Title: [IC] X-wing inspired keyset
Post by: Matt3o on Thu, 19 December 2013, 02:30:10
Please consider that this is just a draft, of course I need to make a full keyboard yet, but I'd like your feedback regarding an X-wing inspired keycaps set.

Something like this

some of the keys (eg: ENTER) might be even in Aurebesh.

If you offer standard grey WASD and standard Windows keys I'm in. Don't even buy SP sets anymore but this scheme is sexy.

Especially like the slightly darker keys to represent the punctuation keys, surprised it's not done more often.

both WASD and rebel logo are optional (ie: you get both variants)

if we can't use the logo we will just remove it, I guess... or make it subtle (eg: make a more astute reference to starwars without using logos).

also the GB would be named "rebel starfighter" not "x-wing" :) The trick is to not place direct reference to SW.

You could even try making a legend of the rear view of an x-wing - instantly recognisable to fans but not likely to suffer complaints about licensing.

There's only one small problem.

No Porkins key? What the hell? I say we should have a Porkins key -- just the text 'PORKINS' -- maybe stacked "PORKINS RIP"

If Matt3o could elevate this Group Buy to cover at least a TKL then I'm in.  Star Wars was so cool when I was younger plus the characters from that flick will forever be immortal  :thumb: .

Don't just design key-sets for 40% and 60% tiny keyboards.  Not all of us are under 4 foot like R2-D2.

Nice.  But please only offer the WASD as a possible option only.  I would love to see grey there.  But the Red Number rack is cool, but need the associated symbols as well (again could be an extra option).

It just seems to remind me of Honeywell, a little too much........sorry, but I had to say it.

GMK doesn't do custom legends to my understanding and/or IF they did it would not be at all feasible. And the multiple colors will drive up cost immensely.

As stated over on Deskthority this set needs a genuine Vader / Stormtrooper Key!

+1 for optional 100$ Esc key :p

(I know this doesn't fit the rebel theme, but hey it's Star Wars!)

To make this set truly awesome, someone should try to weather these things. In the SW universe, the X-Wings are actually kind of outdated and rundown for their time. Is there some way to grunge this set up somehow, apart from putting the keys in a rock spinner for an hour? Dyesubbed legends, but maybe make the legends rougher, somehow?

Just an idea.

Look at the X-Wings in the photos -- they're refitted, fixed up -- but are still a little worn around the edges -- but that's part of their charm! How could we do that with this set?

EDIT: Looked at it again, and I can see where Matt worked that element into it; the multiple shades of grey, the multiple shades of red, etc. I see that now. But can we go further?

that rebel key prob wont be allowed by SP lol
it should also be Red, as the Rebels/New Republic don't use black logos for their stuff.
maybe instead of scrlck we can have that as "Shields" and windowed since most keyboards have LED on that key?
And Windowed Numlock for "S-Foils"

Yeah, just be careful because old Georgie is a pure zealot when it comes to protecting his enormous cash cow, which is the whole "Star Wars" franchise (he's already a BIG, fat, greedy pimp - why make him even richer?).  I suspect he's got better lawyers than what Apple has on call.

Unless you decide to have the Key-caps made in China with Imsto's help?  Not a direct demand ONLY a subtle suggestion to help avoid any possible 'sticky' situations, like here in the evil West  8) .

Damn, selling it all over to Disney just to grab more moolah, how much do you really need to earn in life, several billions or what?  Plus George is already old, how many years has he got left to enjoy all that treasure?  I suspect every virginal Girl in the US and abroad are making a be line to his front door (maybe 4 or 5).

If we decide to go with this, vote one for having it made in China to avoid any extra profiteering to Disney Corp. :thumb: .

If you want to use the graphics from the film, then what other way could it be done?

With China, it's the last country on Earth beyond control of the evil money-grubbing western 'capitalists', hence easy to make things that would be impossible to do anywhere else.  That includes key-sets such as yours.

I would be happy with dye-sub but like you said, no white legends available.  But if you're only stuck with dark coloured ink, then you make sure all the graphics count on some of the keys.  It could be done perfectly to catch the approximate idea of a Jedi or Sith Keyboard  :thumb: .  Although having an all black Sith keyboard - would be to die for.

Yeah, ignore my idiot suggestions, simply because I just realized how stupid I sounded here.  This is YOUR Group Buy hence choose what you want to see.  I know you're not some newb and you've designed great key-sets in the past, so I know you'll do good yet again.

