Title: LEGO Therapy
Post by: kmiller8 on Wed, 25 December 2013, 17:35:30
Thanks to my Secret Santa, I'm addicted to LEGOs...

I don't know how much I'm going to spend, but it scares me to think about it z.z

I mean... just look at this...

The amount of effort that went into designing the set, and writing the book alone, makes this such a beautiful piece of work.

I mean, when I was placing this part, I said "wtf is this even supposed to-OMG IT'S A COVERED WALKWAY" and now I'm going to collect the entire Architecture series ,____,

I just ordered set 21010 Robie House, that should be a blast to build.

We have a tub somewhere with god knows how many. It's more the fact these are such beautiful and well designed sets. I can't resist their charm ;___;

I got some Lego kit for my cousin and was blown away by how crazy expensive they are now. Used to be you bought a big bucket of Lego's and built things from your imagination, now you pay upwards of $50 for a handful of specific pieces to build some tiny licensed vehicle from a movie :(

Ah ha, they left out the small bump in the roof just above that interconnecting passage/building area.

Joking aside... I like how they managed to get the texture of the windows by using those grille/grate pieces below the smooth pieces of the roof... that's some attention to detail right there.

From the stackexchange:
"The fit will likely never be as tight as real legos. Those are tough tolerances to match. Lego Corp are (i've heard) the masters of injection molded plastic"

That's one reason I don't want to waste time trying to print plastic building bricks that aren't compatible with anything except themselves, in which I should just print the entire model already assembled instead of in pieces.

I know it's possible, I just don't want to do it.

Thanks for that - pretty much as I expected.

It is great how closely they can model something using standard blocks that small.

But kinda like the Lego Minecraft - I would have been all over that if they use the standard sized figures as Steve, instead of a couple of 1x1 blocks.

So I went to Toys-R-Us, their collection was both 1. Pitiful and 2. Overpriced. I grabbed the only two that were at MSRP while waiting for the other three sets to arrive in the mail.

Burj Khalifa is pretty pitiful of a model tbh...

Wow I didn't know this thread was here.  Will have to get some pics uploaded of mine.

One of these days I will have to dig out this one I have in a box (http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Millennium-Falcon-7965).  It is currently sitting in a massive state of disassembly due to moving twice since I built it the first time.  If I remember right it was about an 8 or 9 hour build but I really want that death star and the super star destroyer but they are both in the $400 range on the lego site.

A while ago I posted a thread about Lego and which sets to get. For Christmas my brother generously offered to buy me a modest set (~$30) so I started off with a Lego Creator (31006) set simply because it seemed to be the best bang for your buck (pretty decent block to $ ratio and three different possible models), and come on... cars. Guys love cars. Afterwards I decided to dabble in Lego Starwars and picked up the AT-RT (75002) and then soon after bought Saesee Tiin's Jedi Starfighter (9498). I'm actually possibly going out on Thursday to buy another set but I'm still debating what I will get. Right now I've been buying in store at Toys-R-Us but will probably try out bricklink in the near future.

After seeing this thread I thought it would be relaxing (therapeutic perhaps) to throw together an older Lego Architecture collection kit.
Made it look like an old/vintage magazine clipping since that's how I remember this building for some odd reason. I've got the Guggenheim Museum one sitting around somewhere too that I should throw together. They have just been sitting in boxes for years along with a number of other Lego kits.

It's very relaxing to do something this mindless every once in a while. It's the 3D equivalent of painting by number except you end up with something that fewer people are repulsed by. Something about white noise busy work that lets your mind move in different yet useful directions.

[attachimg=1]

For those that don't know, it's a house called Fallingwater and the architect was Frank Lloyd Wright.
This model is kinda neat in that you can remove the small roof and each floor. They slide easily and thoughtfully apart. Or you can remove the whole building as one unit. If you know nothing about the original house, I highly recommend looking it up. It's quite interesting.

Now for my next mindless trick...
falling asleep, Zzzz...

