Title: The thread about Mixed Drinks
Post by: Melvang on Mon, 09 December 2013, 18:23:53
So we have a beer thread.  While I do enjoy my dark beers I am by no means a connoisseur.  I do however really enjoy my rum.  I only keep one bottle of rum in my house that has a screw on lid.  And that is for cooking not drinking.  I currently have a bottle of Captain Morgan Black, Captain Morgan Private Stock, Barcadi 8 Anos, Ron Zacapa (23 year blended rum from Guatemala), and a bottle of Cedar Ridge non spiced dark rum.

When I was in Chicago for Keycon 2013, the wife and I stopped at an establishment where I had a new drink.  It was called a Dark & Stormy.  On the menu it was listed as Goslings Dark Rum mixed with Goslings Ginger Beer.  Now, I tried to find Goslings Ginger Beer here at home in IA but couldn't find it anywhere.  So I went with the one ginger beer that I could find.  It is labeled at Souix City Ginger Beer.  I first tried mixing it with the Cedar Ridge.  This tasted alright but it was missing something as it is not a spiced rum.  So for the next one I mixed it with the Captain Morgan Black.  I must say this mix was can be described as nothing short of AWESOME SAUCE.

What else have you guys come up with or copied.

That's what the girls drink when they don't want to give blowies.

Oh man, maybe someone can help me out here. I got this Jim Beam Red Stag Honey Tea because it was 60% off clearance but it's like liquid sugar, almost undrinkable at the level of sweetness. All the soda I can think of will just add more sweetness, any suggestions before I dump this down the sink? I was thinking grapefruit soda, or maybe ginger ale? idk

Mixed drinks, aweee yeee.

My most made and loved would be a nice Caesar.  Clamato, Worcestershire sauce, tobasco, little bit of pickle juice, few ounces of cheap ass vodka. Rim the glass with a lot of celery salt. garnish with a lime wedge, celery and some hot beans if they are on hand.

I've always interpreted that response as if the person ate something "sour"

That was my first thought, until my roommate interpreted it as an orgasm and I thought that would be the funnier thing to post :)

I tried this drink in a local rum bar and it's one of the best I ever tried.

With rum, if you want to go simple you can try rum with 7up and citrus juice (real ****, not fake citrus juice). Tastes like summer.

Also, the classic mojito (rum, brown sugar, mint, lime juice and some soda). The important part is to put the sugar, rum and mint first and use a pilon to crush the mint and extract the flavor, then add the lime juice and soda. There must be many variants since it's a classic.

By the way, I prefer brown rum and never use white rum. I like Cuban rum, but I also like the El Dorado rum a lot.

Been a long time I drank some. I must do it soon!

I also love simply mixing spiced rum with orange soda....tastes like a creamsicle. Not for those who dislike sweet things.

I have to many things I could post in this thread...I should stop now :p

that's very similar to a pacific northwest regional delight we like to call the...
PERUVIAN BEAR ****ER

to make, take a pint glass and fill it 1/3 with pabst blue ribbon (important!), 1/3 with orange juice. pour a single shot of captain morgans (important! though some people prefer admiral nelsons, they are foolish and should not be regarded) and drop it in the pint glass. immediately proceed to down the entire glass. congratulations! you're well on your way to deliciously blacking out.
the PERUVIAN BEAR ****ER is the finest mixed drink in the land; in fact, it's the only form of drink mixing i care to partake in unless you count chasing shots of whiskey with cheap beer.
two peruvians in one night is a bad idea (assuming you're peppering between the drinks with beers and shots of whiskey). three peruvians is a feat of incredible foolishness of the best kind. more than four and you might catch the diabetus.

Best mixable alcohol is moonshine. People claim vodka has no taste, but to me it tastes like rubbing alcohol. Moonshine just gives you that sting of alcohol, but no taste. Dangerous stuff when you mix it up with 3 parts orange cream soda and 1 part strawberry soda mmmmmmmm

I would suggest grapefruit juice as opposed to soda. I added ginger ale to Jack Daniels honey one time and it made it insanely sweet ... like cavity inducingly sweet. I cannot even fathom what it'd be like with Jim Beam's Stag Honey Tea.

A few of the drinks I mix during New Years when people don't want the usual champagne:

Sobieski (yes, it does have similar finish and taste to Belvedere at half the cost), Soho Lychee Liquor, Sour Apple Pucker, splash of 7up and garnish with fresh Lychee

If they want something dark:

Smash some blackberries and mint then strain it, Jack Daniels, Peachtree Liquer, a splash of 7up and garnish with mint

Both drinks are quite vivid, a bright green and a deep purple (assuming you strain properly and you don't see bits of blackberries floating around)

Ever had coffee from a Naval ship?  And you thought truckers coffee was strong.  That is a light tea compared to what the Chiefs drink on the boat.

We had a guy that when he made coffee the Chiefs called it Reveille-in-a-cup.

My favorite mixed drink?  A permutation of the classic paloma.  Instead of using Squirt, you use real grapefruit juice.  So tequila (I like Espolon), grapefruit juice, and a little cayenne or jalapeno, and you're good to go.  Such a tasty and awesome drink.  It's good all year round, keeping you warm in winter and cooling you off during the summer.

Usually about 30-40F (it gets down into the upper 20s, low 30s) at night and 10-30F during the day.  Daytime rarely gets lower than the 60s, but sometimes it gets colder.

That said, I was speaking by and large from my time in Seattle where I had more than a few white winters with daytime temps in the 20s and 30s.

I haven't really seen many Uggs near me while I saw a ton in Texas.  Summer was Uggs and Nike shorts, winter was uggs and leggings or yoga pants.

lolwut?

I put a shot of milk in my coffee...mainly because coffee is so hot.

I have my coffee black, just like my keyboard switches.

Mixed drinks - I take a shot of vodka (in a bigger glass), add another shot of vodka, stir, gently add a third shot of vodka, leave to stand for a few seconds, drink, then fall over.

Moonshine essentially is vodka. The difference is particular method rather than the spirit itself. Presumably most moonshine is distilled from corn (although that's not part of the definition), and you can find vodka's made from corn (although less common than wheat or potatoes).

I honestly, for the life of me, don't know why anyone would do that to eggnog.
There was one year ... well, it's been a while. But one year I went through a dozen full gallons over the course of the season. This is the only time they sell it, you know. I know the recipe but it takes more space than I ever have, and I almost never have enough sugar. So, holiday shopping it is.

I suppose if there are any bronies here, you'll know what a speed demon is? NOS (or other energy drink) spiked with vodka and blue caracao. Although fireball (cinnamon whiskey) and wired (really cheap energy drink) work well enough too.

As a poor college student I pretty much mix sprite with everything.

Evan/Jack + Sprite is surprisingly good!

Me and my roomate in the service used to drink the Mountain Dew MDX mixed with Vanilla Smirnoff Vodka with a splash of Absinthe.  We called it the Green Geek.  My wife can vouch for the name.

I am still torn on what kind of rum would go best with egg nog.  I do usually prefer a full dark rum but I have a feeling that a clear rum would go best.

They used clear rum with it.  It was REALLY cheap rum too but they said it was awesome.  Malibu would probably be a good choice

I still feel the best way to drink rum is with on ice, or cut the top off a coconut (preferably a fairly fresh one with soft meat and more milk), pour in the rum, enjoy.
