A deep-felt 'Thank You' from me to you for making that happen.

I bought my M122 thinking that all 122's were Model F's, so there was a small let-down that I didn't have the biggest and baddest. That is, until it arrived. The IBM Model M Terminal 122 key keyboard is no slouch. As the IBM guy in the shop, they already think I'm off my rocker. A 20 year old keyboard solidified their feelings. I had resolved to eventually get 'the big one'. At that BIN price I had to act or kick myself later. I'm still juiced up on adrenalin.

I hope it's not the same three. The seller responded to my message and said that it's $29 vs the $23 I already paid to ship to California. One of the neutral comments is about a $35 brokerage fee on a $300 server to UPS. That wouldn't be the end of the world if the formula is 10% value plus $5. If the seller was 50 miles south this wouldn't even be an issue. Sigh. At least Quebec feels like a foreign country and not someplace we share a country code with.

No, that's buckling spring over membrane. The tell tale for a Model F 122 is the painted black steel underbody.

If you look lower on the page it says it's an M. Don't know how they found out from the pictures, but some M and F are very similar for the 122 key layout.

even without the picture of the bottom plate (plastic) and the connector (modular), you can tell this isn't a model F by the keycaps: I don't believe they made a model F with these keycaps: I've not yet seen one. Look specifically at the blank keys above the tenkey and the function keys on the far left.

Sometimes, if they use a flash, you can get a look at the plate under the keycaps. In this case it's dirty enough to obfuscate if it's metal or plastic. F plates will likely have some corrosion.

Finally, you can sometimes "see" if there's a plastic bottom plate clipped to it by looking very closely at the front edge. many sellers will have a picture at enough angle to make that determination, though this one does not.

If you got 2 intact F-122 cases you should consider yourself extraordinarily lucky. Of the 8-10 that have passed through my hands, only 1 was "near perfect" and only about 2-3 were unbroken.

The very earliest M-122s (look at the back and legs) had the same case top made of the vastly better "M" plastic case material, and can be installed directly with about 60 seconds of Dremel work. Trust me on this, and forget the "purist" need for originality if you intend to actually use the keyboard.

My strong recommendation is that you look for one of those, mod it to be your "prime" beige case, and paint or mod the inferior original "F" case with its brittle plastic.

My above quote was referring to the top shell of the case. Of course you will want to keep the black metal pan on the bottom.

Also, if you get used to using it naked, you may not want that giant plastic thing on your desk after all, anyway!

Hmm. I never thought about getting a better case and modifying the worse one... My idea was basically to add lock lights (via internal teensy) in the flat empty space above the numpad which means there is some drilling and carving involved. I'd like to keep the beige for now, but still keep the option for future painting available.

I have painted (actually used Dupli-color) several F-122 cases with excellent results. I suspect that paint will stick better to the F plastic than the M.

I took your advice and snapped both up a few days ago; still waiting for them to show up. Can't beat that price, and if they're as immaculate as the photos look...

One's going to be left as-is with an external Soarer's converter; the other will probably get an ANSI mod. I have a super clean old-style M122 (With the F-style dual level button-release legs) ready to donate its top case, if needed, and the roughest of my four Model Ms is ready to donate keycaps to the cause...

If I were in your shoes, I would swap the M top shell with the F. There are about half a dozen plastic alignment tabs (vanes might be a better word) that are just a little too big. With a wire cutter or Dremel you will need to clip out (or grind out) notches about 5mm square from the corners where they touch the internal plate and prevent the case from closing completely.

You only do about half of what wcass went through to do a newer case, and don't touch the F-122 metal.

I consider the Model F case plastic to be inferior. My experience is that it is harder and more brittle, and far more likely to crack in the corners. Also, there is a shiny substrate that appears to have a textured "skin" finish layer on top. When that layer flakes off, the substrate shows.

The Model M plastic seems to be softer but tougher, and seems able to withstand more stress without cracking. And although it can be abraded, it does not seem to have a different layer that can come off.

It took them 12 days to get here, but that's forgivable given that they were being shipped across an international border. Packaging was great - both keyboards wrapped approximately 3x in the larger size bubble wrap, with a few extra sheets of bubble wrap inside a pretty heavy-duty carton. Zero damage in shipping, although I did have to re-seat one spacebar (the stabilizer had slipped out of its supports).

The boards are near immaculate, they appear almost unused. I'd say they must have been NOS, except that each of them has a small blemish - the one from April has a teensy crack in the case under the spacebar; it has been fairly cleanly glued up and nearly escaped my attention (This board is also assembled with some sort of security torx bolts, with a post in the middle? Never seen that from the factory). The November board has some small abrasions to the plastic that expose the substrate underneath, like Fohat describes can happen with these Fs.

Mine also came today; I should have bought two. Then I wouldn't have to decide if it goes to work or stays at home. Mine looks exactly like yours and I cannot find a single crack; super clean. There is some white crud on the plate, but no rust. I unplugged the M-122, plugged this one in and away it went.