Just don't take to heart idiots such as myself, because we actually don't know what we're talking about - half the time.

The colour-way you've chosen is fine, just add that little extra to a couple of keys and see the rush happening  :thumb: .  Make sure Disney doesn't try to cripple you though.....

well with SP these legends won't be made because SP's afraid of copyright issues.

You could always do doubleshot for the main set, and if people aren't going to piss and moan about mix materials (unless you can convince SP to do PBT doubleshot full set) send only few keys with SW logos to China for dyesub.

That would work.  Extra stuff to manage though.  Split all of the 'questionable' legends into a separate kit... maybe it could/should be treated as separate buy, but run at the same time? Linked-buy?  I guess that would be up to Matt3o.  Sorry, I'm rambling.

Thank you HoffmanMyster for pointing that out here, I completely forgot that this is a homage to the Rebel Forces, which is a great shame, - we need more Sith in the Galaxy  :thumb: .

working on this (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=52615.msg1169730#msg1169730) right now that should be easier to accomplish.

X-wing set needs more attention. I'll contact SP regarding licensing issues and let you know.

Loving everything bar the blue return key! Really enjoying seeing some sets with the different number row, looks great in some color schemes.

If Melissa can guarantee all the colours then this will be an exceptional key-set.  Even the non-star wars heathen's should go with this colour-way.

Just a suggestion: because this is SW IV (i.e. old school SW) I'm thinking these need to be deep dish sphericals like 7-bits recent honeywell (is that DSA??), but that's just a thought.

Matt3o : I love this idea!!! Just as I thought I was getting out of SP (although I do still have a Redline/Druger order paid-for and notoriously unfulfilled and a set of blanks to come along with it). Nothing I add here should be interpreted as criticism... just as suggestions. This would make a great gift for a friend of mine who is nuts about SW. But if this goes DSA I'll buy at least two because me likey.

I can't imagine you're going to have any problems making MOQ.

Packages I'd love to see:
- WASD in both alpha colors and gaming-colors.
- Blank Win and Menu mods in mod colors.
- Numpad
- +4 R1 keys (TrikX, ducky, etc.).

The R2 and C3 thing puts this over the top for me but if the normal caps were there also that would be remarkable.

thanks for your feedback, really appreciated!

This set will be definitely in SA profile (the same as Round 5, DSA is also spherical top but low profile like the soon to come Macross set (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=52615.msg1173551#msg1173551)) for that extra retro feel.

I'm adding more options to the mix (more mods, numpad, wasd, etc...), but first of all we have to understand if SP is willing to produce such a thing that may involve some copyright issues.

Time for a bit of star wars geek time
The rebel alliance logo (which you've put on the set plan) suits the theme very well, its the first thing that came up in my mind when I see X-wing

other then that what pops in my mind is the Jedi Order logo, since luke himself fly one of the X-Wing
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Jedi_Order
(and you've already tested it out)

What usually goes with Rebel Alliance logo is the Galatic Empire (Sith) which the Rebel tried to destroy
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Galactic_Empire

edit: and maybe this would help you to decide on the colors
http://www.brickset.com/news/article/?ID=6398
its a review on lego x-wing which shows which colors lego used to replicate

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Galactic_Empire (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Galactic_Empire)

You see Matt3o, you NEED the Galactic Empire Logo, without it - why do the Rebels exist in the first place?  I knew the Sith had to be included in this you can't ignore them (despite all the Jedi Council completely missing the Sith Lord in the first place - nice one, Senator Palpatine  :thumb: ).

I always thought how lame the Jedi order was, particularly the so-called GREAT Yoda (stupid green midget-clown) in trying to track the very threat under their own noses.  That is why the Sith rule in plain sight.  They don't need to have a "council" or order, they only need 2 of them a Lord and an apprentice.  Goes to show how powerful they truly are compared to the limp Jedi's.

I wish they tried to make a movie describing how the Sith and Jedi's were first organized.  I suspect the Jedi's were always scared of the Sith due to the immense power they can wield.

YES, I'm a Star Wars fan from way back, but over time I now harbor great amazement for the Sith and their way of life.

When Darth Vader was presented, that individual sparked the flame for the SITH.  Hence you can't have one without the other.  The Sith became a realization later in the trilogy but the Empire had existed in the FIRST film which was Emperor Palpatine''s creation.  You have to give recognition to the Empire, without it the Star Wars Saga couldn't exist.

