Title: Popular movies you just hate
Post by: noisyturtle on Sun, 19 January 2014, 21:37:41
So everyone has some films that everyone they know raves about, but for whatever reason you can't stand. Go ahead and share them here so we can all be one with our inner curmudgeon.

Recently I saw Frozen and just absolutely hated it. Sitting through the entire thing was like torture. It reminded me of Brave for some reason, which I also abhorred.

Another is Big Trouble in Little China. I used to adore this flick as a kid, and rented at least once a month from Blockbuster but when I went back and watched it as an adult it was so corny, cliche, and chock full of plot-holes it totally ruined all the nostalgia it once held.

Not hate but I thought inception was way over hyped.

Shutter Island was a better movie imo.

Scarface.  I don't get the intrigue.  Granted it has been a while since I have seen it, maybe its time for a second watch.  It's been at least 10 years since I last watched it.

Feel the same way about The Avengers. Not a bad movie, but I can't help but think that if another director besides Joss Whedon did it, would've been faithful to the comics and made a better film.

Nope, it doesn't get better during the second watch.

The last part when Tony goes all Rambo is truly the only reason to watch that movie. Everything else is just boring as hell.

I felt the exact same. Here they came out around the same time, and while Inception got all the attention, I enjoyed Shutter Island a lot more. Thought he soundtrack for Inception was great.

I do not really hate any movie, except for those movies like Saw etc. But there are movies that just do not appeal to me at all. Pulp Fiction is one example. I am not saying it is bad or whatever, just that the movie does nothing for me. I feel that way about most of Tarantino's movies. They are supposed to be genius but somehow that is completely lost on me.

I think most people watch that movie for the "rags to riches" concept.. (via) illegal means..

I couldn't pay attention through either films....

Inception, the female lead, wtf right? Ruined the whole movie......

Shutter Island.. I was just like.. omfg... this island is like a damn resort, wtf are you complaining about... jesus...  freedom on the one hand... RESORT on the other hand...   Leo you stuck up mother-f...

Oh just about everything that comes out of Hollywood, really. The last one was probably the sci-fi movie with Matt Damon, Elysium. What a drag! I'm not quite sure why I insist on still watching these movies hoping to find something I like. I rarely do.

I liked the Avengers, but not as much as Firefly.

At some point, maybe 6-8 years ago when my son was 6-8 years old, we wen to see "Transformers" and I had an epiphany about the need for movies that were mere action spectacles of mayhem and destruction without regard to wasted effort such as character development.

As an aficionado of art films and psychological thrillers, I realized my tastes had kept me away from pretty much anything that a grade-school-aged boy would consider "awesome" ....

Who cares about "Blade Runner" when there weren't even any massive weapons, buildings blown up, or space ships?

Seriously, that movie had to be that long?  I felt like everything was dragged out.  Then the director's special extended version, whatever it was labelled, added another hour?  For what?  A lot of fluff and filler, the entire movie lags.

I actually really liked Frozen, and like most Disney films in general.

Some popular movies I've seen that I just really could not enjoy are Inception (watched it on the plane, and was not impressed whatsoever), and The Jungle Book. The Jungle Book is one of the only Disney animated films I just could not stand.

Drive, I don't know why maybe too slow for me..

Completely agree on Drive.  It was boring as hell to me.  A good looking movie, but my idea of a good movie is not 5-10 minute spans of Jake Gyllenhaal staring off into space doing nothing but driving slowly around a city, pregnant pauses in speaking that make him seem like he's mentally challenged, or constant pointless interactions and scenes that do nothing for the story except go "hey, this is an artsy and beautiful movie and isn't Jake sexy?".  It's one of the only movies I truly started to fall asleep in.  And I like art house, indie, and foreign films.

Then there's Run Lola Run and Gravity.  I hated Run Lola Run because it ended with a Disney perfect ending after going through two awesome arcs that ended in tragedy.   Gravity I hated because the story and character development were forced and rather trite.  There was nothing compelling that made me feel for the characters.  It was another one of those films that looked good and nothing else.  The best summary I saw of the film said that it was all effect and little affect, something that I wholeheartedly agree with.

