Title: Am I the only one that does this?
Post by: C5Allroad on Tue, 17 December 2013, 18:29:54
When I go away from my computer for any amount time I put the keyboard roof on and turn off all the leds.

Overnight - yes.  Home keyboard while at work - yes.

For a few minutes or lunch time etc. - no.

I cover my ducky at work every night and keep the hhkb in its bag when not in use.

I turn off the LEDs to not waste power when I'm not using it. When I am, it's usually just on WASD and the normal arrow key lighting.

Ah, I used to but then I got custom cases that those plastic things don't fit on. Slowly over time I stopped giving a ****, now I don't even use them on boards they fit on. In all honesty, my boards are none the worse for wear so I concluded it's pointless. A light dusting with whatever's lying around works just fine for me.

Once the novelty fades, there's really no point in babying the thing..

I realized this years ago, so I use the heck out of anything I purchase from day one..

What exactly am I saving my keyboard from.. or for?  The day that there's no more keyboards... LOLOL....

Yea, I don't even own a keyboard roof. And I don't put my other keyboards I'm not using back in a box either. I leave them out on my computer desk or wherever. If I put them away I'll never swap them out and use them all. Sometimes a keyboard will catch my eye and I will impulsively switch it out.

If you did the keyboard cover thing twice a day, 5 seconds each time, 365 days a year,   it would amount to 60 minutes.

that's $7.25 at minimum wage..   which buys 48Kwh of power

@ 5v 0.5amps USB 2.0,  the $7.25 buys you 19,332 hours of continuous keyboard power.

2.2 years of continuous keyboard power.

so... No, the power saving is not significant.

What is so special about a DT-35?  Shouldn't you be more concerned for your blue one?

But it's not much about how much you can pay for, but how much you can save. Ok, saving some leds time on your keyboard is minimal, but if you do that, you probably save a little elsewhere too, all for the good.

Can't talk too much here, not that I don't do my part, but more that since electricity had a low cost for so long where I live that people are used to waste it. Like we use more electricity than New York and we are a 7 millions people province ... Ok, we have winter (real winter), but yet.

Exactly, if I'm not using it then why do I own it. Unfortunately I do this with everything including collectables, and have been scolded on numerous occasions when people see stuff like my Uncharted 2 limited edition with knife holes stabbed into the box and a broken Phurba dagger.

Where I used to live was very dusty.  After a couple of weeks there'd be a visible layer of dust over everything.

So I got into the habit of always covering computer equipment that wasn't turned on/didn't need ventilation.

Where I live now is much less dusty, but I still cover most thing.

I put keyboard roofs on all my keyboards at night, and when I go out for multiple hours. I also dust them everyday. Can't stand seeing dust on black keyboards, which is why I tend to prefer white keyboards.

Exactly this...our office is awful when it comes to dust....one guy's office has a return recirculation vent for the entire HVAC system and his laptop crashes about once a month and we have to open it up and clean the dust out....I've never seen a computer collect that much dust in such a short time.

one thing I really hate about modern tech - almost everything is black. And almost everything soon gets visible dust.

you can't see dust on white or light gray furniture, which allows you to be lazier.

I put keyboard roofs on all my keyboards at night, and when I go out for multiple hours. I also dust them everyday. Can't stand seeing dust on black keyboards, which is why I tend to prefer white keyboards.

But black is anti-stain. All depends on which you feel like might be an issue, wouldn't you think?

You can - the black surfaces attract the light coloured dust, and the white surfaces attract the dark coloured dust.

Keyboard roof?

No idea it was called a roof but... The roof is nearly always on my second computer/keyboard (a Model M), which I rarely use.

No roof for my main keyboard that said: does it even exist for an HHKB? Damn... Apparently it exists. That's it, now I want one.

Thanks GH  :o

I have a 'brilliant' idea.

Some manufacturer should come out with a keyboard casing design that looks like a total mess.

That way, it is black dust proof, white dust proof, and stain proof.

Introducing the new dust proof keyboard! The new design allows it so that the owner won't even notice or care about dust!
