Title: Ergodox Backlighting
Post by: Misterorjoe on Sat, 28 December 2013, 23:00:25
I saw here: https://github.com/jalli/ErgoDox (https://github.com/jalli/ErgoDox) that the ErgoDox can be modified to have backlighting, but could not find any other info on that. Has anyone done this, or know of resources I could find on it?

I had already read through all that. So has no one actually done this then?

Interesting, would be nice to see a new GB or Massdrop with this updated layout. Appears to be mostly done although I am curious about cooling the 'high power' smd led, I feel like the brightness required to properly light a whole keyboard is going to need some kind of passive heatsink.

Edit: Looks like the LED specified in the parts list is mounted in a ceramic housing and that is all it needs and it appears to be plenty bright to light a half keyboard per LED. Very interesting.

I am interested... an Egdx.. with Handwarming feature.... HMMMMMM   like seat-warmer in cars.

I can't believe that no one has any info on this. Is this not where the keyboard was made ? Lol

That repo is a fork of the main project and is only a month or so old. Might be worth trying to get ahold of the person doing it on github to see what is what. I am looking for an ergodox right now, I would be down to GB a set of new PCBs with some people if this thing is production ready.

Have you had a look at AcidFire's Nexus project? http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=44940.0

Still in the design phase, but it's a good step more advanced in terms of ergonomics and customisability. It's gonna be a good 'un.

I'm the guy doing the RGB Backlight for the ErgoDOX, been off the grid in Panama for the last 2 weeks and unable to respond or work on the project.

I've been posting progress reports int he ErgoDOX thread, you can see some pictures and the current status here:

Not sure, have not made much progress in the last month due to personal issues.

The hardware design is pretty much ready, I have not had a PCB made since I fixed the last set of issues but I think it should be OK.

I'm about half way done with modifying the tmk software to allow it to speak with the LED drivers via i2c.