Anything by Tarantino.

I was enjoying Kill Bill until it just went over the top and I lost all interest. He (and the actors) had actually created a character I could possible care about / feel something for (a first for a Tarantino movie for me). And then he blew it by making her just a little too powerful. The "suspension of disbelief" was gone and I just didn't care any more. Spent the rest of the movie wishing I could be doing something more worthwhile with my time. This has happened with every Tarantino film I have watched.

It's not just about the genre, either. I enjoyed Machete.

I quite enjoyed "In Bruges", too. Hated Hunger Games.

To be fair, I'm practically glow in the dark white.  You can ask mkawa or badwrench to verify that.  I just went to a school with too many people in the Greek system.  After a while, they all morph together into a pretty generic "bro" look.

Today's cinema with all it sequels, prequels, reboots and adaptations is depressing...
The amount of unoriginal content is insane, same as the broad audience (let's try making it appeal to everyone) concept.

300 and Anchorman. I really like Greek mythology/history, 300 was macho trash. Anchorman, pretty much everyone I knew quoted it all the time for about a year and insisted that I "needed to see it", when I did, all the "funny" bits were dead to me.

Gravity, nice effects and I think they got the tension aspect right but that movie is impossible to watch as a physicist, there was just too much that was wrong with it.

I'm okay with you disliking them, I'm just curious.

I just don't get it with the adoration of him. The stories feel cheesy, and the staggering violence, it seems pointless.

I have liked a couple of his movies moderately well, but generally they just seem narcissistic and gratuitous.

The older I get, the more I am turned off by violence. As incidental background, it is often required, but I hate having it glorified.

Especially when it is blood and guts up close and personal.

One of the main reasons I respect him so highly is because of Reservoir Dogs.  The characters and dialogue in that story are just spectacular.  Dialogue in particular is something I love about his movies.  And I like a lot of his directing techniques, and his use of long cuts - usually in dialogue-heavy moments.

I don't watch his movies for the violence, but I also don't mind it.  Though I will say that if you only see Kill Bill you'll have a skewed view of what a "Tarantino" film consists of.  (not saying that's the case for you, that's a more general statement)

Well here are the ones I have watched in their entirety:

From Dusk till Dawn
Pulp Fiction
Jackie Brown
Kill Bill
Inglourious Basterds

The older movies were tolerable. Perhaps I should try Reservoir Dogs.

Moonrise Kingdom was pretty good. Still kind of undecided about Broken Flowers and The Life Aquatic.

The Iron Man series was good, but then all movies with Robert Downey Jr. are, aren't they?

I'm also a fan of the Daniel Craig James Bonds.

broken flowers is by jim jarmusch, not wes anderson.

the problem with tarantino is that he's too busy paying tribute to obscure genres and formulating hip soundtracks. funny that wes anderson suffers the same. both of their first films were amazing (reservoir dogs/bottle rocket) and both followed up with second and third films that just nailed their style (t:pulp fiction/jackie brown, a:rushmore/royal tenenbaums) and were great to watch. been straight downhill since; like they're just spinning in directorial circles.

drive was fantastic if you're an early john carpenter (assualt on precinct 13) fan. i mean right down to the soundtrack, straight homage. i enjoyed it for what it was.

run lola run is also fantastic. it was part of a series by tykwer in which he explored fate and how it can change or remain a constant. run lola run explored the previous but the princess and her warrior explored the latter. i mean, i wasn't a fan of the animated sequences of rlr but i really enjoyed the plot. watching it sixteen years later could make it seem dated.

i will never, ever understand kevin smith. i have seen nothing worth noting. i saw clerks when it toured the college circuit before release and loved it. watched it a while back and was apalled. the editing pauses in between dialogue and the sheer inability of the actors to not sound like they were reading off cue cards was cringe worthy. yikes.
