I returned to that game for a while not because I'm an addict but because I wanted to optimize some gaming technicalities for fun.
I want to put my hands on the keyboard in way that do not hurt when using alt as a modifier together with the keys 1,2,3,4,5 that are also on some other actions (when alt is not pressed).
The smartest way I heard so far is the following: Place your hand on keys u,h,j,k (querty) for movement (or another quartet in that close vicinity), then use keys 6,7,8,9 for the main actions (or something very close to them), then press the right alt (instead of the left one up to now) for modifying and keep space for the 'jump' action (even if I thought of mapping alt to space and vice versa optionally, to keep the modifier more roomy). Any ideas?

Use keybindings and remap them however you feel is most comfortable.
I don't play WoW, but I do play SWtOR and I bind my abilities to the keys all around the movement keys. I use ESDF so I have QWRTAGZXCVB bound and all within easy reach along with Left Shift, Ctrl and Space (although I have now switched to using my custom keyboard with thumb buttons which is even better).
If you really need Alt, you can use Autohotkey to remap CapsLock or any other key you like to Alt. Or you could bind a mouse button to Alt.
