Title: ☩ Bunny Zombie Keycap ☩ Anyone interested?
Post by: xecut on Sat, 23 November 2013, 07:06:52
Hi geekhackers  ;),

This is Bunny Zombie (BZ) keycap. I designed and crafted this prototype with some modelling clay sticking on top
of some cherry profile keycaps (Thick PBT cap).

For now there are 3 designs, the BZ, the claw and keycap with the BZ initials (and bunny ears).

The reason I posted this thread is mainly to collect suggestions from you guys as well as posting updates about the development.
So, What do you guys think?

If people are liking this, I will start the process of making the mould for it, then cast it with epoxy resin. (probably will set up website and FB page too lol)
And sell it with a reasonable price of course :)) don't worry it'll be cheap

I keep you all updated as soon as i got something new.

I'm planning to do plain colours for now, maybe purple, black...
What colours do you all have in mind? give me suggestions  ;D

But I'll guess i'll be testing/making some bz keycap with multi-colours in the future.

I'd be cool with black or purple because they'll go with everything I have, how about trying to color match the Frank photo above though? Grey would probably show the detail a bit better than black.

Maybe you should test the ears. I suspect they will have a tendency to break off easily, especially if you don't quite hit the escape button correctly and hit the ears instead.

Sorry for the late update guys,
I've been travelling around different places in Melbourne,

But i managed to make a few caps.....

and the sad news is, they're a stuffed up
I'm having difficulties removing air bubbles from the resin >:D

I know the best method is to get a vacuum chamber and let it sit in there for a day. but obviously I can't afford one..
the current tool I'm using is a heatgun (like a hair dryer). It works but not as efficient.

Any tips on removing air bubbles plz?  :-[

Is it a must to have a fill port in my mold? Theres no fill port currently.

***********************

I will definitely try and make some topre caps once i got the skills  :p
And don't have to worry about the ears. They are pretty solid.

I'll will be travelling to Rotorua in NZ for a few days, therefore can't check out this post regularly.
(Hopefully there will be free wifi in the hotel room  :p)

if you used vent/fill ports you would be able to allow your urethanes to vent extra gas.  That would be my first suggestion

Those are amazing man! What's even better, where it's "zombied" ones with missing/broken ears don't look wrong! ha

That is very hard to do. Making a new mold with 2 fillports is much easier.

Sprue location (sprues are what you guys are calling fillports/vents) is also incredibly important.  If you sprue in the wrong place and for the wrong mold orientation, you can have molds that will always have a void in them.

Urgh,,,,

I think I should remold it then... I mean making a new mold. lol remold? is there such word?

So should I add the sprue location on top of the ears then? Thats the best location to put a vent i reckon... :S

Will keep update soon...
Sorry guys I'm pretty busy with my graduation and moving out

Personally, I wouldn't sprue the ears, but would sprue the front side near the bottom or the back, depending on how you like to orient your molds.  Sprueing is a lot of trial and error though and you have to find the locations that work best for you and get the best results for your model.