My M-122 weighs 6.2lb, the F-122 8.8lb and my laptop weighs 5.6lb (cheap luggage scale). The spacebar doesn't feel particularly heavy. It got passed around the office and I had to caution folks to "use both hands" as it is deceptively heavy, considering that I've had the M-122 at work for a few weeks.

Unlike the PC/XT and AT model F kbs, the 122 has a similar spacebar mounting as the rest of the switches, so it's not any heavier.

Even though I'm very pleased with the keyboards I got, I probably would *not* buy from this seller again. In this thread (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=53586.0), the same seller lists some AT Model F keyboards for sale, with a photo of a computer screen displaying an image (what??), and a photo of an AT that he stole from Kishy's website complete with watermark. Someone must have sent him a message, because he replaced the photo... with a photo of an XT keyboard, rather than an AT.

Seller seems really sketchy, rarely posts photos of actual items.

I paid top dollar to h2gofast a few months ago because there just aren't that many around.

As I have said before, they often come in multiples because this was not a "personal computer" keyboard.

Me: "Just to make sure, the keyboards I purchased have the silver IBM logo in the upper right, correct?

I noticed that you have a listing for an English keyboard (IBM 1392595), but with the same image as here, so I just wanted to confirm that I purchased what I was intending to purchase (all of the keyboards have silver logos in the upper right)."

Savesys: "Hi i have difrent Pn for same keyb but we have 6 available with the IBM stell logo
do you want english keyb or french keyb can do ?"

Me: "I only want the ones with the square silver logo, no matter the language. I assume those are the ones I bought."

Savesys: "ok yes i have the ones with the ibm square logo silver"

I also thought all of mine were to be French given the listing, so I didn't bother asking for any specific languages thinking that they didn't fully understand my question when they asked what languages I wanted. I also noticed how they said they had "6 available with the IBM stell logo" so I figured these were the only silver labels they had so I made sure I got them and not something else.

I'm only satisfied because I wasn't very picky when I bought the boards. This is a very sketchy seller for someone looking for something specific. On an up side, they know how to pack. My boards came wonderfully packaged in plenty of bubble wrap and a couple layers of cellophane to prevent keys from being lost if they popped off for some reason.

None, but I have two F-122s now and am not longer in the market ;D. If this guy has some real deals on rare stuff in the future (an unsaver?), maybe I'll eat my words and risk it again... At least I know they'll arrive undamaged; seriously impressed with the shipping/packaging.

An aside, that M-122 I photographed with the F-122s was purchased for a very reasonable price from h2gofast. That said, it's a miracle the board arrived undamaged - it was wrapped in a trashbag, which was itself stuffed in a too-small USPS box, with no additional padding.

Edit: I ordered the third keyboard from the original listing, before the seller relisted 3 more. If anyone got 2 Model F's and wants to trade for this Model M, let me know. Yeah, I know that's probably not gonna happen. I contacted the seller, but I'm not very hopeful.

I guess I am going to eat the $28 loss on this one (for return shipping) and send it back to the seller for a refund.

Did you buy it through ebay or on the side? If through ebay you shouldn't be eating anything.

Actually even on the side the seller should have the decency to pay for return shipping if the item is wrong. What did they tell you?

I went through eBay, and used their resolution center. They replied that the seller would issue a full refund of the original purchase and shipping price, but I had to pay for the return shipping myself. I guess paying $28 for a bad deal is better than having a $78 M-122. I don't think the M-122 would be worth the that to me, since I already bought one of those from fohat.digs not long ago.

The seller didn't send you what you bought. You shouldn't be out a dime. If you paid by credit card, stop payment. By paypal, file there.

Man that sucks hard. I was lucky to get an F. But I also bought the AT model F from the same seller (the one with the picture from Kishy). 2-3 days later the picture changed for an XT. I sent a message to the seller telling him that I had no interest in the XT to prevent any unfortunate event. The day after he canceled the sale and refunded me. At least it didn't turn out too bad, but yea even if I am super happy with my F122, I would double check with this seller before buying anything else form him.

Well, I replied to the seller again using eBay resolution center for the open case. I asked if the seller could pay the return shipping charges, since I don't feel I should lose money on a transaction where I was purposely sent the wrong item. I'm not exactly hopeful, but who knows...maybe the seller would like to prevent negative feedback from me.

I don't think Paypal would be much help, as they are owned by eBay. I paid with Paypal balance, so I'm pretty much at their mercy on this one. Unfortunately I don't have any credit cards.

Ebay/Paypal will usually side with the buyer, and when a seller lists an item there are choices that he makes relative to handling, such as turnaround time, whether or not items are returnable, who pays return shipping, etc.

I think that you have a strong case here, it is not a question of condition (item was listed as "Excellent" but it is barely "Good") or (seller said it is working but I say it isn't) since you clearly received a different item than the listing showed.

If I bought a Black and Decker circular saw and received a Black and Decker jigsaw, that is not a minor discrepancy.
