The search is  lot better than it was at least.

We really just need more people putting time into the sites code, nobody with access has much time it seems.

I kind of wish the search was better .. Maybe I'm missing something but I would like search parameters eg. Search Topics, Search Posts, Search Members Topics, Search Members Posts, Search All, Search by Month, Week, Day. That kinda thing. The more options the better.

EDIT: I see others have voiced their dislike for the search while I typed this

Well to be fair. I don't think I've ever visited a forum where the search was amazing. Or maybe I suck at looking for what I need.

I think it's mostly that people are too lazy to click the search button at the top...

Yeah, it's easier for people to complain about something rather than try to find a solution.

Yea, I stand by my "better search" request tho. I would like to be able to type in the by user field "*demik" with no keywords and get all his posts from newest or oldest first.

"Did you forget to put something to search for?" - No, I typed in demik.....

I realise I'm being a little crazy, but searching a users posts just in general with no specific post in mind seems like a useful parameter.... especially demik  :thumb:

After returning here from being on another extensively moderated forum I think the only thing I've noticed is a some threads can turn a little unnecessarily salty with strong opinions.

On a technical side I dislike quotes that nest. It takes up too much room and would be better to at least show a 'display quote' expand button. Quoting only the direct user is ideal.

Same here. In response to some previous comments, I for one do not think the search feature is all that bad compared to other sites btw. It is like the messages section, the functionality is there, but what you see and how it handles by default is kind of messed up.

I really have few negatives about this place. Regarding the community, I have met one or two people who were really intolerant of others, but as a whole, the people I got to know a little better have been really cool. If there is anything else negative, it is that I am kind of burned out on trading and collecting keycaps because of some recent events. But that is more of a personal thing than a critique of the site in general.

Back on the Search thing again, since I'm learning so much. Is there a way to get to someone's account page without first finding them in a thread they've posted in? If not, then again I stand by my request of having that as a search parameter. If there is, please feel free to make me feel even more stupider. TEACH ME TO GEEKHACK!

Ok, this is probably just me... but whenever I click on the 'last post' thing... I actually want it to take me to the last/latest post... not the point in the thread where I last stopped looking at it... sometimes I guess that's nice, but most of the time, no I really actually want to go to the LAST POST... and not have to then wait for the page to load (if I'm mobile) then finally click down to the last page, then scroll.  Maybe some setting where I can change that behavior?  Or is there a setting and I just don't know it.

Even though this is a perfectly acceptable method, its still so silly. For convenience, It should just be its own thing. "Search User Accounts"

Maybe this belongs in the rant thread now  ;)

I'd prefer going to the last actual post, too. A 'view first unread' could always be added for the former style.

I have changed my settings to have the 1st page of posts to be the most recent and then going backwards.  This means that the OP is the last post on the last page.

I have found this to be helpful for navigation and may solve your issue for you...

On a technical side I dislike quotes that nest.

Quoting only the direct user is ideal.

Quoting only the specific sentence(s) or phrase(s) that you are commenting on is best.

Speaking of quoting... This multi-quoting option SUCKS. What the hell is it suppose to do anyway? I've used it once and it brought one of the quotes into a completely different thread.

I hate it when people push their personal keyboard preferences on people when they ask for something else. You see this much too often.
For example, a poster creates a thread asking for a "good full-size keyboard with Cherry MX Blue switches" ... and he gets replies like "Get a Topre!" and "Buy an ErgoDox!". That's trolling, and moderators should keep repeat offenders on short leash.

I would like better mobile support.  I am using TapaTalk on the mobile, but there are things about it that I don't like.

He use to be here about a few weeks ago but now ......nothing.  I suspect the admins here might of done a 'Ripster' annihilation-style of execution but the guy was only a rabid MS lover and nothing else.  Never offended me in any way so why the overwhelming neglect in mentioning what had happened, almost like some kind of secret conspiracy of complete silence..... :( .

fleeting sense of community

I will say this: as time goes by active communities grow thus expanding the borders of comfort. GH is no exception, and even more so since the rise of popularity towards mechanical boards has grown in recent years. Yet the internet offers few choices of niche forums to discuss and share on this subject. I don't think the sense of community is fleeting, but instead adapting to a myriad of situations. Imagine you've lived in a small close-knit town all your life, but suddenly new people start moving in and buildings start going up. It's upsetting, but nothing can survive indefinitely without adaptation and it's up to the older members with sway to at least try to guide everything in an amiable direction

I think the community aspect is difficult, as this hobby of ours is "quite" a solitary thing to begin with.. especially considering it stems from eletronics/ computer obsession, which is only a hobby taken up by Hermit type characters.

