Title: Buying scissor switches in bulk
Post by: crm114 on Sat, 23 November 2013, 19:32:11: I am working on a modular keyboard project with some friends. For the prototype we're planning on cannibalizing some cheap boards off ebay, but we'd love to eventually launch the project on kickstarter and so I need to price components. I'm trying to get a quote on a bulk purchase of scissor-switches, but haven't found any wholesalers. In particular alibaba, digi-key and mouser turned up nothing.

Does anyone know any part numbers I can search?
How about any suppliers?

Post by: damorgue on Sat, 23 November 2013, 20:19:07: I actually like them, and a friend of mine has been looking for Ultra X flat ever since they were discontinued so there might be some interest if they can be bought as switches and are somewhat easy to assemble. I am however afraid that they aren't as DIY friendly as MX or Alps.

This looks to me like a company that makes finished keyboards that use scissor-switches. I'm looking to buy the scissor-switch mechanisms wholesale to put into a product that I'm building. Am I missing something. I didn't see any parts listed on their site.

It has to do with the modular design. MX switches need to be soldered directly to a fixed point on the PCB so we wouldn't be able to move them around.

It will definitely be similar, but we're still very early in the planning stages.Unlike the ergodex (with only 25 keys) we're going to be working on something that can be used as true keyboard in addition to catering to specialized functions.

I'd love to know about any features you would want in a keyboard like this. Everything is still pretty fluid

Theese are almost always a "system on a PCB" and not indivdual as such. Try looking for other type of switch. There are many lovely switches besides MX, ALPS and the types mostly featured on GH