You're trying to make a key-set without giving due credit to the whole creation and maintenance of the story line without the Empire.  You need to present the regime and it's significance.  Without it - the Rebels wouldn't exist.  Don't make it a ONE line praise for a single side when there are two sides to this.

#### UPDATE:  When the book was originally released there was a passage describing the interior: Rebel blockade runner -- main hallway.  "The awesome, seven-foot-tall Dark Lord of the Sith makes his way into the blinding light of the main passageway."  The Sith has been mentioned..... enough said.

well, if you see this set as an x-wing "replica" there's no reason to have a sith logo. instead we could make a second GB for tie fighter (or something) which includes dark side iconography. If we want to build a general purpose star wars set, well in that case we could use a vast plethora of symbols.

Maybe the latter is more realistic.

I'm with justnits, very happy to get either sets from Star Wars as long as the logos look authentic and real.  If you're going to copy then make sure they look exactly like the originals (ask SP if they could do that first).

One aspect I really like about this concept is the focus of this set.  Like the Macross/VF-1s (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=52615.0) set, it's about one specific element, and taking the feel of that and translating into colors/scheme that can be recreated in keycaps.  I'm not opposed to having the Galactic Empire/Sith logo in one of the add-ons... I'd totally buy an ISO kit just for that.  I guess I'm just saying keep the focus on the X-Wing feel.   If all goes well, then next year consider another matching/opposed set from the Empire... besides Ivan (http://geekhack.org/index.php?action=profile;u=10346) already has his Aurebesh/Darkside (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=50935.0) set going on until mid January...

On another note, I'd still be interested in this set even if it contained NO logos that SP could object to.

Anyway, thanks Matt3o, I'm really looking forward to this, and the VF-1S...

You have to congratulate him for trying to keep this Key-set design in our minds for the longest time.

It's up to Matt3o if he will consider finishing it off for the rest of us to enjoy.  OF course let me put in my request for having this latest key-set done all in SA Profile to mimic the control boards within the X-Wing fighter  :thumb: .

I don't mind DSA if it's done right.  But I already have lots of DSA's in my possession but I do indeed need more SA profiles because they're just to beautiful to ignore.

Old school sci-fi needs old school profile, Galaxy set was only tolerated in dsa since the Star Trek screens were flat  :D

I'd buy this in SA.
How about uniform R3 like Nuclear set (sorry if already mentioned before)?

Only have one problem with it.  It isn't using Aurebesh for the legends.  If it did...I would buy it regardless of the profile, the material, etc.  I might even buy it if the keycaps were made out of cardboard...

You want LOVE, then be prepared to drown in a swimming pool of it.  THIS key-set should happen in an SA profile using those colours and you'll have half of Geekhack creaming themselves for it.

You know you want to do this Matt, giving us our deepest desires concerning the X-Wing  8) .

You better get to start loving the Star Wars series because this set reigns supreme for all the fans out there.  An X-Wing is just too good to pass up here, but then again being an SA-ho means I'll take anything coming out of PMK which has this Golden Profile  8) .

Title: Re: [IC] X-wing inspired keyset

Doubleshot PBT is very rare because PBT is a very stiff material to work with and it shrinks a lot more than ABS as it sets, making inset doubleshot layers extremely difficult to get right without gapping or cracking.

And I'd be fine with either SA or DSA for this set, either would serve the retro-ness of the X-Wing well. :D

God-forbid NO  :'( .

This HAS to be attributed to STAR WARS X-Wing Starfighter because it was my very first decent star fighter developed in my early teens.

Matt has to get these made soon AFTER the Retro set is cleared because I shall get at least 4 complete sets of these if Matt's design hand has been over these babies  :thumb: .

Please consider that this is just a draft, of course I need to make a full keyboard yet, but I'd like your feedback regarding an X-wing inspired keycaps set.

Something like this

some of the keys (eg: ENTER) might be even in Aurebesh.

Don't care if they call me the necromancer. Gonna revive this thread because I love Star Wars. This may be the end-game keyset for me, tbh. And a sweet BB-8 (or R2) artisan? Color me orange.

Please don't let this die. I know you're hard at work at other keysets, Matt3o, and with the Topre set taken after Skull Squadron, hopefully this is in the back of your mind.

The official answer has been a repetitive no. Have a look at the classifieds and at the DT's marketplace.

That was my understanding too. I had thought for a moment that it may be reborn by jumping on the SA bandwagon. I can wait until people burn out on that profile and worship it like it's any better than cherry or oem.