Maybe we should split off and become a 24/7/365 Thorpe forum?  thorpe-hack.org?

I can guarantee no tp4 at thorpe-hack.org.

They do, unless you uncheck the checkbox.

But, if you uncheck the checkbox, it stays unchecked.

If you check it again, it should remember and stay checked next time you send a PM.

There is drama here but I think it livens the place up a bit. Admittedly, sometimes things can get a little out of hand. On the plus side, drama has insighted passionate responses on certain topics. It offers a unique insight from an individuals point of view.

It's like panning for gold -- you sift through dirt and muck but occasionally you hit the jackpot.

Also another technique for searching the site is to use google. For example, if you want to see the miami set, just google this :

miami set site:geekhack.org

Of course search notations can always be used as well like :

"filco" + "blank keys" site:geekhack.org

Normally the first example gets me most of what I'm looking for. I hope that helps someone  :thumb:

I've checked there and 'Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic.' is already unchecked, yet I still receive notifications via the 'Watched' section of the site.

Is there a specific setting elsewhere?

There's nothing I really dislike -- but I would love to see an integrated wiki-like area. I would love to see the forum automatically link words like "mx green" and "topre" to their respective wiki entries. That would be awesome. The only thing I dislike are the rants about "greed" and the generally low level of understanding on how markets work. Also, I am tickled when I see people complaining about the immorality of producing fake clacks but then openly discuss which Chinese printer to use for putting copyrighted imagery on keycaps.

Generally, though, GH is very awesome. Make a "what do you like about geekhack" thread, and it will explode with replies.

We already had a Wiki but there was little content and it was apparently a pain in the ass to maintain.

I think the previous wiki likely failed due to a lack of sso and the steep learning curve of its markup language.  Both are nontrivial problems to solve.

I don't know what 'sso' stands for, but I agree that the wiki failed because it was difficult to to learn. That's being solved by switching to a bbcoded series of threads. When I say 'wiki' I don't necessary mean an actual wiki -- just some way to store information. Also, no one has yet made a boob-shaped silicone keycap. What's up with that?

sso = Single Sign On.  Sorry, tech acronyms are not always obvious.  The fact that you could not sign into the wiki with your GH credentials and needed to have another account and such is what I was referring to with the 'sso' comment.

More difficult to scour through for relevant information, but it is much easier, for instance, to just go to your unread posts and see when it's been bumped, or if a particular person you know is selling.

I tend to stick to GBs that are run by people I know (of) and trust. I took a chance on sprit, but things are moving along nicely and he fronted his own money to keep the GB on schedule.  He has been awesome so far and not at all shady which is saying something given the language barrier. I am excited to build those boards.

ah, about sprit, how awesome he was, after seeing alixinhzai doing some housing for the BeastMask pcb (which he sells in GB), all the orders from Vietnam never get invoices and so, no words, no explain, no replies on VN order, what a great man

The thing about GB is that when you see many people in GH participating, you tend to trust the GB person. Is there a way for mod or someone to specifically say that this is a new GB by this new person, so handle with care - then it is up to the person whether to trust and participate and all.

Not at the  moment.  Group buys are not geekhack-regulated.  They are run on a "caveat emptor" basis.  There's no way to guarantee that any given person/group will run a group buy well or not, even out of the blue.  People with lots of posts have suddenly gone MIA in the face of pressure from dealing with group buys.  Everyone needs to decide if it's worth it for them to join and decide how much money they can stand losing (or be prepared to argue with paypal within 45 days).

Remember that this is primarily an information exchange website.  Group buys and the Classifieds sections are just perks.

