Title: BYOKBD Kit
Post by: sherryton on Tue, 03 December 2013, 21:28:34
I am making a list for Building Your Own Keyboard, so I can make a kit for a good cost.  Let me know if there is anything needed.

Right now, I have the following:

Cherry MX Switches:
Black
Blue
Brown
Clear

Springs
Switch Stickers
Lube
and Stabilizers

The kit should be going for around $80-85.

Great idea! I've been pulling these things together from various places already in anticipation of doing just this. I definitely would've just bought from Originative for ~$85.

LEDs?

LEDs, that is worth acquiring.  Red, Green, Blue, and White for starters maybe?  These should be cheap.

Yes. It would also be brilliant to buy the LED covers as well. On white LEDs, these can project most colors. (http://i.imgur.com/hNFQNpCh.jpg)

Not that it matters, but it's a good photo. I just used the first one I found on the forum.

@sherry
There is a lot of demand for these LED covers here in the West. You, as a vendor, have the ability to purchase mass quantities and resell them to us. It would bring yet another reason for someone to shop at your business. In regards to the BYOK, these LED covers and LEDs themselves can be an addon option.

As a complete noob, I would say that it would also be very beneficial to include some form of instruction manual with the kit.. that way someone like myself wouldn't feel so overwhelmed by the idea of putting a keyboard together. A solid instruction booklet thing would definitely ease things. (or just email some instructional .pdf to anyone that purchases one)  :thumb:

Wish this was out before I committed to a very large group buy!

Sherry, will you be selling the stabilizers separate? Both costar and Cherry variants?

What about diodes and resistors?

Also any plans to offer soldering gear packs? Like solder, wick, flux etc?

Perhaps Diodes will do.  No plans to stock solder.

+1.  A source for these in the US would be awesome.

Of course, these will probably go for $7-8.

It includes 8 mounts for 2 shifts, enter, backspace, 2x 0, num Enter, and 1 of each spacebar (winkey and winkeyless).

If you need a guinea pig for that item, let me know!  I need some spacebar wires but I'm too chicken to bend them myself.   ;D

I meant when it becomes available. Much like how mechanicalkeyboards.com sells Phantom PCBs.
