Title: Poker 2 with iPad (3rd gen)
Post by: synerr on Mon, 13 January 2014, 08:25:47

Does anyone have first hand experience with using a poker 2 with an iPad, preferably 3rd gen.

Searching around there are reports of success using the camera adapter for iPad with indications that at some point some ios update throttled down current draw from the iPad making the Poker 2 unusable.

I just ordered a Poker 2 and will test this out for you when I get it, if anyone else doesn't get to it first :)

EDIT: Removed note about Lightning connector, saw that you and I have the same iPad

Thanks axtran.  Fingers crossed.

my poker 2 is in the mail, and i plan on using it with the ipad air.

From my research, the camera kits used to put out 100mw ( 100 something of power, can't remember it exactly ) but IOS software limited it down to 20whatevers.

if you plug it in and get a "device requires too much power"

there are 2 solutions

1. Chain in a powered USB hub, simply put the power gives the ipad hub more power to use the device

2. Use an UNPOWERED hub with at least 5 ports. reason being, the ipad can see that htere are now 5 ports, and will supply 100whatevers of power to the hub ( via software ) and your plug in item should then work. (though depending on the power draw of the poker 2, if you plug anything else along with it it may not work )

Not the prettyest solution, but it should work. I'm currently using my QFR with my ipad with no problems or need for a usb hub, but poker 2 probably won't go that smoothly. My poker looks to come in late this week if i'm lucky ( left hong kong today )

Though from what I understand, it looks like you'll be needing a hub to use a poker. I've already made a 12" sleeved cable for my QFR to use with my ipad, so I'll probably find a compact hub and somehow clean it up a bit where it does not look like I have a mess of cables attached to the ipad. My poker will exclusively be used for my ipad, and its a bit more portable than my QFR and a 60% is perfect because IOS won't recognize the 'insert, home, page up/down, or end buttons )

Any luck?

Yeah, you'll have to use either a powered or unpowered usb hub to get the poker to work, and i don't know of any jailbreak mods to get more power output.

Meh ... I suppose if power draw is determined by iPad, it should be possible to mod cable to draw power from a portable usb charger to run poker.  Not an electronics guy but shouldn't that complex a matter.

Maybe cut Vcc from iPad side of cable and put a 1k R to draw, say about 5mA, then poker side solder in a usb socket that goes into the regulated battery and short GND together.

Ideas?

Could be possible, I'm thinking of doing something similar msyelf.

Its a project i'm going to start this week, though its not really modding a cable, more of stuffing a usb hub into the poker.
