I think OP was referring to the ability to 3d print guns rather than the gun itself. 3d printing has always been a revolutionary concept and resource for the public (think free medical instruments to public, prosthetics, guns, keycaps).

When people ax "does this change anything?"...
They're really only talking about the Federal Laws in place which are not able to keep up with the advancement of HUMAN technology...
It changes nothing from the perspective of killers and victims...
Before a killer kills, he needs a motive, and before a victim dies, he needs to dress in bright colors while walking alone at night, taking shortcuts through a dark unmonitored alley.
Weapons would not CHANGE the number of deaths because the bulk of the COST to killing a person is "generating the THOUGHT" to do so.

Unless at that point, they would be advanced in bio-tech such that they can remove the yearning to have a baby FROM women.. and perhaps not created the womb at all..
In which case... there'd probably be only a world WITH women, because they're more aerodynamic..
AND/Or they might then create a New hybrid that is both as strong as a man.. but aerodynamic as a woman..
OR... we would be able to engineer someone with giant heads.. and extra arms...
OR we would perhaps genetically engineer a medium size "horse human" who could run really fast ontop of having ARMS....

This would cut down requirements on motored transportation...

And sorry if I seem irate. Im just tired of the sensationalist bull**** about 3d printed guns.
That they can 3d print with what appears to be a hard metal and not some lead/gallium alloy is pretty ground breaking (kind of). Who is this of any interest to? Major manufacturers, primarily the automotive and maybe aerospace industries. Does it matter to the man on the street? Not one bit.
That they made a gun isnt noteworthy. Not even kind of. If I wanted to make a gun, I could make one in the same time as a 3d printer, but using only the tools I keep in the trunk of my car for roadside emergencies. This media bull**** is tantamount to a bunch of stupid ass cavemen too afraid of fire to use it to keep warm. Or maybe a more apt metaphor would be "a group of vicious and conniving cavemen scaring idot ass cavemen into being afraid of fire so they freeze to death, leaving more food and sexy cave women for the conniving cavemen." Its all about dem scare tactics to boost traffic and ratings. Muckrakers gotta get those advertising dollars...

It changes gun-manufacturing, that's for sure, but it doesn't change ****s about your everyday gangsta, because ****'s expensive, yo.

It's a good bit of advertising. Nothing more.
a : SLS printers are hideously expensive.
b : producing guns using SLS printers is more expensive than conventional production
c : The original houpla was all about "OMG, plastic guns that can be carried through x-ray machines", this is about conventional metal guns being produced using an unconventional method.

3D printing won't matter until it can make things the same or better quality as traditionally manufactured store bought goods while being cheaper. Big business is TERRIFIED this day will come so they seem to be making a big effort to villainize it early. I mean imagine being able to download the schematic file for whatever you need to make off torrents. It's the first baby steps towards Star Trek style replicators.

-3D printer technology will someday be able to print any non-biological matter into any form.
-3D printing technology will evolve into replication technology capable of transforming any form of matter into another form of matter.
Star Trek predicting the future? Again?
