Title: Where to harvest a Caps Lock without step for a G80-3000?
Post by: spremino on Wed, 04 December 2013, 17:19:36
I would like to buy a Cherry G80-3000, but I'm annoyed by its Caps Lock with a step. Could I harvest a Caps Lock without step from an older or cheaper model from Cherry?

I've seen single Caps Lock key caps without step on sale, but apparently they are meant for Filcos an the likes (and they are ABS anyway, which I don't like).

Thanks.

You either would have to stem mod (cut out the stem and epoxy new one in position) a fulltouch caps lock... or if you have a steady hand you can drill the PCB and move the switch. I've never seen a fulltouch MX compatible keycap with 1.25 offset stem spacing.

Thanks, IvanIvanovich, but a stem mod is not for me  :-[

The Cherry G80-8113HRBUS-2 has a Caps Lock without step (keys for this mod were harvested by one: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=36860.0 (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=36860.0)), but I can't see whether the profile of such key cap would fit within a Cherry G80-3000. Otherwise, I suppose I could replace all the keys.

Finding keycap isn't the hard part... the switch is in different position, so the different style stepped and full touch is not interchangeable without modification to keycap or PCB...

IvanIvanovich, I didn't know that. Thank you.

Well, no G80-3000 for me, then. What a disappointment! The G80 was an affordable way to try Cherry blues.

If you'd like to try blues on the cheap may I point you to this thread?

I need an ISO layout, but thanks for your suggestion.

When it comes to Cherry, stepped is by far the standard. Fulltouch row C caps locks are much more uncommon and only on a handful of models. Pre 1000 models fulltouch row C Control keys were more common with caps lock under right shift.
