I'm thinking of getting one of these refurbed nintendos with mario/duck hunt, a controller, blaster and of course a copy of tetris and I should be good. I can even hook it up and use it in my wifes van.

Buy the v2, aka NES Jr
The front loading console has issues, and tends to destroy the pins on games because of it's design. This is the reason why so many NES games had to be 'blown' to work.

well not sure how legit it is but this one ebay sellers has refurbed and added a different kind of slot that supposedly addresses that issue....

My grandmother keeps her SNES hooked up for when I come over. The setup hasn't changed since I was kid!

A link to the past or donkey kong is plugged in usually. I'll try and get a pic of the setup later! :P

just buy the controller.. and the usb converter.. and play emu..

playing the original console is a huge bother...

if you play emu, you can use a computer CRT, way better than your TV,

you also get fast forward through stupid unskippables, and save states for obviously repetitive puzzle situations.

Not to mention auto fire for strategy games where you can spam attack and mine exp off random battles..

For example on SNES, you can program ur character to run in a circle and to auto attack..  This way you can turn it up to 30x speed, and leave it for a few hours.. and ur character is all leveled up...

they make PC light guns compatible with the emu ??(http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/victory-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862523)

The Dreamcast was ahead of its time. Poor Sega...

Ray, skip the NES and go for a SNES. They last forever, and the games are just as fun, with better graphics. I still have all my classic consoles, and the SNES is still my favorite. There is a reason why most of the games in the Wii arcade are from the SNES era.

Soooo, light guns don't really work on flatscreens. Just an FYI
Any light gun that's later than the Namco Pointblank model for the PS1 wasn't made with the curvature and scanlines of a CRT in mind.

also, emulation can never hold a candle to the experience of playing on the actual system. Save states are for pussies.

mmmmmm..... ur diving into personal preferences now...  if you consider the certain tedium and shortcomings of the orginal console   invaluably part of the nostalgic experience... ok, but that doesn't mean the PC emu isn't better in every USEFUL way..

And the lightguns on PC have many different types of sensor.. some use inf-led, some have multiple ways of sensing, and will work with ANY screen type..

i used to have a copy of the official nintendo players guide and a bunch of the comics with thick covers that they put out on valiant. some of my favorite memobrillia.

if i'd kept half the video game related **** i managed to accumulate from thrift stores and garage sales as a kid... let's just say within a few days of ebay auctions, i could probably buy a decent used car.

I still have my original NES, games, controllers, blasters, and of course the worthless floor running pad.

It's probably just better to emulate the games at this point.

I do miss my gold game genie. You could have mario jump over the flag at the end and run for infinity.

I actually would like to buy a few original controllers and mod a wiimote in there.

My first videogame system! I had over 100 NES games! My dad kept the system and we sold all but about 25 games too.
My mom also had one with like 5/10 games and my little sisters grew up playing it too.

Awesome system!

I have a little retro gaming corner with nes, snes and n64 attached to an old tv. also a lot of gameboys are laying around there and tons of nes games. And I have many gameboy games in their original box. I sadly don't have that much snes and n64 games, cause the prices for the good games are much too high. Thinking about buying a flashcard for the snes and n64.

I don't like emulators... It's just not the same feeling...

i don't got an NES as i was still in Taiwan during that time.
I do have a Famicom though =D
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/72/Famicom-Console-Set.jpg)
its in the basement in the Styrofoam box that it came in, i think i need to find an RF adapter though.
I remember it used to use the old RF Adapter that had the 2 flat U shaped prongs on it.

I also have a fully working SNES (USA 1st gen model) and an N64.
Both have the pegs drilled out so it can play imported carts.

honestly i did it when i was in middle school haha
i just took my dad's drill and put a drill bit to the system and just went to town.
didn't even tape off the cartridge socket or anything.

If you don't wanna drill anything out, you can use a Gameshark.
since you put the game on top of the gameshark, there's no need to mod the system itself.

Enjoy the NES ray.  I still have all my old consoles, except my OG green-and-darker-green Gameboy (replaced it with a GB Color, which I still have).

I played a ton of NES, but SNES was really my era growing up.  I still play through Super Mario World once a year or so, most recently with my son.  I was literally unbeatable at Super Mario Kart back in the day.  Like, my friends literally could not beat me at GP or one-on-one racing.  Battle mode was different, but I still dominated. :D

So many memories of playing Mario Kart and Donkey Kong Country into the wee hours during sleepovers.  Link to the Past, Super Metroid ... I'm just noticing that my all-time classic favorites were all produced by Nintendo itself.  What godly game makers they were during the 90s.

Fun aside: are you guys aware of Super Metroid speed runs and sequence breaking?  Some of the most amazing balls-out stuff I've ever seen, much of it doable without tool assistance.

So turns out Tetris and Super Mario are still awesome. Now I've got to find an old TV to play duck hunt.

my neighbors just threw out 2 old 27ish (i think the size) crt's... where everyone picks up trash, like mining for gold, these tv's sat there for days until collection day, no one wanted them. i actually forgot how big crts were, i looked at it and thought "no human could carry this home"

also **** nes.
blowing on the cartridge. then
blowing in the machine.
then using qtips
then putting the game in, locking it down and "wiggling" it back and forth
then get back, punch the nes and all fonzie style it works!

to this day i punch machines when they fail... never have the same fonzie nes magic.