Literally one of my favourite pieces of architecture, something about having a constant stream of water flowing right through the house just seems so nice.

If I may I would have to recommend getting the Back to the future set, although I have not built it yet after having it a few months it does like very nice I just lack the space to put it wish I could have some of that tardis tech to make my room lager :I

Also on another note the Lego Movie sets are out currently which also look great, as well as the minifigure line, and although it may seem odd do sign up the the free lego magazine as they often give away free things to people who visit the lego stores :)

This is my absolute favorite Architecture set and it'll be the first one I get for sure.  I went and saw the house a few years back and it's one of my favorite buildings ever.  It just feels so...right.  I would love to have a house even half as cool as Fallingwater.  Thanks for sharing, CC.

I mean its a really good idea it probably keeps the kids away.

Edit: Also..like vun said below...its a one time fee...

Yeah, but a one-time fee when you sign up is a way better solution. Won't bring in as much cash, but will bring more people, but still keep a lot of kids and trolls at bay. Seems to work for SA.

in my experience, my local stores (Toys-R-Us/Wal-Mart/Target) all have sets listed $5-$15 above MSRP.

I buy from shop.lego.com, amazon.com, and ebay.com

lego will have every set at MSRP, but a lot are usually OOS, amazon will not have many if any sets at MSRP, but the Prime shipping is nice, and eBay has everything from old, retired, overpriced sets, to "new damaged boxes" for 60% MSRP.

The one I bought was from Amazon and it was 10 dollars below MSRP, if I remember correctly.  So there is always the chance that Amazon will be below.

Haha I just found this thread today thanks to SpamRay's sig.

Several years back, I used to collect a lot of sets+parts and build my own stuff.  It got to the point where I ran out of space to store the sets and parts, and where it became a real chore to keep parts sorted by type and color.  I haven't done anything lately except buy an occasional new Star Wars set.

Watch out if you are one that gets the collector's bug easily, though.  Collecting sets and parts is addictive and expensive.  Sets go out of print after a year or two, and if you build your own stuff, you'll be buying specific sets just for particular parts and colors.

If you are going to buy a lot, it really makes sense to join the LEGO VIP club.  For every $1 you spend (at lego.com or one of the lego stores), you get a point, for every 100 points, it's a $5 reward, and they now offer free shipping on anything over $75.

It's hard to find bargain lego.

Amazon has discounts on sets once in awhile.  Technic 42008 Service Truck for 24% off now:

Also, Technic 42009 Mobile Crane is 21% off:

Back to the Future Delorean set is 20% off:

I never really got into Technic sets, but many of them look pretty damned cool with a lot of actual working mechanisms.

Well I certainly had a blast building it.  It comes with a really nice instruction booklet that gives some history of the architect and the building that's fun to read.  And I haven't built a Lego set in years, but it's basically just like any other set, it gives directions and you follow them.  Nice and relaxing.

Collection has been steadily growing.. I've gotten pretty much all of the lower end star wars sets at my local stores... So now I'm heading into the big boys. Hilarious thing happened when I was buying a set at Wal-mart (it was an impulse buy). Picked out a ~$100 set and brought it up to the counter. Had a nice chat with the sales clerk and he was like "Oh cool, lego is awesome," and then he rung it in and said in the loudest possible way "but holy crap that **** is expensive!" I kind of gave him that "I know, but I can't help it" look in response. Anyway, pics will come when I end up transferring them from my camera.

Ya I've got the same problem, much more creative when you have a lot of sets to choose from but can no longer put the individual sets back together. So I now just have a lego crate from my childhood all mixed up.

As far as creative freedom goes, don't forget K'nex.  A friend of mine and me in high school built a 3 speed transmission with K'nex using one of the 2 AA battery motors.  We then rigged it into a bridge and used it as a fixed position crane.  It would life a 16 oz. claw hammer, and a one foot long crow bar at the same time.  Granted we had it geared down enough in low to the point where it took a hlf hour to life 2 inches but it did it.  This was all done with zero instructions as well.  Complete with 2 shift levers.
