Post by: Air tree on Mon, 16 December 2013, 13:16:50
Hey everyone, I was looking for a good set of keycaps for my Poker 2 and i think i want these http://www.originativeco.com/collections/keysets/products/classic-beige But i was just wondering how is the quality of this set? Or should i spend 30 more and get the PBT and dye sub version?

Thanks.

Cherry/GMK (what you linked to) are the very best quality in doubleshots. BSP is top tier in PBT (which is PBT originative carries). I say they are both equally as good quality, just a matter of material preference in feeling really. One thing to note though with BSP set is the caps lock is only available in stepped and the modifiers only available in 1.5 size, neither of which are compatible with Poker.

+1

IMSTO is the place to get 1.25x PBT mods.

$100 for doubleshots are too expensive IMO

Compared to what? A set from Signature plastics is going to cost around $60-$70 mark and GMK caps are WAYYYYY thicker.

Well they are still ABS plastic-made. And they will get shiny

I've found I don't shine caps fast at all. My GMK purple mods with black alphas still look brand new after about 7-8 months of use.

People talk about shining but considering how many old cherry sets show little shine I don't think its such a problem with GMK.

But shouldn't they essentially be the same keys? Give the GMK sets a few more years...they will shine up nicely :P :D

I think it has to do a bit with the texture, I find the texture on GMK finer than on SP.

I was referring to old cherry sets vs GMK since they supposedly use the same machinery...

Right GMK same molds/tooling as Cherry. It's pretty much impossible to tell one from the other. If you gave me a sets of NIB 1990 Cherry and 2013 GMK same colors and legends I probably couldn't tell you which was which.

Yeah I worded that poorly but that's what I'm getting at, I think it would take a pretty long time to shine up Cherry/GMK sets. People just think they don't last long because they see old Cherry boards with heavy shine but they forget that those boards were most likely being used for data entry so they'd be getting hammered every day.

I bought a cherry board that was used at a retail clothing store for a very long time and the only shine I noticed was on the spacebar and it really was not that bad.

Try giving them a clean man, it's probably just oils from your fingers.

Shine from finger oils and shine from wear are two different things man. If he's shined up his set in a month he must have caustic fingers.

I hear this a lot, it looks like they are oily, but they arent, its acually wear on the pastic.  Trust me I have tried cleaning them.
