Title: Marble keyboard?
Post by: jonathanyu on Tue, 10 December 2013, 01:46:43
Today I get my marble wrist rest, and I really like the feeling of marble.  And I have saw this picture on filco website before.

So I start thinking, current custom keyboard are mainly made by plastic, wood, and metal.
How about a full marble keyboard?  And maybe marble keycaps?

I also think it will be expensive.  But I think it is possible because if you search marble engraving on Google, you can find some crazy engrave work.

Price is most likely why there isn't a marble keyboard yet  ^-^

Considering how much I like the solidity of a good steel plate ... I assume a good stone keyboard (but would probably want zinc keys not stone ... probably) would be enticing and a great item for the elitists to say "hey look, we have WAY more money that you!

Which would only make all the rest of us want it that much more, right?

But a stone plate. I dunno. Seems likely to be brittle. Also, don't drop it.

ever.

There are artificial marble available.

But again, price is still a problem...

I suspect that most varieties of marble wouldn't be reliable at that thickness. Not as brittle as many rocks but too soft and weak at that thickness to be practical. Marble is also very porous and stains easily. Besides, it's been done. I saw Fred Flintstone typing on one 2 million years ago.

I'd like marble if it stays cool.

But I have marble countertops and you have to clean them for grease constantly because otherwise they ruin. But you aren't cooking next to a keyboard, are you?

Actually I'd prefer it if it was slightly heated.

My hands are the first thing to get cold in winter, and the last thing I'd want to do is rest them on a cold marble surface (keyboard, wrist rest or whatever).

A warm wooden desk is nicer.

When my hands get hot they start to sweat and the board gets all slimy and gross. I'd prefer a cooler keyboard. But the good thing about marble is if you start heating the house, the stone also gets hot but albeit at a slower pace

You need one of those keyboards that blows air on your hands as you type to keep them cool.

Fans get too cold....what's good about stone is its pretty dense and heat doesn't move through it that fast

Marble can be machined, so it's possible. But it is much harder to machine than say aluminium, it requires diamond cutters afaik, so it would be far more expensive to have made. I don't think you'll see it happen any time soon.

Hydro dipping would work wonders!