Yeah and that's why I'm pretty much reserved to only participating in GB's with members who've succeeded in the past or where they can actually show samples of the finished product. Too many examples of members getting all excited, starting GB's and then bailing when the real work is required.

I dislike it when a seller adds new items for sale to an old FS-thread. If you have new stuff, create a NEW thread for frak's sake!
I will not visit an old thread with items that I already know that I don't want to buy, but I don't want to miss your new items for sale.

Add to the same thread. Update the title. Bump the thread. I think that's better than new threads. IMO
Not better. Just easier for the poster ... only because the poster is lazy.
For a prospective buyer, it is more difficult to see what is for sale .. and that also lessens the chances for the seller to get his stuff sold.

Sometimes you can see an old re-re-reused FS-thread that has all its original items edited away from the first post, with new items added have several pages of post that are not relevant to the first post at all, just taking up space, being a burden on the board and on the users that try to find out what in the thread that is new.

While this would be the logical solution, the end result is that new people coming in that haven't searched are instead met with long-term participants saying "use the search" and usually in a very grumpy way... which is quite a turn off for new people.   Really... it happens on every forum ever, because : path of least resistance.

Ideally the first thing a new person might do is check the FAQs/stickied threads/Wiki (or the deskthority wiki :P ), but what if you're not in the right section... you might not find something like the Simple Questions Simple Answers (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40501.0) thread... and once you find it... its 190 pages... 190.  At least CPTBadAss (http://geekhack.org/index.php?action=profile;u=23841) has a great TOC as the first post... but I imagine the thread could use a little cleanup.

As to repetitive questions, I don't really have a solution, but telling people to 'use the search' never seems to work out well.

There might not even be a technology based solution... well... ok, maybe if we build some sort of device to allow for world domination and then we could release a tailored airborne infection that triggers a genetic alteration which makes people think for themselves before asking questions they could probably have found for themselves... but that might be a few years off.

In one newbie thread asking about Code vs Filco, I provided a brief view and advised the op that he could get a better and detailed answer if he searched the forum as the q appeared in a few threads. I think that's as gently and not off-putting approach that I can think of.

Totally agree, it's lazy, and a bad way to sell.

TBH, I don't even like the "clearing out" threads where you have to look inside to see what's for sale - if you can't fit the item(s) in the thread title, use more threads!

On balance, I think it's better to have more threads that can be easily assessed by their title, than fewer threads that can't.

Classifieds threads should focus on the items, not the seller.

First, I'll start with what I like about GH:

1. Its about 10% useful information, another 5% nostalgia

What I don't like:

2. heaps of e-peen

3. obsession with 'clacks' and related crap make the board feel like an AD&D gathering

4. endless circular debates about finding keycap/board materials to make cheap Cherry switches feel perfect ( a lost cause)

5. can't take a thread off the watch list once you've replied to it

As far as the discussions on switches.. the differences are mostly irrelevant.. as long as the switch preserves 2mm actuation.. they all work the same in the end..

Maybe you should stop reporting people and canceling bids and expressing your belief that poor children should work for their food, unlike yourself.
Or you could do all of the above. Probably why you have a post-reporting timeout.

With the number of shady sellers around here recently, you'd want to get in 60 valid constructive posts so that people get a feel for your character.  There is likely to be some suspicion of low-post members trying to sell stuff after a few recent bad experiences.

I think the only thing I hate, is that slow climb to 60 posts for the Classifieds thread. I guess the reason I hate it is purely because I don't want to spam or post useless crap so I'm stuck only commenting/posting when it's actually useful or a genuine comment :P so it's taking its time! :D

give me ur account information... I can have you up to 100 by the end of the day.. with legit posts, not spam... (http://www.emotasia.com/wp-content/uploads/totally-naughty-panda-emoticon-2.gif)

Haha sounds nice but as Rowdy said, with me aiming to be in Classifieds, it's probably better my posts have a genuineness for people to get to know me :P, heck I need to get round to doing a new members post and tell everyone how I come from an e-Sports background and found this website through a fellow gamer at LAN :P

5. can't take a thread off the watch list once you've replied to it

You can.  There's an 'unwatch' option.
too bad that it doesn't work for the "new replies to your posts" section.
