (and used for about a week but didn't like, though not because of the switches), but I have no other way of testing out an entire keyboard of other switch types. So while this tester may not be perfect, it's definitely a lot better than trying to interpret other people's written descriptions of how a switch feels and making a decision based only on that.
-
Id say that this tester is really all i need for mx switches. blues and greens are exactly as obnoxious as I remembered/imagined. Whats suprising to me though is how much I dislike clears, browns and by extension any other color with a bump. They feel like broken switches to me. They make my fingers sad.
-
I do wish they had whites on it, but considering the seeming scarcity of those switches I suppose I can understand why they don't.
I agree with you on the blues/greens kolonel - I like the "snappiness" of them, but the click would just annoy the hell out of me. I do like the browns/clears better than the linears, though. Maybe it's just too many years spent on rubber domes, but I like some sort of feedback.
That's why I'm interested in whites - it seems like they might be closer to the snappiness of blues/greens, but without the click.
-
Just an FYI, this is now available for pre-order in Europe :)

A shame these are not programmable, with a small PCB and USB cable to configure 6 favourite functions (kinda like i3oiler's new business card).

its not such a big deal to add a teensy. I prefer it this way as it leaves more programming options. plus its hella easy to swap the switches as it sits now.
-
I do agree that it can only give a rough idea. I have the keycool mx-blue numpad, and even that doesn't give a good idea of what it actually feels to type on a full board.

Care to explain how to swap the individual switch? From the picture it wasn't clear. It wasn't solder to anything it seems but how does each of them stay in place?
Thanks

I didn't open mine up but I'm assuming they are just stuck in a plate...so just pop them out from the bottom.
-
You can pull the switches w/o opening it. Push the small tabs on top & bottom of the switch w/ a small screwdriver into the switch (helps if you have a loose switch to see what I mean ;)) -- they pop right out.
The main problem w/ adding a Teensy is finding a place to stash it w/o messing w/ the standoffs too much. I think I found a place, the next problem will be to cut the hole for the USB connector. I'll post some pics if I get it to work.

Stuck at home due to snow -- my soldering stuff is at work :( Since I'm bored I took a picture of how I think the Teensy will go in there:
(http://s14.postimg.org/x6ezgj099/MG_0940.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/x6ezgj099/)
Advantage is that everything is together on the same part, makes testing and taking it apart a breeze. The hole for the USB connector on the lower half of the shell will be easy to add, the one one the upper half will be a PITA. The only other modification necessary is shortening the standoff that interferes w/ the Teensy, should be easy to do w/ a large drill since it's hollow.
And yes, those wires are LED's, same as in the testing rig I posted a pic of a little while ago :)

just got this. quite neat. I just realized the ordering technique they used for placing the switches.
also got reminded how great cm does their blue. it's really different than Ducky's style.

No, that seems to be just a breakout board for USB signals (something that could be used to "fix" a USB connector ripped off a controller board.) However, any controller sporting at least 5 available I/O lines (to read the switches) could be used. I use the Teensy because I had one laying around :) Advantage is that each switch can have its own dedicated input and you can hook up 6 LEDs in addition (even high speed PWM driven for brightness control.)

Not many people like those Deck keycaps, but they look great on there!

aww. Don't want to spend $20 on a teensy. Are there other things like a teensy that would work?

yes, but they wont be any cheaper or easier. cheapest option would be to buy the chip, some decoupling caps, and a crystal. wire it up deadbug style.
Ive decided that if I do this, Im going to make it wireless. atmega328p-pu + nrf24whatever in the tester and the teensy+nrf24 connected up to the pc. its too bad all my 3.3v regulators are frikken huge.

These were advertised as costing $15 but that by purchasing one you also get $15 off a cooler master board purchased from their website.....just not sure how to get the discount.
