Title: Backlight-friendly keycaps and with Cyrillic?
Post by: rowdy on Sat, 09 November 2013, 17:41:26
Someone at work asked me the following question, that I was only able to answer in the negative.  Maybe someone else knows differently.

He wondered whether there exists a set of MX-compatible keycaps that are backlight friendly (i.e. let the backlight show through transparent legends, like the OEM Ducky Shine keycaps), that have primary Roman legends (i.e. A-Z in US ANSI layout), and that also have Cyrillic legends (like Ivan's recent GB).

Another requirement: black keycaps.

Yet another requirement (but perhaps optional): that the backlight shows through both primary and secondary (Roman and Cyrillic) legends.

Has anyone even heard of such keycaps?

Never seen it.

If I had seen it, I'd own it, cause that sounds awesome.

Yeah, it could have a certain amount of popularity.

Although the Cyrillic legends are usually dyesub, which does not work on dark coloured keycaps, especially black.  So I think he's out of luck on that score.

Unless it's on some obscure board that I haven't seen before.. it doesn't exist, sorry. If it does exist on some old obscure board then the keycaps will probably be very thick, and so won't be backlight friendly.

That's what I was thinking.

Nearly any one of his requirements - yes.

Combinations of two of them - probably.

Combinations of three or more - unlikely.

Combination of all - nope.

He was on the verge of buying a Ducky Shine too.

Either Razer BWU or one of the Tessoro comes in Russian, but it look pretty ****ty.

But that would be the primary legend?

My colleague wants Roman legends as the primary, and Cyrillic (Ukranian, specifically) as the secondary legends.

They will be secondary.

Oh.. I totally misunderstood what you were looking for rowdy. I thought by 'backlight friendly' you meant thinner keycaps that would allow some light to bleed through..

Also, from that video.. :))

No worries!

At about 4:30 in the video they demonstrate backlight levels, and it looks like the backlighting shines through the Cyrillic legends too!

He was impressed, but said it would cost too much to get one in Australia.

But next time he is in Ukraine, he might look further into it.

Thank you everyone for your assistance :)
