Title: God, I really need a new monitor...
Post by: Folio on Fri, 17 January 2014, 13:58:03
TL;DR > Need new monitor. Considering BenQ XL2420TE or Asus VG248QE.

I've been slowly replacing all of my computer peripherals with new things since I was a kid (everything's been hand me downs from my Papa such as Dell stock mice and keyboards gross). Last thing to go is the monitor. I'm just lazy and haven't found the time to research it till now because I'm finally fed up with it.

I am currently using a Samsung 23" TV/monitor hybrid kind of thing, I'm sure you know the type. I'm not gonna go through all the downfalls of this monitor. All I will say is that it's terrible, at least for my needs (GAMING). So I need fast response times and refresh rates. Color is great on it, but I could care less about that. I don't even think it has a dual link DVI. (I'm at work right now so I can't remember the model name. Forgive me.)

Anyways. I was thinking about buying the BenQ XL2420TE or the Asus VG248QE. I'm leaning more towards the BenQ, but please advise if you have any experience with either of these monitors or have any suggestions for other monitors made for gaming. Again, color is of no matter to me although it'd be nice to have better options for it. Response and refresh rates are more important. Currently, my set up is a quad core i7 ivy bridge processor (4.0 GHZ). 8 GB RAM. SLI Nvidia GTX 560Ti. I'd say I can play a lot of games at max level graphics, but I've never checked to see the fps I can get on them. Most of the time, there's almost no lag. I've heard that if you want a super high refresh rate such as 144Hz, then you have to have at least 144 fps when playing. So I'm not sure if I should get something like this, but I'd still rather have the capability over my current Samsung. Any help would me much appreciated.

I'm not sure which monitor it was but one of the newer high hz benqs was reported to have MUCH better color than their asus equivalents and honestly, I'd say that's worth the extra money you'll spend. If you really don't care, get the asus. I got one for 200 something and it's well worth it, especially if you're just after the refresh rate.

Edit: Just double checked, I have the the VG248QE and, like I said, have fount the color pretty disappointing. Need to tweak a bit more to see if I can get it a little more accurate.

Almost all these monitors have good colors with Proper calibration.  They're all rated up to sRGB..

Lightboost is far more important.. the difference is so dramatic that it's like... "Life has begun anew".

I don't game, so for me, 2 nice-sized, mediocre monitors are better than 1 great monitor.

1 for the internet, 1 for actual computer-ing

Plus, I actually see my "desktop" from time to time!

I appreciate all the helpful responses. I think I'm gonna go for the more expensive monitor (BenQ). I might as well spend a lot to get the best and never look back. I heard the Asus has a lot of tweaking back and forth for when you game and when you just wanna surf. I already do a lot of that and would like to save my time. I'll post a follow up when I get it. Also gonna try out the lightboost hack. And I already have a two monitor setup, but I barely use the 2nd one. Thanks again guys.  :thumb:

I'm definitely going to take advantage of this feature. I promise.

Nah; fohat cut apart his Model F, just so he can see his desktop.  :p Judging from his age, I'd say fohat has a dark wooden desk with a glass top and he didn't get it from crate and barrel  :p.

With lightboost, it pretty much cuts brightness levels in HALF, at the 10% maximum boost setting..

but it's WORTH IT.. just darken you room a bit.

I'M EXCITEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But I haven't bought it yet so yea not nearly enough.

Regarding the brightness, I'm using half on my current monitor right now anyway and the BenQ has a higher NIT I'm sure. So that wouldn't bother me one bit, especially if it can save me from dreaded motion blur.

I have dark wooden desk (solid wood all the way through) that my father bought for his office in the mid-1960s. No glass top, just wood.

Ugh! I was actually going to predict you bought it in the 1950s-60s, but didn't dare stick my neck out so far.

But yeah, if you're that age, chances are you're still in the solid wood era. Folks my age were going plywood and Crate and Barrel, and by the time of your average teen geekhacker, I'm pretty sure nobody has a real wood desk anymore. Hell, when you kids knock on wood, are you actually knocking on a plastic-vinyl substitute?

Lightboost alone is definitely worth the consideration.

I'm hoping to go back to a two monitor setup. I've some sort of 24 inch dell one here and I like it for Autocad but all the copy pasting and cross referencing of emails and word documents and excel spreadsheets that I do during the day was a lot less fiddly on two screens. I've found as time goes on I've gotten tired of looking at a TV sized monitor from so up close.

My "desk" (which I share with my father) is a mahogany dining table, so I can knock on wood.

I just got myself one of these & I could not be happier

http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-23EA63V-23-inch-1920-Monitor/dp/B00BJHBUW0

Do not be mislead by images online showing an edge-to-edge display. There is a 1cm black border on the sides and top.

However the monitor is stupidly slim & the actual bezel is arou8nd 1.5mm thick. It is the most aesthetically pleasing monitor I have ever seen (at this size) I could not recommend it enough :)

Has anyone here tried a monitor with 21:9 aspect ratio? It is pretty good(my gamer friend has one).
